I watched another auction last week for a white tote the same as yours, and it ended about $30. I didn't bid. I'm not sure whether to advertise stuff currently on Ebay, in case people from here are bidding on it. None of them are my auctions...

Shhh...I was hoping no one noticed those... ;)

I once tried olive oil on a non-coach bag and it turned nasty and it gave me a skin rash so I will not use it again; but maybe it was the type of olive oil I used. I just grabed whatever was in my kitchen cabinet so I don't know.

Angelaria and a few others have used extra virgin olive oil with good results and have posted links to sites that indicate it has been used for a long time to maintain equestrian leather.

Equestrian leather is a lot less "delicate" (for lack of a better word) and usually thicker than handbag leather though, isn't it? My ex used to use things on his outdoor gear like boots that I'd never even consider using on bags, it just seems that it would leave a residue or maybe stain any other material that rubbed against it. I've used mink oil on my own leather boots but for the same reason wouldn't want a mink oiled bag rubbing against my clothes.

And I just don't want my bags smelling like olive oil! :D

I agree with you, it's not for me!

There is a white Cashin double sided kisslock bag like the red one in Joodlz signature up for auction at the moment, sitting at around $20. I believe you have one too Jess? I can't bid on it - no internationals, but white is not me anyway. The same seller also has a very cute Cashin for Myers kisslock evening bag, also very cheap. Both look to be in very nice condition, just in case anyone is interested....

Actually, make that similar to Joodlz. Not sure if it is exactly the same - it's a tall and relatively narrow bag with kisslocks on both sides at the top and an open centre compartment. I've seen a few at high prices BIN, but this one is cheap so far

yep the white double kisslock is like her red and my pink one I believe. Yeah white isn't actually a color I'd go for usually. But a rarer bag is worth it. I've heard others say the Meyers bags weren't made quite as well as the old coach but that could depend on the bag I suppose. Very cute bags...I've watchlisted them both a few days ago.

I've been watching them too, obviously, I expect the price to swoop out of reach, but I don't have these styles nor a white bag so I'm hopeful.

As far as Meyer's vs coach: I have essentially the same bag from both manufacturers. There is a huge difference in the quality of the hardware, leather, stitching, probably even the tanning method. And while the two bucket bags are essentially the same, they arent made from the same pattern and the coach style is just better, IMO.

I'm going to start a thread eventually, I just haven't had a chance to take pix.

I haven't seen this mentioned but I was curious ( I could have missed the post, sorry in advance if it has been mentioned before ) can you use saddle soap on a hand bag?

Mixed answers on that question. I think it's not good on delicate leather. It's designed for equestrian leather which is much hardier, kind of like boot leather is hardy and designed to withstand more. I've not tried it because I've read JUST ENOUGH cons against it from people who work with handbag leathers. I think short term results on strong leather is probably good. But apparently the problem according to some, is the harsher PH factor of saddle soap. I personally won't use it, but that doesn't mean you can't try it on a bag that you feel needs to be fixed up because its otherwise unwearable. Over in the Hermes forum, Docride has more experience with leather and she does a lot of equestrian leather repair too, and she probably is good to answer that question. Her threads are very valuable resources of cleaning and repair.

Along with what Jessi319 mentioned, saddle soap also tends to leave a white residue along the seams. It gets into the stitching and thread openings and it's really hard to get rid of it. If you try it, try to avoid getting it into the seams and stitching.

Thank you for the answers on the saddle soap... I won't use it, I am not familiar enough with the rehab stuff to try something out of what is tried and true, I happened to see it when I was at the store and thought might be a good idea to ask before I bought it and made a mistake using it. Thank you very much for the information I really appreciate it, and I will check out the things and thread that have been suggested.

I hope you all are having a great weekend and having lots of fun... Don't forget the sunscreen :smile1:

I googled "shoe shine video" and found this on YouTube:

After applying Blackrocks and letting it dry, usually overnight, I use a similar technique - short, light, brisk strokes, changing directions, working all over the bag. It just makes the leather glow! Hope this helps.
Thank you so much for your suggestions. I went out today and bought the same Kiwi brush you had in your picture. I'm going to try it out in a few days, just one question for you:

After applying blackrocks do you wipe off excess with a clean dry cloth, then let it sit overnight, and then brush it?

Or do you apply black rocks, rub in circular motions and let that sit overnight without wiping off excess with a cloth??

Sorry for the continued questions but it sounds like you know what your doing and I uh....don't

I'm still pretty new to using Blackrocks...I apply it very sparingly and work a small section at a time. I lightly rub it in with a circular motion, then remove any excess right away with a paper towel. When I've completed the bag, I wipe it all over once more and let it rest overnight (2-3 hours minimum, if you're in a hurry). Sometimes I repeat the application...depends on what the surface looks like after the first time. If it's an older bag, I'll usually do the second application. After the overnight rest, I brush until I get the surface to glow.

Here's a link about Blackrocks from Dockride's Hermes Leather Care thread. She is quite the expert on luxury leather!

I hope others will add their 2 cents here, as many have much more experience than I have. I will say Blackrocks is an amazing product though! Hope this helps...good luck.

Just got a vintage City Bag and it kinda smells. I want to give it a bath. I read somewhere on this thread how to do that sagely a while back, but now I can't find it. Can someone please give me instructions for bathing/drying? TIA!

There's lot of information at the 2 threads below. The first thread is my basic process but I have changed practices a little to add the use of "black rock leather n rich" conditioner to even out the color and cover scuffs and scratches.
