You guys can see from my number of posts that I am kind of new here. I don't feel new because I have been reading this thread for weeks. I have enjoyed it so much. I read this thread as well as the Authentication thread. You have inspired me to try what I think is a worthwile and rewarding hobby. I have a good camera and will join in soon with my first rehab.....a black court bag from 1997. Imagine my disappointment when it arrived in the mail in almost perfect condition. I am going to rehab it anyway for I feel certain of a good outcome. Thank you to all of you for our pictures, stories and inspiration.

Lol @ perfect condition! :D

You'll hafta post her over in the new lightweight line thread. We can get a "closer" comparison of these two styles that way. And also, your new Tote. I"m not sure if my shoulder flap is ever going to look good enough. I just can't seem to find a good enough paint match. I just washed off my last paint attempts. And after 15+ years of matching paint and hand touching dust spots off of colored photography I consider myself a pretty good color mixer....I'll try again soon.

All the new reveals are great! Question about Blackrocks. I applied a thin layer last night with a cosmetic sponge and got sidetracked - wiped off excess but did not buff till this morning. Some lint is stuck to leather and leather feels tacky. What should I do? Just let it rest?

Also some dirt came off during the buffing whereas virtually no dirt came off with Leather CPR which is supposed to be a combo cleaner conditioner. ???

I think there are suede cleaners. Most leather products aren't made for suede. I just did a very quick dunk of one with soap and it came out fine. The suede gets a little stiff but you can brush it back to the original texture.

Maybe I will try and dunk it, The lining is pink as well and the suede is so light in color that im not worried about bleeding...Thanks for the advise! :)

Hi Ladies,

Do I need some help on a rehab! :smile1:

Please take a look at these pictures and you'll see a badly beaten up pouch (?). The pictures from the auction were very good so I knew what I was getting into.

Please give me your opinions on how to proceed. I'm assuming a bath first, but since this bag is in such bad shape I'm stuck on what to do next.

I have the following conditioners: Apple Leather Care, Leather CPR, Blackrocks and thanks to katev I now have Emu oil. If there's another you think I should have to use on this, please let me know.

Thanks in advance. :sos:

I have my first finished bag and wanted to say thank you to everyone for all the wonderful information on this thread! I bought this bag at my local Goodwill.
I bathed this bag in wool wash and then did an initial conditioning with Leather CPR. I then moved on to a mixture of 1 T Leather CPR with 1/2 tsp Linen acrylic paint mixed in. I used a makeup applicator sponge to apply this in a small circular motion. I used this same ratio with a stiff paintbrush and sponge on the strap edges. Lastly I used Brasso on the metal.
This was authenticated on the Authentication Thread as a Shoulder Pouch from the 1987 Lightweight line, thank you awesome authenticators for your time! It was not a very drastic rehab, just needed a little cleaning, conditioning and cover of minor spots.

These after pictures are So Beautiful! Your rehabbing skills (and photography skills) are very good! The bag looks perfect! I am envious of the color. It is truly a year-round bag IMO. Bravo!

p.s. I just realized I spelled worthwhile incorrectly in my introduction post last night. Really! I promise I do know how to spell........most of the time. Grief!:roflmfao:

I can see how that color would be hard to match. It's a taupe but its got a pinkish tint. And they didn't do anything fancy to it but I swear its got "levels " of color. Or something. I dunno.

Good morning ladies. I not sure I'm asking in the right forum but I hope someone here can help. I just purchased two "new" bags that have care instructions I am concerned about. Both say NOT to use conditioner or cleaner and only use a DRY cloth to clean! First is the #19312; Kristine round woven satchel the other is #19312; Madison Lindsey embossed metallic leather. Has anyone here used Apple Garde on either of these? I would like to protect them but also don't want to ruin the leather. Thank you for your help/suggestions!

I should add that the Lindsey is embossed metallic "swede" leather! Thanks again!

Her hangtag is split so I thought I would call customer service soon. I also need one for my courier pouch :smile1: I had to laugh when you replied to look in the thread for my bag's sister, I will do a search and find her.

I prefer to keep the original hangtag with the bag when possible. You can easily use some leather-safe fabric glue to reattach both sides of the hangtag.

I think you'll be amazed at what a good bath will do. My zippered clutch was about the same age and condition and came out great. I experimented with dye on mine but it wasn't necessary or even really recommended. I just wanted to try it out.

How dry is the leather? I would say get it as clean as possible and if its not super dry, a few coats of apple or leather cpr and finish with blackrocks will do it.

Mine was so dirty-no spots, just years of grime permeating the leather, that after an initial dunk and scrub I ran her through the washing machine.

I agree that a bath and lots of conditoning and black rocks along with metal polish will really help. Here are before and after pics of a zippered slim clutch large 9555 that I recently rehabbed:

exactly...there's like a pinkish taupe, and there's a grayish cast. But the wrong color match on that grayer one looks like you're putting "dirt" color on it.

This will probably immensely improve just after an initial bath. These older incredibly heavy leathers from that old NYC/USA era seem to just transform in a bath. Your conditioner assortment is perfect so you will be good to go once it's bathed. And once its dry we can better assess it because I imagine what we see now might be different at that point.
