There is only one original of a CITES and it is held by the importer of the hide. Therefore CITES from stores are almost always a copy.
I would assume so - as Ive only received cites directly from the H boutique, in both cases, both were copies - not original. i could tell because there was a decent amount of handwritten notes throughout, and it was clearly re printed from a scanner/copier machine of some sort.
Thank you so much for reply. I’m so lost in it. I didn’t even know I need anything. If you already have possession of the bag in the UK
it would have passed through customs and import controls
as long as you do not want to travel abroad with it
I don't think you have anything to worry about
CITES for it needs to have been issued by the manufacturer or vendor to certify that it was not made from an endangered animal - it is not something the UK Government would issue retrospectively.
Contact Dubai authoritiesThank you so much for reply. I’m so lost in it. I didn’t even know I need anything.
We would like to move to Dubai next year and I would like to take it so I guess I need those cites. Do you know what to do then? Ask Dubai or UK or Chanel? It’s a problem now![]()
Thank you. I will. That’s helpful.Contact Dubai authorities
explain your situation
ask what the requirements will be
then find out how to deal with it
Hello,
I'm a US resident and want to purchase a croc bag in France. The major auction house is refusing to give a CITES and told me (assured me and insisted but not willing to guarantee) that I will have no issue to bring the item to the US as it's a personal item.
I read the eCFR linked previously and I am not sure I understand completely. For a crocodile is it a must to have CITES when traveling?
They told me they sell many vintage bags from Hermes and with the H name and their auction house name (invoice and receipt), I will have no issue. The vintage year could be proven with the receipt from the auction house and date code on the bag
If I'm reading that eCFR correctly, this violates personal effects d part 2 where porosus is an Article I item?
Thank you for the help
Yes I have contacted them and received another number to contact late at night so will try Monday. My question is more about understanding the eCFR personal use regulations.Seriously. . .
You must contact your local authority and explain your situation exactly to it.
If the response is that there will be no problem, ensure that you do have that in writing.
The experience of tPF members can be a helpful guide, but the advice you choose to rely on might not match your situation in a significant way and that might mean your experience will be different.

The crocodilians used by Hermès are Appendix II species. To bring them into the US is not an issue as long as they are personal effects and you are not bringing in multiples. The regulations on this are linked multiple times in this thread.Hello,

Ok thank you! I read the appendix incorrectly then. I've been trying to read through the thread but it's taking me some time 😊The crocodilians used by Hermès are Appendix II species. Go here - the personal effects clause is quite clear - and then of course you should contact the authorities and get a clear and final answer, something for which government agencies are well known.Ok thank you! If I am concerned about the personal effects exemption when traveling into the US, I carry a copy of the exemption terms on my phone. One cannot assume CBP officers will all have a full grasp of the regulations. Personally I am way more concerned about other countries than I am about the US.
I thought Hermes had a farm in Florida? Wouldn't that make the porosus appendix I?The crocodilians used by Hermès are Appendix II species. That would be weird, since porosus crocodiles are not native to North America, they only have the American crocodile and caimans, I believe. I'm looking at a porosus CITES and it says Australia. Maybe you're thinking of the alligator farms?I thought Hermes had a farm in Florida? Wouldn't that make the porosus appendix I?
