Wow! I am seriously in awe of your thrifting skills. I think I need a good sit down and a cup of tea!

...and the rest of my summer free time. I finally got enough nerve to drag out my bins full of thrift shop Coach fixer-uppers. Anybody wanna become a refurb. intern ? LOL.

Maybe try out the inside flap first and see if it loses colour? I just dunked my orange kisslock tote and the colour has been really stable, no loss at all. I used cold water. They all vary so much, but that colour is beautiful and I can understand why you wouldn't want to lose any of it.

I am getting ready to work on 3 red bags! Two of them are burgandy and they are really dirty and definitely need baths, so I will have to take my chances with color loss.

The 3rd bag is a "true red" large shoulder sac 9730 from around 1989 and it is fairly clean and in very good condition. It does have some dirty areas and there are fairly extensive water marks on the bottom of the bag but that didn't show up in the photos.

I am debating surface cleaning versus dunking. There are AT pics of the bag at the link below, what are your opinions? Thanks!

Your burgandy classic shoulder bag is going to be just beautiful. I am using my tan one at the moment, and loving it

Washing in cool water is a good idea, too bad I didn't read that before I decided to go ahead and "take the plunge"!

I started by dunking the 2 burgandy bags in warm sudsy water and there was some color release into the water, but not bad at all.

Encouraged, I gave the red duffle a good looking-over and decided to wash it too. I added it to the suds with the other 2 bags and the water still just had a light redish tinge so I was encouraged to continue.

When I started rubbing the bags with a soft cloth to try and get out the dirt - that's when the water really started to turn red! My fingers were staining red too, so I had to put on rubber gloves.

The small burgandy bag seemed to bleed the most. By the time I was done the water looked like blood!

The rinse water had a lighter red color and the bags are drying now. They look okay for the moment, but they are wet so we will have to wait and see what happens.

Below are some pics of the washing process.

Pic 1: Hardware, the 2 burgandy bags had bad verdigris so I had to remove the turnlocks; they are soaking in vinegar and water.

Pic 2: Reddish-tinged suds after dunking and soaking the bags.

Pic 3: Blood-red water after vigorous washing.

Pic 4: Reddish rinse water and red-stained fingers.

Pic 5: Stuffed and drying.

Oops, sorry, I am a few days out of date here.

I have to say that the verdigris was really awful on the 2 burgandy bags!

I knew that the convertible clutch had bad verdigris but I didn't realize that the small shoulder bag had it too! When I was getting ready to wash them I noticed a darkish, greenish line around the turnlock on the so I decided that it might have "a little verdigris" also.

Since I was removing the turnlock on the convertible clutch I decided to also remove the hardware on the small shoulder bag. I couldn't believe all the green gunk underneath the brass when I got the hardware off! Yuck!

DemRam says that she always removes the hardware for her rehabs but that hasn't been my practice in the past - maybe I should start doing it all the time!

This is an early 90s Kimball Bag, authenticated by Hyacinth a few days ago. Follow the link for the before pics: http://forum.purseblog.com/coach-shopping/authenticate-this-coach-694619-713.html#post21917630. I paid $5.99 at a thrift store in Hilton Head, SC, in 2005.

I did my usual rehab bath with extra strength Dawn, though slightly warmer to help take the kinks out of the strap - and it worked well. Reshaping her was tricky as I think she was over-stuffed in her past life. Kinda like the zipper at the top of the bag was stretched. And possibly replaced, as there is a lot of bad, double stitching all around it! It's really hinky zipper...sometimes it misses a couple of teeth near the beginning and doesn't zip right. Does anyone have any experience with this? Any suggestions? I wonder if there might be debris in the zipping mechanism.

Conditioned her with lots of Leather CPR and touched up the strap edges and zipper pull edges with black acrylic. Finished with Blackrocks 2x, buffed with a horsehair brush and polished the brass (unfortunately losing its plating).

Below are 2 after pics. Now she's clean, shining and happy...there's nothing like Coach leather!

I have this bag. I just love the shape. I certainly did not get it for the fabulous price you paid. It was an eBay win. The seller listed it as "Dark Navy Blue." But, it looks black to me.

Funny that you just experienced this because I did the same thing last night. After removing the hardware I noticed how gross it was!! I boiled about 2 cups of water, put it in the sink and mixed it with brasso then let the hardware sit in it for about 15 minutes. Then I rinsed it off, scrubbed the excess verdigris away. Today and applied brasso directly to the hardware and it looks brand new!!

Thanks...OOPS! It's a horsehair "mixture" brush. I suppose any garden variety horsehair shoe brush would work as well. My hubby has a bigger one that's just horsehair, but I like this one as it fits in my hand better and is good for getting in tight spots...really makes leather shine!
what do you use/how do you use your horsehair brush??

Alright so not the most drastic rehab to date but a good outcome none the less. My friend and I found this bag at Value Village for $39.99. After convincing the SA to give us 20% off for the spots we scored it for $31.99.

It was authenticated as a 91-92 "Spectator Scout Bag"

First two pics are before, then afters.
