This looks beautiful! Great rehab work

Im so excited to share this one. I have been rehabbing this bag for seriously the past 2 weeks but so worth it!! I found it for $9.99 at Savers. It was tough, rough, scratched and dirty but it came out so nicely.

This was the one that I asked about the slice in the leather. Didn't fix it much but its on the back so its ok.

80's NYC Burgundy Basic Bag

Your NYC rambler is looking gorgeous, and the size looks very usable. Damn, now I'm going to want one of those too....

And...none of the after pictures are that great, but I'm posting them anyway. :) I had some navy wood stain left over from about 10 years ago that i used to touch up all the piping. I had to put some water in the bottle because I think it was completely solidified, but it liquified and worked fine. I conditioned with Leather CPR right after I touched up the piping to reduce any lines, but there is nothing noticeable. I followed with some Black Rocks but to be honest, the leather was pretty soft and cushy and in great shape for an old NYC bag:

It came without a hangtag so I grabbed the tags off my denim glam tote. However, they just look awkward in this picture but that's ok-if I don't post these I'll probably never get back to it.

these old Ramblers are huge! I mean, I knew the measurements, but I still didn't expect it to be this big. I pulled out my basic bag for perspective, because just about all of us have one, but these pictures don't really illustrate the difference very well. I probably should have taken a picture with my stewardess too.

Too much glare in this, but maybe you can tell how deep it is:

Even this doesn't show how the Rambler "swallows" up the basic bag, there's actually plenty of room for more stuff in there!

Can someone please explain to me how to use the mulit quote thing so that I can thank you all for your nice comments re my orange skinny tote, without filling up an entire page?

You start with the first message that you want to select. Don't click on the "Quote" button, click on the button next to it that looks like 2 sheets of paper. The little green dot will turn red.

Repeat the process with the next messages until you reach the last message in the group. Click the "Quote" button on that message and all of the posts will appear in the message box.

The just reply in the normal manner and click "Submit Reply"

On the bottom right of each post next to the quote button is a button with a green plus sign (it's the symbol in the middle). Click on that button for each post you want to quote. Then for the last one you want to quote, click on the quote button. They will all show up in the reply box.

Now she's fat & sassy!

The only reason I gave this one a bath was to shape it. It was clean, just smooshed. I the after pix she's not stuffed because it was right before I brought her in from her final airing/drying. I can tell you though that if I lay her flat on her side, unstuffed, she'd keep that shape.

What a difference a bath makes! Both the Rambler and this one are wonderful...great job, as usual!

Another mystery solved...thanks!

Not a good picture in the lot, but this bag was a steal at $50. It was badly listed as a rambler's legacy with one bad picture that really emphasized the worm, faded piping.

All it needed was a bath and a little touch up on the dye and I have a great NAVY bag! Some times I feel bad cuz I cant get that $5 rehab project here, but this one is well worth what I paid.

yes it's a good price for a rarer Rambler bag!! And I've not seen a Navy one before.

What do you guys recommend to clean and condition waxed leather like the poppy pushlock hippie waxed leather? My friend has a beige one that has some scuff marks and some fading on the corners, would baby wipes or magic eraser work for the dirt and what kind of paint would you recommend for the faded corners? or can you even paint it then put leather wax over it?

I am not familar with the waxed leather, do you have the coach care card that came with it? You could call Coach customer service and ask for the care instructions that were included with that specific style bag.

Could you post pics (or at least the link to an ebay auction for the same bag with lots of pics) so we can get a look at it?

Ok, I've never done a rehab is my life but got intrigued by this thread. I also fell for the City Bag, SO I went to the bay and found one for $45, which seemed like a good price to me as they're selling for $278 at Coach right now (and those are remakes, not the nice vintage like I got). I was so excited that I forgot to take before pics : / It was in ok condition to begin with (wasn't sure of my rehab abilities) but had some scratches, was a bit dirty and dull... And to my surprise, SMELLED! Cigarettes and must. Ew. It reminded me why I don't like buying used - I get the heebie jeebies.

So it went into a warm Dawn dish detergent bath for 45 minutes. Cool rinse. Second bath! I let this one sit while I went out shopping. When I got home, I rinsed again... Then dried and stuffed with paper towels. I hung it out side to air dry. Brought it in for the night and hung it indoors. I changed out the paper towels in the morning. The next day, when it was dry, I rubbed it down with diluted alcohol to try to get the smell out. By this point the bag looked so CLEAN and pretty... just smelly. Let it dry... Another alcohol rub down... And another. I think I did that 3 times. Then I left it open and hanging inside for 2 days.

The smoke is GONE!!! It still smells a little... vintagey... But I think that's the raw leather inside. It doesn't smell bad at all and I'll be comfortable putting my stuff inside. Last night I conditioned it with Apple leather conditioner and viola! It's beautiful! Even my mother (who thought I was insane buying a project bag) is impressed and thinks it came out beautiful. These pictures don't do it justice.

Thanks to everyone in this thread because I couldn't have done it without the existence of the Coach rehab subforum!
