I have a question...

Since I did use paint in the conditioner when I fixed my bag, will it rub off? I expect some rubbing over time but I'm just worried about rubbing against clothes and leaving a mark.

I did another coat just now and the scuffs are BARELY noticeable. I did have to go over the entire bag with the conditioner because I could see the spots I missed that were dingy. Tomorrow if it's sunny I'll take it outside and fix what I missed!

I think after some time, the paint becomes permanent. It might wear off eventually but it isn't going to rub onto your clothes (I think.)

SO SAD! Coach contacted me today and said the following: "Please be advised that Coach will offer 3 replacement tags per Calendar year. Our records indicate (3) have been mailed out to you already. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you." Bummed out. Might have to use an alias LOL!

I need some rehab advice. I am working on a Legacy Straw Tote that I got at the Savers for $22.50. The style number is 113 and the bag was made in China in 2005.

The bag was very misshapen and it was dirty and dingy, the AT pics are at the link below and it looks a lot cleaner in the pics than it actually was IRL.

It washed up beautifully and I was able to restore the shape, but I am having problems repairing damage to the gold metallic leather. There were spots of some kind of nasty, dried orange crud on the bag. Including a bad spot on the front flap pocket and another one on the strap.

I think someone used the bag at a picnic and splashed ketsup on it and didn't clean it off. I was able to get it off but now I am trying to deal with the damage left behind.

Here are some pics. The big spot on the front flap produced an orange stain on the thin strip of ivory leather trim next to the metallic leather and I was able to touch that up with acrylic paints, but I have not been successful camouflaging the damage to the adjacent metallic leather.

I have tried several different shades of metallic paints, and I have tried mixing them with each other and with leather cpr. The problem is that if the shade of gold is dark enough to cover the spot then it is too dark to match the rest of the bag. And I do not want to attempt repainting all the gold leather on the bag!

Anyone have any suggestions? Has anyone ever tried to apply gold-leaf to anything? What is that gold stuff that they use to apply monograms to leather? How about gold ink? I am usually against using ink or shoepolish but I am getting desperate!

Should I try taking it to a cobbler? I had no luck with the cobbler, the boutique, or Coach JAX when I tried to get the metallic leather on my copper zoe repaired so I think that I will probably have to find my own solution. The bag is really stunning and I am very open to all ideas! Help! And thanks!

Sorry to hear that, if you stop in a boutique store with your bag they are often able to help you find a replacement tag.

I just died laughing. Please make sure I have a very stylish funeral.

If I remember my marketing class correctly, that would be called a "value-added feature!"

Have you tried painting the spot white and then going over the top later with the right color? Other than that, they make Leather Refinisher in metallics but I think you might still have trouble matching the color. There is a metallic paint marker made by Elmer's called Painters. It looks like a marker but it is paint, not ink.

Thanks! I tried mixing a white acrylic paint with a metallic paint but that didn't work so well. Maybe if I rub a little white paint into the spot to lighten the area and then overpaint it that would help - good idea!

I thought about the Leather Refinisher Restorer but like you, I figured that it would be too hard to match colors. I will look for the elmers paint marker, great idea, thanks again!

I have never had problems with permanent acrylic paint rubbing off, but I recently did my first white paint job and I haven't carried her much yet. So far everything is good.

I think yall turned me in to a rehab junkie - I am about to DUNK another one ;)

LOL - it is an addiction that hits hard and fast! I just got bit by the bug about 6 weeks ago and I'm a full on junkie now. ;)

Not sure what's the bigger high: 1) the thrill of the hunt through thrift stores and online for vintage bags (how great is it to find a true classic that you know is gonna clean up purty for the cost of a song??), or 2) the satisfaction of the finished product of a freshly clean and beautiful bag with a renewed purpose and lots of years left to give.
