I wanted to share my rehab and "upgrade" of a very abused Basic Bag I bought off ebay.
Here she is before:

I did the normal rehab routine and that did a lot, however, she was missing a leather strip on her wristlet piece:

After seeing a tutorial on how to make your own leather tassels, I got creative with some of the Tandy leather fringe I had ordered:

I braided a center section and added two side strips. Since this attached to the plastic piece, I should be able to remove it later. I will probably replace it with dark brown in the future for a more subtle contrast.
I made her matching tassel to coordinate:

And here she is now:

I still want to work with her leather a bit, but I am happy with her and have carried her a few times now. A big thank you to thrift-aholic for the heads up on the tutorial!
Not sure if you guys will be able to see it, auction has ended, but have a looksee at my next rehab.... Cant wait to get my hands on that!

Wait, you apply a small section at a time and buff off, then let sit for 24 hrs. Then another coat of Obenauf's.
Uh oh. What if I did a whole side at once? Was that a terrible idea?
It is easy, but it is a very different look than Coach tassels. Coach edges every raw edge on their tassels, which I didn't do. Their tassels are much more finished looking, and you get the tiny Coach charmAt some point I want to find the little trigger clasp, as I like being able to clip the Coach tassels almost anywhere.
I actually prefer the softness of the unfinished edges, I think the Coach tassels are too stiff. Actually some of the old glove tanned leather broken in would be perfect. That's one reason I had looked into making my own.
So now I can't get that parchment Willis-lol! I wish the strap was a wee bit longer, I like LONG crossbody straps, but otherwise I'm pretty happy.
Thanks! Did you ever work on that lilac duffle? That was you, correct?
I think I can make the tassels look a little nicer, I just sorta stuck them on there and snapped a picture, but I am pretty happy with the bag. Whoever had her all these years didn't use her and stored her carefully.
Thanks!
Here is the tutorial I used: http://honestlywtf.com/diy/diy-tassel-bag-charm/
I have also looked at this one though: http://betsyrosspatterns.blogspot.com/2008/04/leather-tassel-tutorial-and-small-rant.html
I bought leather fringe strip so the only cutting was to make the tab to thread the ball chain through. I just bought some in hot pink off ebay tonight and plan on getting more creative with my tassels in the future![]()
I love this! I didn't realize they had colors besides very basic black and brown, etc. I'll have to check it out again!! I want to make a black one!
Some days it's just good to be a "thrifty hoarder." Over the years I have picked up leather belts - the wider, sash-type, buttery leather kind - in black, red, silver and even purple! All from Goodwill or SA for less than $2 each.
Thanks so much for the links - I shall now try my fringe-cutting, tassle-building skills and report back.
Excited to see! I think you can very creative with this beyond the basic tassel. Somehow I want to merge a charm fob with the leather....we will see if it actually looks as good IRL as in my mind![]()
YAY! YIPPEE! YAHOO! Thanks to you - and Betsy Ross - I now know how to make tassels. And yes, I see great possibilities, too.
A few tips from today's learning curve:
I used Loctite Vinyl, Fabric & Plastic (leather too) Flexible Adhesive. It was easy to work with, with one exception. The leather I used has a silver finish. Rather, HAD a silver finish where the glue came in contact. Hubby said I should have expected this. Duh! No harm really, as all of the glue is on the inside.
Since I started with an old sash-type belt, I cut my own fringe. Advice to anyone cutting fringe: Make sure your blade is SHARP, and work slowly, making several shallow cuts, rather than trying to cut all the way through on a single draw. Also, if you're working with an Xacto, lay the blade down a bit and it draws easier. Most of all - BE CAREFUL.
Also, because I was working from a belt, I had a really nice, stitched edge to use for the top of the tassel and the hanger.
All in all, the measuring for the fringe was the hardest part. I made my fringe a little fatter than Betsy (3/16"). Though I was working on a table-size cutting mat, the leather did slip a bit, while marking for the fringe.
Found the clip and keyring combo (2 sets in a pack) at Jo-Ann Fabrics in the bead department for about 2 bucks and change. Only in silver, though. But since I was experimenting with silver leather...it works for me. And I do have a couple of bags with nickel hardware.
This was fun - I've decorated my bag for Christmas - and the price was right! Thanks for helping me learn yet another very useful (eyes rolling) skill!
