A quick rehab update. A few months ago, I got my hands on a Plaza bag that REEKED of cigarettes. Like, I couldn't have it in the same room with me, because it smelled so strongly of cigarettes, and I don't mind subtle cigarette smell, (it reminds me of my grandma). But this was out of control, and I knew that I would never carry her, nor could I in good conscience sell her to anyone but a chain smoker! I was really wanting to save her, because she was in such good shape and came with her hang tag, original little drawstring bag of paperwork AND registration card!

I tried stuffing her with newspaper. No help.
I tried sitting her in sunshine. No help.
I gave her *5* baths. She'd smell a little better briefly, then "The Creeping Stink" would return. It was like it just oozed out of her.

On the final bath, I dumped in a bunch of Mr. Clean, because I was at the "nothing to lose" point. It helped only a smidge, and dried her out terribly. :/

Finally after weeks of glaring at her, my husband says "Did you try dryer sheets? Put some of those in the pockets, and the smell will go away". I thought he was kind of nuts, and that at best I'd get a bag that smelled like cigarettes and Downy.

To my surprise, the dryer sheets helped A LOT more than anything else I've tried. Between weeks stuffed with dryer sheets and many applications of Leather Therapy, she became usable. She still has a faint smell, but she's at a point where I'd carry her.

The pics are pre-polishing of the brass, but I mostly wanted to show the color difference between the dry leather and the conditioned leather. She was SO dry that by the time I wiped the Leather Therapy across the bag, the beginning would already be dry to the touch! This is what the inside pockets looked like, halfway through conditioning her.

Gorgeous bag.

I'm sorry none of us have had any ideas for your bag. I was thinking about it today and the only thing I could come up with is maybe use some sort of leather conditioner. Since oily substances remove make up from our skin it might work on leather. The next option would be the make-up remover that you would use to remove the lip stain from your lips. Which may take off more color from the bag, I have no idea.

You could try washing the bag but we don't know if that will get the stain off, and since none of us have washed the new legacy bags we don't know what that would do to it either.

I would probably go in steps, but be prepared to do it all at once...try the conditioner, if that doesn't work, try the make up remover, and if that doesn't work, go right to washing it.

Ultimately you need to decide if the bag is carryable as is. If it's going to hang in the closet or into the trash it might be worth taking some risks, or dying the bag a different color-I'd probably go to a pro for that on this bag.

And try not to be too hard on your daughter or bring it up too often. Believe it or not now, you'll be laughing about it some day...really, you will.

Thanks. I am going to take it to the leather shop in the town next to mine and see what they think. If they can't clean it I might have them dye it. I'll let you know what they say in case anyone else runs into this problem

Speaking of British Tan and Black Rocks, y'all may have seen this bag in the ID thread. I didn't even wait for positive identification before I dumped this poor Musette in the kitchen sink:

.

Just ran across these old postings as I am looking up more info on musettes. I am holding my breath HOPING that the bag I just won last night is the real deal, and is ok since the photos are kinda "blah". If it's all good, I think a wash and polish is going to make her FANTASTIC! I'm so excited since I've been looking for an affordable musette for a good while now, and blew a shot at one months ago! Here's my bag's link...what do ya think?

It doesnt appear to have major marks or scratches, I bet it WILL look gorgeous once you get the rehab magic going! Im already liking it.

Cant wait to see pictures!

It looks great Jessi! I am not an expert but it does look authentic and it looks to have the slightly darker contrasting piping which I love. I will keep my fingers crossed for you that it gets the thumbs up from Hyancinth! Awesome price too:smile1:

The details and measurements look exactly like mine, other than mine has the stamped on number, not the glued in. It's a very cool bag, and though the leather is nice and thick I don't find it to be especially heavy because there's not a lot of hardware.

Can't wait to see it!

I hope it is a different color. You don't want to end up like me, with 4 of them, all the same color! :D

Oh no! The first one I bought is britishtan, and the second one I am currently bidding on is a beautiful red. Any suggestions on what leather cleaner and moisturizer I should use? Was just thinking of buying the coach ones.

If you read through the thread, some people don't like the Coach moisturizer because it contains silicone which isn't good for leather. Personally, I don't find the leather cleaners to be that helpful. They never seem to remove any stains. It doesn't matter much because I usually dunk all leather bags anyway.

For moisturizing, there are several on the market. The one you use will depend on how much help your bag needs. I like Leather CPR as a basic all around moisturizer. It is thicker than most and works well on the older bags. To hide the scratches, Blackrock is a favorite. For bags that need even more, some of us use emu oil, neatsfoot oil, or mink oil.
