It photographed well :p It is filthy! Is there an advantage to using the washing machine versus washing in the sink (this is how I have been doing all my glove tanned Coach bags so far). So no conditioner post wash?

My thoughts on washing machine vs sink-and I use both...if the bag is over all dirty and looks like it will need to be scrubbed to get it clean, then I put it in the washing machine. I have put several suede bags in the washer. I think it's easier to get something that's really dirty clean *evenly* in the washing machine. Also, I think it's easier on the leather to roll around in the sudsy water than to be scrubbed. It's hard to evenly scrub the entire surface so you're more likely to end up with a faded spot.

One thing to be aware of if you wet that bag in any way is that I would guess from my experiences with lighter colored bags, it will look worse when it's wet-the brown will show through the color and you'll think you've ruined it. As they dry they look ok though.

I wouldn't be surprised if it faded some but I'm really not familiar with that style. The good news would be that if it's already supposed to be distressed I would guess that bag came with different degrees of distress even when it was new.

I would probably condition it with something like Apple or Leather CPR, but not anything as heavy as Black Rocks. Most of my experience with NuBuck is in shoes so use your best judgement on that.

My thoughts are if it's too dirty to carry as is, and the only way to clean it is to get it wet, overall it's less stressfull to the bag to throw it in the washer than to dunk it. Are the straps removable? If so I'd take them off and either skip washing them or wash them separately.

That makes sense, thank you! I think she is washing machine bound. Thank you for the warning not to freak out while she is dry :D

A lot of the darker spots is scuffing I think. I haven't had the chance to wipe it down yet. I think it's such a classic bag so I can maybe live with the scuffs. My grandfather gave me some white leather conditioner so I'm going to try that in an inconspicuous spot to see if it helps. I think it would be really pretty if I can get it a nice bright white again (which I think it originally was). I want to try the other suggestions as well with the paint and see if it'll cover up the majority of the big scuffs.

I would wash it in the sink and if it didn't come clean I might try the washer. No conditioner on nubuc but you should condition the leather trim. You will probably have to massage the nubuc to soften it up after washing.

What do you do if the nubuc is dried out? Does the water just kind of condition it?

I have seen nubuc conditioners out there. They spell it nubuck on the ones have found. It might be something to consider. I had a beautiful nubuc bag before and used reg leather cleaner... :( it turned it very Dengy

What if you were to put a drop of fabric softener in the rinse water? Would that help so it doesn't dry stiff as a board?

I don't know if it'll help but white vinegar is a natural alternative to fabric softener. The smell doesnt linger or you can put a drop of essential oil in with it.

Thanks for the ideas everyone. I will experiment and report back. I keep telling myself she was only $5 and I have to be brave and just go for it! :D

I'm absolutely in love with my $1 yard sale bag. I hope it cleans up nice. I'm going to try mixing the conditioner with some white paint to see if it'll help cover up the BIG scuff a bit. I used conditioner on the front and it they're still a little noticeable but it looks SO much better.

Any dark spots are just shadows. I'm almost afraid to do anything else because I love the bag so much...LOL
