I have my latest purchases being shipped. They're the sateen bags trimmed in leather from the Hamptons line. One is the tote and one is the hobo bag. Is it safe to just hand wash them? There's only some leather on the handles of the tote and along the edge of the bag, so I assume it'd be okay?

I've dunked some vintage bags and they've turned out fine, but these are actually "new" to me in that I've only got experience with leather lol. Oh and how do I get the fabric nice and white, this tote is definitely used and the handles reflect that.

I have a good news bad news situation and was wondering if anyone can help. So the good news is that I found this amazing red city bag for $7.50!!!! I'm so excited because I don't have any red bags and this one is such a great size for me. The bad news is that someone seems to have attacked it with ink. :( What's with old Coach bags and ink by the way???? Given the cheap price I bought it anyway and plan to do my best rehabbing it. Obviously, the ink won't come out all the way so I am planning to touch it up with red paint.

I was wondering if anyone has touched up this type of bag before. I have experience painting the corners of a black bag and a brown bag. In both cases, the end results were amazing. Red seems a little more difficult so I thought I'd come to the experts!

What kind of paint did you use? Is acrylic glossy the correct paint? If by some miracle anyone happens to know a specific brand or color that would be a good starting point, I would be grateful.

Thanks!

I have used acrylic craft paint, but for something that bad, I would suggest you use Leather Refinish Color Restorer by Wood-n-Stuff. http://wood-n-stuff.com/leatheraid.html

As long as it doesn't need reshaping, I don't know if I would dunk a bag like that. The ink would spread if it got wet.

Ladies!! Lookey Lookey what I have found - an original Bonnie Cashin Body Bag in red! :yahoo:

Now, here's where you come in, I saw somewhere, I believe between Katev and DemRam that the older Cashin's need additional love when rehabbing? Is that true, something about dry and cracked leather? As you can see, there is no damage, unlike my first body bag, which was a re-make. I want to dunk for smell and just to give it some love, suggestions!

I hope my images upload and BTW, I visited the UCLA Archives and this lovely bag was drawn in Red with Bonnie's notes on it.

I agree that you would need to dye the entire bag rather than trying to touch up the spots, it's just too heavily inked. I don't know who well the dye will cover. I am sure that you would like to keep that beautiful red color but it may be necessary to go to a dark color. But for that price it is certainly worth trying to save this beautiful bag!

I once tried to wash a white nylon Hampton's hobo with suede leather trim and it was not as sucessful as I had wished. The bag came clean but it had discolored yellow areas. I thought it might have some from the adhesive used on the leather. I don't know if that would happen to you to, but I was a bit disappointed, see the link below and sorry I don't have better news!

Hi ladies - How about a black nylon bag? I have several black bags now from the Mercer line...anyone know if it is safe to dunk them? If not, do I jsut wipe with a damp cloth and use Apple or Leather CPR on the leather trim? (dunking just seems to really clean them, to me anyway)....

I also have some mercer bags that need rehab. I feel comfortable about dunking the black bags but I also have a light blue one trimmed with black leather and I am worried about washing that one.

I would also be interested to hear advice about rehabbing mercer bags.

I used wood n stuff on my red city bag and it was such a good match I didn't even do the entire bag, just the flap and back panel. There are pix in this thread, I experimented on the bag a lot. I tried red acrylic paint. The match was good but it stiffened the leather. I like it much better after wood n stuff

Whateve's advice is good, I probably would try washing it if it was me just to get as much ink out as possible. You won't get it all out so you'll have to paint over it anyway, so I would probably fill up the sink first, then before I dunked it I would soak a cotton ball and work on the inside and see what I could get off. It probably will soak through to the outside but hopefully overall you'll end up with less ink to cover up.

I had really good luck with one bag doing that and was successful in getting all the ink out by dabbing the inside. It seemed to push it through the leather and then I just kept using fresh cotton balls and running water over it to rinse the alcohol and ink off. It took a long time, it was a lot of work, and I kept it wet the entire time. I also have no idea what kind of ink was on it, so I don't want to get your hopes up. I've also worked with ink that wouldn't budge. But you are painting it either way so I'd probably try to at least reduce the amount of ink you're dealing with.

It's a great find matter which route you take, I just thought I'd throw in my 2 cents. Good luck!

Just gave a bath to my first rehab! I had to take a deep breathe and then just plunge it in the sink, no turning back. I was amazed at how well it took the water. Now it's draining in the sink waiting to be stuffed with towels. Any advice on what to do with the long strap? Should I just leave it out or try to wrap it in a towel?

Hi all! Well, I've been dunking a lot of bags this past month or so (got 5 drying as we speak) but havent posted many "after" pictures so I thought I would tonight. I picked up this cute daypack at Savers Thrift store for 11 dollars - just washed with Dawn, warm water, conditioned with Leather Cpr after 24 hours and then a coat of Leather Restorer and Conditioner...I was lazy and polished brass with Brasso while on the bag so I didn't do as great a job as when I take the hardware off, but it's fine. The Bonnie's Legacy tote (or is it the Bonnie Cashin tote -have read that it's called both?) needed nothing except a little Apple Condtioner - it arrived from ebay simply gorgeous. I adorned this little lady with a key chain I made.

I'm pretty much a newbie still but I just leave the straps out to dry or I detach them and lay them flat if they are detachable. Have fun! It is very satisfying!:smile1:
