Wow...she's just a stunner ! LOOOVE that color!

And your collection is really WONDERFUL. A nice variety and a perfect, manageable amount of rehab work...this rehab thing can get away from you and then you start feeling overwhelmed (like me:p)
Thank you ; ) I try to only do one at a time and I usually end up giving them to friends or selling them to them (no profit) just because I love doing it:D If you're overwhelmed just send some of your over on my way:yes: lol

OK, I haven't had much to post lately, because everything is unfinished but I am pretty much done with this old-style navy Rambler I came across on eBay for $50. The bag is in really good shape. The piping was faded, and it needed reshaping and plumping. It was also pretty dirty, but there was nothing that I didn't expect to come off with a good bath:

Here are the befores:
come on lets see the afters :woohoo:

And...none of the after pictures are that great, but I'm posting them anyway. :) I had some navy wood stain left over from about 10 years ago that i used to touch up all the piping. I had to put some water in the bottle because I think it was completely solidified, but it liquified and worked fine. I conditioned with Leather CPR right after I touched up the piping to reduce any lines, but there is nothing noticeable. I followed with some Black Rocks but to be honest, the leather was pretty soft and cushy and in great shape for an old NYC bag:

It came without a hangtag so I grabbed the tags off my denim glam tote. However, they just look awkward in this picture but that's ok-if I don't post these I'll probably never get back to it.

these old Ramblers are huge! I mean, I knew the measurements, but I still didn't expect it to be this big. I pulled out my basic bag for perspective, because just about all of us have one, but these pictures don't really illustrate the difference very well. I probably should have taken a picture with my stewardess too.

Too much glare in this, but maybe you can tell how deep it is:

Even this doesn't show how the Rambler "swallows" up the basic bag, there's actually plenty of room for more stuff in there!

Do you wash bags because you buy them old, dirty and in need of cleaning? Or does the washing rejuvenate/moisturize the leather? I have repeatedly used the lotion on my old Coach bag, and then it looks good, but it always reverts to the faded and dull look. I know I should have used the conditioner on it more frequently over the years, but it has been stored away for some time. I really don't want to dye it or add a polish. But can the leather be helped? Thanks.

The answer to your first question is: both. I have washed old dirty bags, but I just washed one that that was pretty clean but smooshed. It's almost dry now, but washing it "fluffed" the leather and allowed me to reshape it. The bag I posted above was pretty flat also, though I stuffed it for the before pictures, and now it feels firm and is shaped correctly.

What kind of bag do you have? Pictures would help immensely. I've never tried the coach conditioner.

I posted the pix before in ID thread, here is a link: http://s1060.photobucket.com/albums/t459/KittyKwilter/

I am the original owner, there are three bags, black, navy, bone. They are Austin bags, from 1992-1993 (Hyacinth dated them for me.) Bone is in great shape. Black and navy are faded, black the most presumably bc I used it the most. Coach used to sell a conditioner; now they sell a moisturizer. Don't know if they're the same. The bags are soft and supple, and look pretty nice. But the piping is pretty faded, and in some places on the black especially, dry and a bit crackled looking. The moisturizer helps for a while. Maybe it is being abxorbed and I just have to do a lot more?

they are super cute bags! Dunking them sometimes makes them feel softer, sometimes they feel dryer after a bath. I suspect what those really need is some BlackRock conditioner to darken the leather a little. If the piping is so worn that the dye is gone, it may not help, but if it's just dry, this should help. I just googled it and found this link to give you an idea about the product. I've purchased it from Nordshoe on eBay, but it's also available at tack shops and such:

I would probably only dunk those if you felt like they need reshaping, which it doesn't look to me like they need.

Thanks. I guess I'll keep trying to find Blackrocks. I haven't found it yet locally. I found some other brands of saddle and leather products, but don't know if they are equivalent. There are several Lexol products, which is the best for these bags? The original or the one for vegetable tanned leather? Thanks.

I personally found that I like apple or leather CPR better than Lexol. I know Katev likes Lexol. I think you're going to get a lot of different answers to that question, but we seem consistent on the Blackrocks for evening out the color on dark bags. I'm working on a light colored Patricia's Legacy and I don't think I'm going to use it on that because I don't want to risk darkening.

Which reminds me, I haven't tried Obenauf's yet, and I've been meaning to ask what the difference is to those of you who have.

I asked this before. Docride suggests using both. Obenauf is a wax which waterproofs the leather.

Just a thought - you may want to polish the brass rings shiny too! It is amazing how differently a bag looks when the metal details are freshen up!

Leather CPR is my favorite but Apple is fine too. I use Lexol on delicate or pebbled textured leathers or for a quick cleaning and conditioning before putting a bag into storage until next season.
