Be careful with CitraSolv. I would have to check the ingredients and it might be related to a lab solvent called CitriSolve which is a nontoxic version of a strong chemical called xylene. These products also smell like Goo Gone which has that same citrus scent.

That sounds about right. It needs to be heavily diluted for use, but wow. They use citrus oil as a paint stripper so...

The good news is that the bag survived the bath just fine. I bathed her in Woolite for 30 minutes, then rinsed in dilute vinegar before stuffing with towels to dry. No color bleeding at all! The bad news is the smell is still there. It is less strong, but definitely there. I do not want to dunk her again because although the leather survived ok, the fabric body seems just a touch less stiff to me. So, I guess I will be trying other options (airing it out, stuffing with newspaper, coffee grounds, etc.).

It took a long time to get mine aired out to the "just barely noticeable" stage. Like, months and several runs through the wash. I'm not sure the vinegar really did anything but I don't think it hurt either. My sink was really shiny afterwards though. :)

You can always put the vinegar in a downy ball and add some essential oils. This will make it easier in the washing machine (you won't have to wait until the rinse cycle) and the oils will take the smell of the vinegar away.

Here are the ingredients: Valencia Orange: Limonene (the clear liquid from the peel of the orange, food grade), C10-16 Pareth-1 (plant derived surfactant), Citrus Aurantium Dulcis (Orange) Peel Oil.
Are you referring to C10-16 Pareth-1, the name does sound kind of scary!
I only plan on using it when all other methods have failed.

Great job! We're bag cousins. :ghi5: I don't use mine as an everyday bag either, but it's really cute to use once in a while when running errands - and it's adorable in white (mine's a camel/saddle color)!

And, fair warning, once you've been bit by the rehab bug, there's no turning back!! :p

And that's the truth!
After the first one there's no going back.

I think I am ready to declare this bag done! I present the after pics of my 1977 Navy Watermelon Tote...

I dunked her in Woolite, did an application of Leather Therapy Restorer while she dried, a few applications of Leather CPR and two applications of Black Rocks.

The hardware holding the straps is plated so didn't polish up bright and shiny. I'm okay with that for now, but will keep an eye out for possible replacement hardware eventually.

The leather is nice and thick - some areas needed more conditioning than others - she IS 35 yrs old after all. The color has morphed a bit to a gorgeous dark teal/navy hybrid. The inside is now super soft and plush - I keep stroking it! :P

One last pic...here she is loaded up with my stuff. I'm going to carry her to work tomorrow. :)

What you can't see that's in the pocket is the original paperwork in its little drawstring bag (pics posted earlier). I feel like I've helped preserve a little piece of Coach history...this old gal still has quite a bit of life left in her!
