And speaking of RED...I like the grocery store idea! This is the last you'll see of this bag...I think...I've had it! Not my most successful rehab, that's for sure, but it added to my experience and truly, she's better off than before. There was lots of black below the buckles on both sides, minimized by a 2nd bath, some hotel bar soap, conditioning and Blackrocks 2x. Blackrocks really deepened the color depth, not that it's darker, just has more of a glow. She'll get out occasionally...probably after dark!

The bag looks very good in the picture but I know what you mean, sometimes I take a pic without flash and although it darkens the color it shows up the flaws more clearly.

I hate to walk away from a bag but sometimes it's just not worth it to keep trying. I am proud of myself because I walked away from 2 potential rehab prospects this week (nice bags at good prices) because I knew that I probably wouldn't be happy with the results!

I have 2 burgandy bags currently waiting for rehab and at least one of them absolutely needs a bath, so I hope she survives the ordeal!

That made me laugh! And reminds me I have photos I need to post, I am working on my two Kisslock totes, and doing piping repairs on both... and I just dyed that makeup bag that was so faded out. I want to wait until all the stuff is actually complete though, and I forgot some before pics, as usual! I am like a kid in a candy store, I check the mail at 4pm everyday, and immediately start work on anything that comes in!

did you get the make up bag with the blue striped lining? Can't wait to see it if it's the one I am thinking of. And the rest of the bags you are working on also!! If only I were a SAHM or just plain had MORE TIME to really just work on bags all day!! I"d have so much more to show for myself. I am living vicariously through you guys these days!!

I'm new. I am trying to find out about cleaning up my older Coach bags. I have several from the 1980's. I have been reading about washing with Ivory. Will that remove color, especially from red? Also, I asked Coach about a strap repair, and they said they don't do that. I have one with a strap attachment that needs work. I noticed you sent one for grommets. If they do that, wouldn't they re-attach a strap? Thank you. Deb (Ohio)

As others have said, red is tricky and you might lose color with a bath. I often get a little color release into the bath water with black, navy, brown, and tan bags but it is not significant and doesn't harm the bag.

Bright-colored bags like red and orange are different. Sometimes they go through a bath without problems and sometimes there is significant color lost through the process.

If you could post pics of your bags it would be easier to advise you. Are your bags glove-tanned leather or made of fabric or another type of leather? Are they lined or unlined? Are they damaged or just dirty? How bably are they soiled?

If the red bag is unlined, glove-tanned leather and it isn't badly soiled, marked, or spotted - you could try surface cleaning before resorting to a bath.

Vacuum it out well, clean it inside and out with lysol non-bleach wipes or non-alcohol baby wipes, shine up the hardware with a good-quality metal polish, and condition the bag with a good quality conditioner like lexol, apple, leather cpr, etc.

Good luck!

I think it looks good! I tried to clean my little red multi-function purse, but it bled red dye. I am the original owner but it was getting dark around the edges so wanted to try. I think it is the water buffalo hide, so that can't be cleaned with the cleaner. Ooops! Well, it looks OK but I don't know if it is now not color fast. So your results look pretty nice to me. What is black rocks? Thank you.

Thanks, everyone, for the compliments...Blackrocks Leather N Rich is a carnuba wax cream (for lack of a better description) that is applied lightly usually twice (let dry between coats), then buffed. It works wonders on evening out color and blending in light scratches. It seems to make the color actually glow and buffs up beautifully. I've just started using it this week. You can find it in tack shops or online. Both of my red bag rehabs bled some color, this one worse than the Basic Bag...but it's still RED!

I think you can post pix after your tenth post. So tell us about your pets :)

I have a tribeca 9098 but no iPad to test. Its cool though, a dark purple, almost black. I dunked it with no adverse effects, but since its dark, thats not surprising. I would take a picture but I'm traveling.

I wish I had thrift stores close enough to were I live I live in a small town... Maybe I will venture out to a bigger city and see what I can find :smile1: OoooHHHHH thank you so much for telling me the name, Do you think the Tribeca would be big enough to hold an ipad with an otterbox case??

