Hmmm...working on polishing the hardware on my Watermelon Tote and it's pretty frustrating. The ball chain on the hang tag polished up bright and beautiful. The clasp of the kiss lock polished up pretty well though there is some wear at the spot where the stress of opening/closing occurs. The weirdness is the metal on the handles - it is really hard to capture with my phone camera, but no matter how much I polish, it's dull, dingy and gray looking:

And...the pull ring on the zipper looks copper (I know it isn't, but it sure looks it - bright like a new penny!) I'm perplexed...is it just that the brass is really old and discolored and will take a LOT more elbow grease (ugh)? Or is there plated metal on parts of the bag and no amount of polishing will make it shiny again?
I know what you mean about the copper look. I just bought a vintage strap on Ebay and parts of it look like copper. The part that gets the most stress is worn down and that part looks silver. A magnetic doesn't stick to it.

On my oldest bag, the buckles are labeled solid brass.

I was at the hardware store looking for clips to attach fobs/charms to my bag and there was a huge display of brass rings and various clips. I was thinking hmm, if i ever have to replace one I am so coming back and having a cobbler do it.

Yeah. On this bag, it's hit and miss...it's just the metal handle rings that are plated. The rest - the kiss lock and zipper and pull - are all brass. I'll give some thought on what I may want to do about those. Perhaps I can find some brass rings that are similar and see if a cobbler can replace them. For now, it's not bothering me that much...she's still gorgeous!

I have been having this issue with some of the hardware on my older bags. What has worked on some of them is this: first apply brasso manually, let sit for 30 seconds and then hand scrub/polish (this seems to get the older gunk off best). Then my dh comes back over the metal with his dremel, a jewelers felt attachment on it and Simichrome polish. The Brasso seems to remove gunk and harder build up better, then the Simichrome creates the best finished look. Every once and awhile the dremel doesn't work, and then I do a last polish with Simichrome by hand. I was having this problem last week and the ladies on here suggested a hand polish when the dremel fails and it worked wonderfully.

My Ergo Pocket Zip - the towels are out and she's finishing up drying. I love this one!

She looks great, I love Ergo bags! When I rehabbed a black one like this I wasn't sure where to attach the hangtag. I debated about attaching it to to zipper pull but I think that I finally decided to use a slightly longer ball chain and attach it to one of the bag straps.

Nice job!

My DH just ordered a Dremel, so I'll give this technique a try to see if it helps! Thanks!

Too funny...I've been having the same debate about the hang tag. Not a fan of it on the strap, so was thinking of putting it on the zipper pull - the longer ball chain is a good idea!

I misspoke! I gave this bag away but I went back and looked at the rehab reveal. When I got it the tag was around the strap on a chain that was too short. I experimented with a longer chain, but I eventually decided to attach it to the zipper pull:
