CITES, travel and exotics

I bought my croc birkin and KP from H Tokyo last month and it came with CITES certificate free of charge. The resellers in Tokyo told me their exotics do not come with CITES certificate. Hopefully someone can chime in if it is possible to apply a replacement certificate from Hermes stores.

The CITES certificate is a funny one.... On one alligator birkin that we got recently, the cites certificate was in the box, but for an alligator wallet, it was not. But more importantly there was nothing on the certificate, which is a photocopy document, that identifies the bag (eg anything that matches up to the bag's blind stamp or indeed what the bag is. So in fact, you can use the same certificate for any alligator bag....

I have one porous birkin that does not have a cites, and niloticus one that do, I just photocopy the nilo one and keep it with my poro in case I need to travel with the birkin.

I would not advise anyone travelling out of the US with an alligator bag without a CITES. They are extra strict.

I have bought my Hermes exotics (croc, lizard and ostrich) from either the Europe or South America boutiques. All came automatically with CITES and were free.

I always keep a photocopy of the CITES in every bag as I have been asked to produce this, when traveling. In Sydney, the officer knew exactly what the CITES document was and quickly & simply waved me through when I presented this.

My friend, who owns both vintage (never came w/ CITES) and new exotic H bags simply does what EdinaChu suggested - photocopies her "new" CITES docu and keeps an extra copy in her vintage exotics.

Wouldnt a photocopy of a CITES rather defeat its original purpose? I honestly would have expected a Customs agent would want to see original documents, but I guess they are too busy.

LIBRADIAMONDS: may I know how long did you need to wait for getting the CITES cert in Tokyo? TIA :smile1:

If the CITES is a photocopy document then it's really cheeky for them to try to make you pay extra for it! :thinkin:

All the cites certificates l've received are photocopies. I agree if you have to pay for this it's really cheeky. I was told by an SA recently that you now have to request a cites, you don't automatically get them and they ask where you are travelling to. Not sure if that means they are destination specific but it does seem a strange setup to me.

If you purchase from FSH, the detaxe / VAT refund form now incorporates the CITES information, thus a separate CITES certificate is no longer necessary, just carry your carbon copy of the detaxe form

it's under section B, along with the description of the item (^(oo)^)v

My exotic bags were all purchased from the H boutique. Each bag came with the original cites document (with raised seal) except one bag which came with a copy. I didn't inquire about where the original was, if they were holding it for me, etc. It never occurred to me to ask. They were all included for no charge. I don't know if you can get a replacement if you lose it or get a bag (such as through a reseller) without one.

I do keep each cites cert in each of my bags, but I don't plan on traveling with them overseas (too stressful). Maybe I should leave the cites cert home in a safe place?

they are destination specific. each country has its own regulations & exemptions based on the standard CITES Appendices I, II and III. For the USA, a traveler carrying up to 4 items for noncommercial/personal use only is exempt from CITES certificate requirements, although I do carry mine just to be on the safe side. For those who don't have one, perhaps it might be helpful to print out the relevant portion of the federal regulations discussing the 4-item exemption?
