Now that it's been authenticated...here's another project...it's a Bonnie Casin for Meyers bag I found for $15. It's in great shape and no funky smells, so I'll probably just surface clean this one and polish up the hardware rather than the full on bath. There are a number of pen marks inside, but eh...no biggie to me. Isn't she cute??

I have been looking in the UCLA digital archives for Bonnie Cashin's original drawing for your bag. I think that the bag in the figure's right hand in the attached brochure/care card drawing is your bag. It's not exact but very, very close. And I think that the bag under the left arm is my Body Bag!

I also found out that her Meyers bag collection won the Leather Industries of America Award in 1976 and that they came "in a variety of colors such as rum, plum, pewter, and peanut butter."

I think that your bag must be peanut butter! Isn't that a great name for a beautiful brown color?!

Calling all EXPERTS - ;)
I got this at $18 and it looks good BUT only needs a good polish..,
what do yall recommend....

Nice find! If it were my bag I would still give it a bath to clean, shape and plump the leather. Then I would moisturize with Leather CPR and Black Rock Leather N Rich. That's just my opinion.

Here are before and after pics of a Soho Flap that I rehabbed that way. It was in much worse shape than your bag but it came out well. Good luck!

Thank you so much for sharing this!! And...peanut butter is my favorite food!! How awesome that's the bag's color name! I'm having a blast learning all of this history...makes me love all my vintage finds even more.

I know! I suppose that it could be rum but I think of rum as a darker brown color, your bag looks like rich, smooth peanut butter to me!

Hi,
Here's an older bag that Hyacinth has authenticated as a Sonoma Flap Bag from 1994.

It's pebbled leather so I'm not sure how to proceed. I haven't seen any rehabs of pebbled leather that I can remember and in doing a search it seems the only real advise is katev recommending Lexol as opposed to other conditioners.

Does anyone have any additional advise for pebbled leather?

Thanks!

I have rehabbed 3 Sonoma, pebbled leather items and I basically used the same process for all three. Give it a good wash (in the sink or in the washer). Condition with lexol and shine the hardware - pretty simple.

I am sure that you can use other, thin, clear conditioners like leather therapy oil or emu oil on pebbled leather but be careful with thick, opaque conditions like Apple or Leather CPR. If you want to apply a creamy conditioner, use it lightly and wipe off the excess immediately.

Below are pics and info for my Sonoma rehabs, good luck!

Thanks, katev. Is that first bag the one you ended up giving to your niece?

You did such a great job on all of them.

If I remember the auth. thread correctly, this is a nubuck bag. In that case it will need to be treated like a suede bag, washing is fine but no conditioners, just a good brushing.

Thanks, I did give the natural drawstring to me neice and she really liked it!

If your sonoma is a nubuck bag than I agree with Rambler, no conditioners!

So I've been spending lots of TLC time with my Bonnie Cashin gal this afternoon. And I couldn't resist loading her up and taking a pic.

First - this is after the latest round of conditioner. I love how durable old leather is!

Next - here's a modeling shot. She's a cute little thing!

And, finally - what she holds. I was surprised...she's pretty roomy! The joys of a bucket style.

I am just loving her more and more. :)
