You could use drinking straws if you were very worried.

Agreed - that IS a good idea! Would give the pockets a shape like a pen also. I am still figuring out how to multi-quote so thank you to all who provided their ideas/experience.

I made a fun trip to the hardware store for Lexol cleaner/conditioner just in case - though I think I will start with Dawn dishwashing detergent and warm water as recommended. Hope to have some pictures for you in a few days!

Hi Ladies.....was just thinking of what fun we would all have if we bought this lot!!! ;):yahoo:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Bags-Wholes...955?pt=US_CSA_WH_Handbags&hash=item51a8e8ad33

I'm surprised it gotten so many bids. It is already at $13 per bag and there is a day left. I don't think it is a very good deal if someone is buying these for resale, and the listing states they aren't in good enough condition for resale. I wonder what the bidders are intending to use them for.

I know what you mean - they clearly say that they are in poor condition, some with holes and tears but, I didn't even go that far in thinking about it....I was just thinking of ALL the washing and conditioning we could be doing!! !:D

Not to mention the shipping. Add that to your acquisition costs and there isn't sufficient profit after a rehab

I recently bought a used Sophia on eBay, and the lining could use some cleaning (looks a little dirty). What would be the best thing to use on the lining-- dish soap? I am clueless!

If the lining is really dirty, you can pull it out of the bag and use dish soap and water. You just have to be careful to wash all the soap out of it. If it isn't very dirty, I use a mild spray cleaner that doesn't require rinsing.

She isn't gonna make it :(

I did a rehab yesterday on a 98 Equestrian bucket bag....she was dunked, conditioned....conditioned some more...and EHHHH, she smells like smoke. Is it a lost cause? At this point, i'm sure she's clean, its just the cleaning seems to have raised the smoke smell out. Yuck! I'm a former smoker, so i can not stand the smell of old smoke.

so sad.... : ( any suggestions...or is it a lost cause?

Smoke smell is very hard to eliminate, but it does get stronger when the leather is wet and it fades after it dries.

There are lots of suggestions for getting rid of smoke smell, airing it outside, baking soda, dryer sheets, cycling it through the washing machine, etc.

I've had the best luck with putting bags of charcoal (aquarium filters) inside and outside of the bag and then sealing it all up inside a tight plastic bag and letting it sit around for awhile.

You can get rid of smoke smell but it may take time, don't give up yet (and it really does smell worse when the bag is wet.)

thank you. i'm feeling so wishy washy about it now (no pun intended)...i might try running her through a wash cycle in the machine and leaving her in the basement...(out of sight, out of mind) and perhaps i will obsess less about the smell and it will have time to fad....i have her in my room and every time i walk by i sniff her and EHHHCK, its still there -.-

Often when a rehab is not going as well as I hoped I put the bag away to give us both a break and then I may come back to it later. I was locked in a off and on struggle with a stinky, smoky navy willis and I gave up several times! I finally got the smell out, and it is a great bag. See the thread below:

It just takes time. I have had bags with a stubborn smoke smell but after a few months of effort it eventually disappeared. I used a combination of baths, airing outside, alcohol, and closing up in a plastic bag with carpet fresh, baking soda, charcoal or bath salts.

thats so cool! :)

i put mine in the washing machine (gentle cycle) - figuring she isn't usable (imo) with the smell...so what the heck?! she is out now and drying...the smell is pretty faint at this point....i'm guessing it will fade with time...and new smells will take over. lol.

i don't think she can handle too much more-heavy cleanings.. i noticed some of the double stitching is now single stitching : ( and the strap is def getting worn. i want to try and keep her for sentimental reasons, my mom got her for me while thrift store shopping and i appreciate that. she isn't a purse person. so either way, i imagine i will keep her...i would just like to be able to use her!! :)

thanks again ladies!!

The TPF phone app is being updated for the next few days so I can't easily add pictures into this post - and they come out gigantic from my phone anyway. I had fun (and wrinkled hands) for the last hour doing some cleanup of a Legacy Zip in black that I had authenticated here (thank goodness for all of you experienced TPFers!). I got it bundled with a Stewardess that just needed some touch-ups of the brass. Both these bags are so rich and dark in color that I questioned whether they might have been re-dyed. I have yet to condition the Stewardess, so there may be some color lifting then.

I had three moments of panic with the Legacy Zip, which also had verdigris along two zippers and the strap grommets (and I noticed the grommet backs are different in the two bags - Legacy Zip has star-shaped grommet backs and Stewardess has cylinders). They were:
1. Lifting of dye from strap when I tried gently using Lexol leather cleaner. It has no smell and is a clear soapy substance I used on a damp washcloth. I opted for Dawn for the body of the bag, and had no significant dye loss.
2. However, I got a big blue ink mark in my sink! Then I remembered the base of the bag did appear to have a blue ink stain inside - maybe fountain pen or rollerball since it melted pretty easily (but got a little absorbed by my sink).
3. As I was shaking out the water drops, I noticed several leather bits on my fingers, and was worried I was somehow scuffing the exterior of the bag by handling it. I dusted those off. I think some suede bits from the inside were clinging to those corners in particular, but I am not sure.

Bag and strap are drying now. I used Cape Cod cleaning cloths on the verdigris and brass components before washing. I find these cloths very easy to handle and long-lasting, though I probably will sacrifice the one that got the verdigris on it. More to follow soon, maybe with pictures!

*Latest update after about 30 minutes of draining prior to stuffing with paper towels - large blue-black dye/ink marks along the rag I used to line the sink where the bag was draining. Also, front of bag continues to feel "scuffed" even while color and texture of front appear to maintain integrity. The rags I am using to test the cleanliness of the bag are coming out with dark spots! A light sheen of dye is coming off from all the unsealed edges of the bag - wherever the leather is raw along the piping seams. I remember from Momtok's early posts that some dye loss during drying is OK. It remains to be seen whether the dye stays colorfast during further drying, conditioning, and actual use of bag. I have to stay patient.
