I wanted to share my rehab and "upgrade" of a very abused Basic Bag I bought off ebay.
Here she is before:

I did the normal rehab routine and that did a lot, however, she was missing a leather strip on her wristlet piece:

After seeing a tutorial on how to make your own leather tassels, I got creative with some of the Tandy leather fringe I had ordered:

I braided a center section and added two side strips. Since this attached to the plastic piece, I should be able to remove it later. I will probably replace it with dark brown in the future for a more subtle contrast.

I made her matching tassel to coordinate:

And here she is now:

I still want to work with her leather a bit, but I am happy with her and have carried her a few times now. A big thank you to thrift-aholic for the heads up on the tutorial!

Wow! I love that tassel! I had one that had some of the metal exposed. I just painted over it. I never thought about wrapping it. What a great idea!

Love the tassel and the coverup, its super cute and the color goes well.... Well done!

Quite a challenge! I can hardly wait to see what you do with it!

Me too!!!
I have a pretty good product for scratches. Not sure how it will perform at the bottom of the bag, scratches look pretty deep, but last time I rehabbed a heavily scratched bag (the sidepack) after a good bath and a couple coats of it, it was already much better!
I use Justin's conditioner, its meant for horse saddles and cowboy boots.
Ill post a photo when I get my rehab kit out again :)

aw, i want that tassle! hihi, makes me smile today. thanks too, Porter4.

The Chester is GREAT! A much better size and still so cute!

So now I can't get that parchment Willis-lol! I wish the strap was a wee bit longer, I like LONG crossbody straps, but otherwise I'm pretty happy.

Her twin lives with me...rehabbed mine last spring...beautiful and roomy bag! Still have trouble referring to Chester as a "she" LOL.

And of course, I love, love, love the purple nail polish!

Thanks! Did you ever work on that lilac duffle? That was you, correct?

Thank you. She is perfect. I like how you have dolled her up with tassels! I hope you find another bag to experiment on!

I think I can make the tassels look a little nicer, I just sorta stuck them on there and snapped a picture, but I am pretty happy with the bag. Whoever had her all these years didn't use her and stored her carefully.

That came out great! I have found instructions for making tassels but they all involve cutting the leather and I don't think I have the coordination to cut that straight! Where did you find your tutorial?

Here is the tutorial I used: http://honestlywtf.com/diy/diy-tassel-bag-charm/

I have also looked at this one though: http://betsyrosspatterns.blogspot.com/2008/04/leather-tassel-tutorial-and-small-rant.html

I bought leather fringe strip so the only cutting was to make the tab to thread the ball chain through. I just bought some in hot pink off ebay tonight and plan on getting more creative with my tassels in the future :smile1:

Wow, that looks easy! Makes me feel stupid for spending so much on Coach tassels.

It is easy, but it is a very different look than Coach tassels. Coach edges every raw edge on their tassels, which I didn't do. Their tassels are much more finished looking, and you get the tiny Coach charm ;) At some point I want to find the little trigger clasp, as I like being able to clip the Coach tassels almost anywhere.

If you find the trigger clasp, let me know. I've been searching for them forever so I can clip my keychains easily to my bags. I hate using the hangtag chain.
