I spent yesterday afternoon on the patio conditioning bags and relaxing. It's gorgeous here. The good thing about our climate is if you stay out of the sun, it's very comfortable.

I'm tired of conditoning leather. I actually have four bags actively in progress...the red swinger or whatever she's called, and strangely enough, three white bags.

I think I'm going to end up having one major unforeseen issue with the red bag. The leather is softening pretty well with leather CPR, however there is what I assume is another piece of leather between the lining on the inside of both kisslocks. In otherwords, if you open the kisslocks, the back side of them is lined, and the inside of the bag is lined. There is a smaller piece of leather between those two linings that the inner kisslock is mounted on. I noticed it before I dunked the bag-it feels like cardboard, and there's no way to condition it. As long as it doesn't deteriorate, fine, but if it does, I'm not sure what will happen to that inner kisslock.

It probably is cardboard, leather would be too thick with the fabric. It should be pretty sturdy stuff though, the older bags were made to be workhorses.

I have several bags that have "stiffening" sandwiched in between and completely enclosed by leather...like my Roll Bag and the Casey I just finished. Once completely dry, they seem as stiff and sturdy as they were before. If it is cardboard, I certainly would not "massage" it, like you might do the unlined leather. Just my two cents!

I'm pretty sure it's leather, it felt just like leather when it was wet, and the all leather, unlined bags like this have three layers of leather in the same spot.

I don't think cardboard would have held up all these years either. Plus, I can't imagine Coach using cardboard in such a key piece of the bag, not only is it a quality issue but I doubt they have a shortage of leather around the factory. :smile1:

So this is the bag I mentioned that I was thinking about dying. I believe it's a drawstring flap from the lightweights collection, (eBay, $23.50) but as I was beginning to post this I thought I'd verify the name so I simultaneously posted in the ID thread:

Here is the reason I thought I might have to dye her:

As I suspected from the auction photos, someone had tried to clean the ink. You can sort of see a yellowish stain around the blue stain in this picture-which is what made me think I for sure wouldn't be able to get it out:

turns out I was right, but it does look a little better after a hairspray dunk, and finally a trip through the washer:

The cool thing about the location, however was that it was barely noticeable. I had to hunt for it when I first received the bag. So after washing, I figured I'd carry her as is, for a little while, and if she got dirty or I just couldn't stand it, I'd dye her later.

This is what finally convinced me it was OK to leave it alone, I had just conditioned it and set it down while I did something on the computer, I looked over and she looked like this, you can't even see the spot and I was pretty close.

But, this story has an even happier ending-as I had to go to Wal-Mart yesterday and as I walked past the arts and craft section and I remembered that someone (Joodlz?) mentioned that "linen" was a perfect match for their white bag, so I figured "what the heck?" and picked some up too and touched up the bottom and used it to correct some edging issues on the strap.

I used it full strengh on the strap, which I didn't take a picture of, and then added some lexol and put a couple of coats on the bottom. It probably could use one more coat, but I'm happy as is. I may have to break out the paint again for the other two white bags I'm working on so I may touch her up then.

Besides the ink, this bag was pretty clean to begin with, she honestly looks like new now so I'm super happy with her!

Y'all have such a wealth of information here. I'm amazed how the bags look before and after you work on them. I won red Legacy West Hobo with brown fabric lining on eBay a few years ago. I love the bag but I haven't carried it due to some spots that look like coffee or maybe soda dripped near the bottom of the bag. Has anyone tried to give a red leather, fabric lined bag a bath? If so could you please share your results and or suggestions. I don't want to ruin the bag but I also don't want to carry it with the stains. Tia for your help!
