Thank you everyone for your replies! I didn't buy expensive paint (just the $1 stuff..was the closest color match) so I'm hoping it's okay. I know from experience that getting acrylic paint on clothes is pretty permanent so I hope that's the case with leather.

You can still see the worst of the nasty scuff but I think overall it turned out well! It definitely isn't that noticeable.

I probably won't carry this bag everyday. It's too small for me so it's more of a once in awhile bag. Even though I don't carry much and what I DO carry fits in the bag, I like having the freedom to throw random crap in there..LOL

I'm looking for my next project!

I'm curious to see how this turns out. I have a suede bag that was drenched in perfume and I still haven't gotten the perfume out. She has taken many spins through the washing machine and spent many days hanging outdoors. It is much, much, better, however, and fortunately the smell that remains is a bearable scent, not stale. It's very much a winter style (trimmed in shearling) so I've got some time to keep airing it.

I found vinegar recommended in several places and I'm not sure I'd recommend this for every bag, but I soaked her in not very diluted venegar. I think it did help with the perfume scent but even though she took another spin through the washer after the vinegar soak I can still smell a bit of vinegar. At this point I'm just not going to worry about it. Since I reminded myself while posting this I put her outside for the afternoon, but I don't think anyone around me is going to notice this when I carry her.

The good news is that the bag survived the bath just fine. I bathed her in Woolite for 30 minutes, then rinsed in dilute vinegar before stuffing with towels to dry. No color bleeding at all! The bad news is the smell is still there. It is less strong, but definitely there. I do not want to dunk her again because although the leather survived ok, the fabric body seems just a touch less stiff to me. So, I guess I will be trying other options (airing it out, stuffing with newspaper, coffee grounds, etc.).

Wow, she looks great, white bags are so challenging to rehab! Nice work!

Thank you for all your help! (Well everyone!)

I really want to find one for my boyfriend's mom to fix up. Like I said in a previous post, she had a bag from Wilson's leather that she used for YEARS and it finally took a crap (all the zippers broke etc.). I think I can find a similar style in Coach to fix up. She likes "hobo" bags that zip shut and only have 1 strap. Not necessarily a crossbody, she likes bags with shorter straps. Any ideas? I'm really not good with older Coach styles.

Sounds like the Legacy Zip 9966 to me! I have the strap set on the longest setting in the pics below, but it can be made much shorter.

I have been playing around with a product called CitraSolv. It is STRONG stuff. I was able to get some ink off the nubuc purse I have been working on with it. It does seem to alter the leather slightly and should be used cautiously, much like rubbing alcohol. You might have to repaint the area, but you could use the matching lighter colors possibly.
Here is a link to it: http://citrasolv.com/
I was able to buy it in my grocery store, in with the natural cleaning products.
HTH

Be careful with CitraSolv. I would have to check the ingredients and it might be related to a lab solvent called CitriSolve which is a nontoxic version of a strong chemical called xylene. These products also smell like Goo Gone which has that same citrus scent.

Great job! We're bag cousins. :ghi5: I don't use mine as an everyday bag either, but it's really cute to use once in a while when running errands - and it's adorable in white (mine's a camel/saddle color)!

And, fair warning, once you've been bit by the rehab bug, there's no turning back!! :p

Another option could be an Ergo hobo. I'm currently rehabbing an Ergo Pocket Zip - very roomy and the strap length is super comfy! Here's a pic...
