CITES, travel and exotics

That would be weird, since porosus crocodiles are not native to North America, they only have the American crocodile and caimans, I believe. I'm looking at a porosus CITES and it says Australia. Maybe you're thinking of the alligator farms?
But, you should figure this one out with your local authorities :shrugs:
Thank you. Yes I'm in contact with them and waiting for a reply.

Thank you for all your advise. This is interesting but at the same time slightly frustrating as I purchased mine directly from the Paris boutique when I travelled there and my SA confirmed with another SA whether a CITES is required and they both said no. So I returned to my home country without a certificate being issued  I am not too sure what to do as I did not purchase it from my home store.

@papertiger Also, I didn’t know that all kinds of pieces with some exotic leather needs CITES. I actually bought a watch from my local VCA boutique last year in which the straps are croc leather straps but I didn’t get any CITES to go with them at all :O
Hi,

Sorry for digging up an old post!

I am currently in the same situation where I have purchased a Rodeo and a Pegasus from Canada boutique in 2023, both charms have a touch of exotic (lizard) on the saddle and the wings.

The Rodeo came with a sticker on the box (listing product, species name, CITES Appendix II, country of origin, export permit number, date of issue), but no physical CITES certificate.

The Pegasus had nothing on the box and no CITES certificate.

I also have a Hermes watch with matt alligator strap, which also didn't come with CITES certificate.

Wondering if Canada stores don't include CITES for non-bag exotic items? or should I contact the store or Hermes corporate to obtain relevant CITES certificate? All items were purchased in 2023.

Thank you in advance!

I understand your concern and have a similar situation with a watch strap, custom made, by a French atelier but purchased in UK whilst we were still in EU.
I did question it retrospectively and never got a reply.

If I were you, I would contact Hermes directly and make sure you speak to someone who appears to understand your concern.
Perhaps a small amount of skin such as used on a Rodeo is covered by a global permit. However it doesn't take away that even that needs to come from a legitimate source.
You can easily see that a genuine Hermes product could be covered like that, whereas a fake could use materials sourced anywhere.

We also need to be careful in our terminology
CITES is the name of the organisation.
We tend to used the acronym with the understanding that a word like certification or authorisation follows.
Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora

With due respect to everyone who contributes here, I would urge caution with regard to all opinions expressed on issues such as this posted on a public forum. You have no way of knowing the route by which that knowledge was gained and that is why it is important go back to a primary source dealing directly with the legislation.
I would hope that any professional experts would understand, share my caution and not be offended.

Thank you! I will contact my store, hoping to sort it out, as it worries me now I know the items should have came with certification paperwork.

Has anyone traveled with a croc or ostrich bag to Japan? The customs info online is confusing.
Just to shared, i m planning to bring my croc bag to japan in December and my store in local country didn't provide me wif any Cities...according to my local SA i just need to have a copy of my receipt should be fine. They dont issue cities certs to local clients. I even email METI but answer was unclear. If i do bring, i will put it in my hand luggage but not carrying it when i clear immigration to prevent any questions. Hope this helps.

Hi guys. I bought a lizard 90’s dior bag from a reseller. It didn’t come with a cites. Now the bag was delivered from Japan to the US. Idk how I assumed it would have cites if it’s being delivered from there.

Thing is I’ve moved to dubai and wondering if it’s gonna be a problem taking it with me? Anyone have any idea bc I asked an SA at dior and she had no idea
