I just bought the same wallet, from a different seller. Mine is here:
http://www.etsy.com/transaction/80290641

I was planning to wash it, so I can do so and let you know how it turns out. The best way to get rid of a smell like that is usually to wash it and let it soak, and then keep it in an enclosed small space (maybe a box?) with baking soda while it is drying to help absorb the odors.

Please do so... :D
Wash it how? With soap? Lol.

I want to see if washing the wallet would damage the feel of the leather or make it smaller or bigger in anyway..

But my main concern is taking away the smell. :yucky:

****I just used this item listing for an example, I did not buy this item from the seller magnoliavintage****

I have to do a little happy dance here, and am so excited so I wanted to share. Not only did I get my delivery yesterday, but another came today. It is a burgundy slim kisslock tote that I won off Ebay after asking the seller if she would consider sending it all the way down under. No-one else bid, maybe because the leather was coming out of the front kisslock pocket? Anyway, I have just spent half an hour in my husbands man shed and have borrowed his tools and i have FIXED IT!!! Yay. I will post photos next Monday, when I have my camera cable again (left it at work). Now she's off for a bath.

P.S if we are doing pet stories - the lovely green fellow in my picture is my eclectus parrot Jimi. He sings and speaks in context and amazes me everyday. He had a little chew on my berkeley bag strap yesterday, but I still love him, and the strap is OK

ooh, glad you were able to fix that! The parrot is gorgeous, I've been meaning to ask about it. I had a friend who had an african grey who gave her doberman commands...she had some hilarious stories!

I am loving the pet stories! Since we are sharing, at the link below you will see pics of my pet rabbit, her name is HoneyBunny. The pictures were taken a year ago around Easter and she is bigger now, but she's still a cutie! :D

The bunny, and your nails, are adorable. Someone in our neighborhood bred bunnies and let them loose...they have been doing what bunnies do and taking over. Fortunately they had the good sense to stay away from J-Mo* as I'm pretty sure he wouldn't be too gentle with him. Of course, you never knew with that guy, I'm pretty sure he caught and killed birds out of the air but he might befriend a bunny.

*short for "Justin Monster"

No, in fact, now that she is somewhat dry, I tied paint the stain and hated the way it looked. I conditioned her and she looks marvelous, I'll post to flickr tomorrow. :p

Great! I can't wait to see...that is an awesome bag.

I just rubbed some Black Rocks into the basic bag and it looks soo good. I suspect it will still be kind of uneven when it soaks in but that's ok. I think I will end up happier with this bag since I dyed it.

Not much colour loss from any of those bags?

I love your dogs, they are too cute

Aww, thank you!! My doggies are characters, we treat them like kids when the kids are away with other parents... and the kids love them when they are home during the summer.

No color loss at all, and the two geometrics are already mostly dry. The Willis had to have some edge touch up with acrylic, but otherwise, really easy rehabs today.

And I adore your parrot!!! I had one named Linus when I was a kid living in Mexico. He used to give me kisses and he was amazing. In Bolivia I had one that was really sick, and I used to uncover his cage every morning wondering if he was still alive. My mom brought antibiotics back from the US, and he recovered, after laying in the bottom of his cage on his back for almost six months. He was never tame, and would try to bite my hand every time I went near him, but he eventually learned to talk. Linus never talked, but this one would talk and repeat everything. I was about 16, so I had to watch what was being said in my room so the bird wouldn't tell on me, lol!!!

To wash the wallet you would just put it in the sink and fill it up with water and let it soak. Some people use Dove soap, some use bar soap, it just depends. The older Coach leathers are usually rejuvenated by this process and come out looking great, they are not usually damaged by it. I should get my wallet in the next few days, and when I do I will wash it and post some photos so you can see the before and after and the process. Hopefully then you can figure out what to do with yours.

Has anyone tried using Cetaphil bar cleanser? I would think it would be good to use since it's free of harsh detergents. but it's also technically not soap. any thoughts?

I have not tried it, I would wonder what is in it, and if it might leave any kind of film on the leather where it was used. I generally end up using random hotel bar soap most of the time. I started out with Dove, and then as I progressed and started doing lots of bags, I just found what I had handy was hotel bar soap and it rinses off fine and never leaves any trace. It is also free for me since my husband is in a hotel for 8 months out of the average year. Whatever detergent you use needs to be mild, non-abrasive, and needs to rinse very clean. I think the hotel soap I have ended up using most is Davies Gate Quince, or ProTerra Marine. Since hotels usually have to be careful about causing allergic reactions and have to have soaps that work on most everybody, their soaps seem to also work on leather... and I do not use a lot of soap, I use it mostly on dirty areas, or if I am removing a stain or something. Most of the time plain water is enough to give the bag a good soaking, and to reshape it. I am sure others have their favorites, and I honestly can't wait to hear what everyone else has to say.

So glad you were able to fix your tote--I love the color of that one! Your parrot is gorgeous too!

Ok, so the dance has slowed a little. I discovered a couple of undisclosed slices in the leather of the burgundy tote. They are not all the way through and are about half in inch in length. They are very clean, just like a blade cut to the leather. There are two of them right near each other at the top rear of the bag. My question is - should I put a little glue in the slices to hold them together, so that they don't become holes? Should I do this before or after I condition the bag?

Next question - after using a liquid saddle soap on this bag, I have succeeded in enhancing the stains/ dark marks and lightening the overall colour. Bummer. I would like to darken the leather to minimise the stains, but can't get blackrocks here. Does anyone know the components of blackrock? I have some medical grade pure lanolin, and Coffee&Coach suggested that lanolin and animal oils in general will darken leather. I know you have said olive oil, Angelaira. You use olive oil on your bags don't you?

Any suggestions? I can't post any pics until Monday, but would love to hear your suggestions and opinions.

The bag is still wet at the moment and maybe she will dry better than she looks at the moment, but the cleaning process has exposed some blue paint spots as well as various old splashes of something dark and streaky.

This old girl has had a hard life and is in great need of tlc

That's too bad but I am sure you can greatly improve her looks. I would lightly glue before conditioning. I do use Blackrocks but I don't know the exact components of it. Maybe you could look it up online and find something similar in Australia. Obenaufs is good also (it basically conditions and makes the leather water resistant) and will darken it--not sure if it will darken it as much as you need it to.
I am wrestling with the same problem with a tan watermelon tote that drank up the conditioner and came out very mottled and uneven looking. I was surprised because the Blackrocks usually helps to even out the color. I ended up giving her two baths (one using a scrub sponge) and she came out better but I am still in the process of layering the conditioner on. KateV was right when she said rehabbing tan bags can be a challenge! Usually I have good luck but this tote is giving me a run for my money.
I am sure the other girls will chime in with some advice, too. Good luck!!
