DON'T DO IT.

Wherever you heard that nonsense, whoever is still spreading it is an IDIOT.

Purse leather isn't meant to be oiled, especially not with something that is almost impossible to remove and will turn rancid. WHERE is the site that's posting this information?

I've been working on a couple of Compact Pouches this week. One brown, the other black. The brown one is older (NYC late 70s to 87) and had severe cracking on its skinny strap. Bad cracking. I had a thought to fill the cracks with glue, then cover with acrylic. NOT! The glue, although suggested on the package for leather, didn't penetrate very well at all. It just sat on top and dried like rubber cement. Lumpy, ugly rubber cement! The package said stray dried glue could be removed with an eraser, so I started erasing, and erasing and erasing. Unfortunately much of the finish came off too in the worst-worn places. Then I started mixing acrylic colors to get a close match to the dark, reddish brown. Dabbed it on with a sponge-tipped eyeshadow applicator and it filled in a bit. I will repeat the process, bending the strap to try to fill in as much as possible. I've put a little Leather CPR over the acrylic and it didn't pick up the color, and it seemed to penetrate, so she's resting before another fill-in in the morning. Pics are below. The first 3 are of the gluey-mess, the last one is after acrylic and CPR. Though not out of the woods yet, I think she'll be use-able!

Hope this helps...most of my rehab efforts so fast and furiously over the last several weeks have been in an effort to protect my bags, as I never had the knowledge or skills I needed before. I'm about at the end of the oldest Coach Leatherware bags, and have enjoyed good success, thanks to the education I've received here. Good Luck!

AND Thanks Everyone for the zipper tips!

Thanks, it does look better! It will be hard to match acrylic to the dark burgandy color but that may be my best option. Right now I am just conditioning like crazy to keep it from cracking further!

I once tried olive oil on a non-coach bag and it turned nasty and it gave me a skin rash so I will not use it again; but maybe it was the type of olive oil I used. I just grabed whatever was in my kitchen cabinet so I don't know.

Angelaria and a few others have used extra virgin olive oil with good results and have posted links to sites that indicate it has been used for a long time to maintain equestrian leather.

sometimes, when I don't know the answer to something, I rely on ''instincts" and google /leather research. I've just never felt comfortable with the idea of putting oil on leather. IF I were willing to sacrifice a bag to "research", maybe. I know that some methods used on equestrian leather are translated to purse leather, but saddles and horse things are a much harder different leather being used for different things. And anytime I"ve googled this, I've come up with JUST enough resistance to this from people who seem to have a very solid background in leather care to just decide to never try it. There ARE special leather oils out there. I'd find those first before I"d try food based oil. Again, this is just based on my instincts. But ya gotta trust 'em sometimes.

I know that this has been discussed recently but I can't seem to find the information. The burgandy small shoulder bag that I am rehabbing is incredibly dry and has small cracks in the leather at the folds and on the strap. The strap was like beef jerky!

I wonder if the reason that this bag lost color so badly when I washed it has anything to do with the dryness of the leather?

While it was drying I treated it with a heavy application of emu oil and it just drank it in! It's still drying but I have just given it an application of leather cpr to try and prevent it from cracking further.

Has anyone come up with a good solution for repairing those little cracks in the leather caused by dry rot? Thanks!

I haven't figured it out yet. I've tried all the things you have. The red NYC era satchel I have (in my rehab pile photos) just won't get better, and it's not a bag I can really "dunk" for long either. Though I DID lightly dunk it just long enough to wet it for reshaping with a mild cold water wash and surprisingly, even though it's dry, it didn't bleed nearly as bad as the Tribeca...again..GO FIGURE... how are we supposed to know which bag is safe to wash ??? LOL. But I have decided to just paint it! Which I NEVER wanted to do. But I plan on keeping it, so figured what the heck.

Alright so not the most drastic rehab to date but a good outcome none the less. My friend and I found this bag at Value Village for $39.99. After convincing the SA to give us 20% off for the spots we scored it for $31.99.

It was authenticated as a 91-92 "Spectator Scout Bag"

First two pics are before, then afters.

gosh, that's so pretty!!!!

I watched another auction last week for a white tote the same as yours, and it ended about $30. I didn't bid. I'm not sure whether to advertise stuff currently on Ebay, in case people from here are bidding on it. None of them are my auctions ever.

There is a white Cashin double sided kisslock bag like the red one in Joodlz signature up for auction at the moment, sitting at around $20. I believe you have one too Jess? I can't bid on it - no internationals, but white is not me anyway. The same seller also has a very cute Cashin for Myers kisslock evening bag, also very cheap. Both look to be in very nice condition, just in case anyone is interested....

Actually, make that similar to Joodlz. Not sure if it is exactly the same - it's a tall and relatively narrow bag with kisslocks on both sides at the top and an open centre compartment. I've seen a few at high prices BIN, but this one is cheap so far

you might be talking about the one I found?? It went for $60. (I wish it was $30 LOL) but it's pretty rare, so I was very happy to have her at anything less than $100!!!