Thank you so much for the help :smile1:

Yes, I got the makeup bag with the blue striped lining. The lining was somehow adhered inside the bag, so not possible to pull it out. The lining was clean, with no blemishes at all, so I did not want to wet it. The outside of the bag was completely faded, with all black rubbed off the edges and corners.
I tried some Meltonian shoe polish just for fun and to test it. It worked really really well and wouldn't rub off after applied, and it did not come off when I washed it either... which makes it perfect for edge touch ups.
I then washed the outside, careful not to wet the inside. I had never tried that on a bag before, but it worked pretty well. I let it dry for about two days (waiting for the leather stain to arrive). The stain arrived yesterday and I applied one coat, it dried almost instantly. I then moisturized with almond oil, and the bag soaked it up.
Today the bag still looks a little faded on some areas where I did not apply the stain enough. I will probably go back over some areas again today. I want to point out that the stain went on very evenly, and did not leave deliniations between application areas which is nice.

I didn't answer the SAHM part before, and let me just say, be careful what you wish for! I haven't had a job in almost 10 years now, my resume is totally out of date, and I get really bored with no kids in the house for the majority of the year (we have three between our two former marriages, 11, 8, and 5, but only during the summer). I have my own income from being a disabled veteran. Although I am very grateful for the fact that I get to do a lot of rehab projects, and that I have so many blessings, I do sometimes wish I had a job to go to and more to do than just rehab Coach bags all day! This thread, and the people here, and the inspiration here, have made a big impact on my life, and it makes me happy to read this thread, and to do this stuff. And, it is my choice not to work, I could, but I choose to travel with my husband while the kids are away during the school year. His job is very travel intensive, and we feel that our marriage might be adversely affected if we were separated all that time. I know each of us has our own unique story, and reason we do this, and it makes my day to see all the amazing work we do.

Very good points. I've worked non-stop since high school, but thankfully my current job lets me have a bit more freedom than I used to have (though I had a job that I loved more before) but I use that time to take care of my 6 year old whom I feel blessed to have had later in life and want to experience the joy of that as much as possible since he's gonna be it for us! And then I decided to combine my love of purses and Coach refurbishes and started a little ebay side work, which takes way more time than I could have imagined...but I enjoy it. This forum is wonderful because different people in different backgrounds, life situations, and even different countries are alll here helping and admiring and advising. I wanted to do like William and do a "1000th post"/ introduce myself bio, but blew right past 1000 without even realizing it LOL. But my life isn't that interesting anyway haha, even though I consider it a good life. your life sounds fascinating :D

6 is such a cute age!! The idea of E-Bay side work is also what motivated me starting the whole rehab thing, but now that I have my collection I can't seem to decide which bag to list first! I am sure one of these days it will finally hit me and I will list a bunch of them, but in the meantime I am learning more by having them nearby.
I started staying home so many years ago because of my son. He was so cute I didn't want to leave him with anyone! We bought a nice house in Fresno, and moved there. I gave up my job thinking that I would find a new job in Fresno, but the job market there is awful, and short of selling photocopiers or insurance, there was not much for me to do. Then our son was a handful and a half, so it was really hard to find childcare for him anyway, so that kind of sealed that I would stay home. He has now been diagnosed with Asperger's and ADHD, but that did not help when he was so young and everyone just thought I was a bad mom who didn't know how to discipline her child.
Anyway, I know all of this is way off topic! Rehabbing bags is a mediation for me, it is peaceful, and I get to focus on it and enjoy it!

Hi,
I have an older bag that I'd like to dye. Not spot dyeing spots here and there. I'd like to dye the whole bag. It's a mid to late 70's Classic Shoulder Bag or Classic Pouch style 9170 and is a tan color. I posted pictures of it here for authentication:

http://forum.purseblog.com/coach-shopping/authenticate-this-coach-694619-704.html#post21871175

Since I've never done this I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions on how I should pick the color and actually do it. Or should I have it professionally done?

I've never done anything this drastic and want some advice beforehand.

Thanks in advance. :smile1:

Thank you so much for the link I really appreciate it, I do think it would fit the ipad.

I am proud to announce that I am the proud owner of a Coach Hampton Watermelon color, she is so pretty and I won an auction for a pretty suede coach bag today, here is the pretty little number that will be making her home with me :smile1:

Very nice collection Jessi319!

thank you! It's easy to let the collecting get out of control. But I really DO try to buy what I know I"ll carry besides the few older valuable pieces. IT's the only thing that keeps me from buying every geometric and emmie flap bag in every color. LOL. And I will probably sell my littlest bags that are just a bit too small to really work for me.
