I'm not just aiming this at you personally. I don't mean to say that anyone here has to support every decision he makes, that's not the point. You said you love Charlie, I don't know what that means, I hope it means that while you admire him as a actor you also care about him as a person. You don't want him to hurt his career and that's good, but since he has already accepted it, put yourself in his shoes. If you were Charlie what would you appreciate more - A fan thread that posts glorious pics of him walking down the street but is full of doom and gloom regarding a recent and very crucial part he's accepted? Or would you feel more appreciative of your fans throwing moral support your way and having enough respect for you not to assume you had to be - coerced, drunk, or desperate in order to take the role. All thing I've seen suggested here.

Just a thought. I do realize that some of you may not care at all that you may be doing more harm than good with so much negativity at a time when he could use support, because those that have never heard of the guy have been downright ugly about it. From his 'fans' I would think an attitude of 'I got your back, bro!' even if you don't agree with his decision, would be really welcome right now.

I highly doubt that Charlie cares what people think about this decision (certainly not on message boards lol.) He's a grown man he's going to do what he wants to do. Of course people who don't know him are gong to take issue. That's what happens when you bring in an actor who is not a huge star. They cry and moan and complain, and whine and when the film comes out they will be slobbering all over him. And as you said, millions of women are gaga over this story and it will probably do fine :P I will stand by my boy when it comes to this project. I don't gotta like it, but I will smack a girl if they say that he's not hot enough to play the role. Please!

I know that Dakota is hurting over it but she's young. She says she and Charlie have 'bonded' over getting hit with so much negativity. She's ready to prove everyone wrong and good for her!

Your last line makes me laugh and since I did like the books, this little cartoon makes me  and pretty much sums up how it went on my part -

The only thing I'm worried about for Charlie is his Geordie/LA/Aussie/WTF accent he's got going on. No matter how good his performances are, someone always has to bring it up. He can't seem to nail it down all 100%

^^ The accent is really bad, I can't watch him most of the time because of it. It's worse than Heath Ledger's accent was.

It's such a weird mangled hybrid that I think he might be tone deaf... or something.

I seriously feel like Charlie's politician wife who still stands by him after a scandal happens. I'm embarrassed, I don't like it, but I'll still support him (no matter how God awful that decision may be. And the books are God awful.) As a fan of his I just never pictured him taking a role like this. Maybe, he found some artistic merit to it, I don't know. I just want to sit him down with a cup of coffee and just see where his heads at. Maybe, he thinks this will be a stepping stone to get his other projects off the ground, like VLAD.

And more power to Morgana. Personally, Charlie seems pretty devoted to her, but still...

I totally get what you mean. It's like with football. No matter how often your team loses you still stand by them. It's the same here. You hope for better times and better games.

Agreed, Charlie could care less what some strangers on gossip forums say about him. And I'm sorry if some are "offended" by the not so hippie happy attitude we're sporting. It's called being realistic and not following blindly. Some opinions on here won't be all lovey-dovey. Sorry.

I think him and Morgana will be fine. He's indeed very devoted and once said it's one of his few good qualities that he knows how to treat ladies meaning not cheating on them. The other thing is he's 33 dating a woman his age. What does he want with a 23 year old?

Why so much hate when the movie hasn't come out yet? Let it come out then hate all you want if he doesn't live up to the hype.

It's not about the movie, it's about the source material. How much better can the movie get if the source material is already sh*tty? Have you ever experienced an adaptation being better than the original books? Especially this summer lots of those franchises that have been adapted from books bombed at the box office. People are tired and done of these kind of franchises. Do they think just because it's a different topic they suddenly will succeed? Hollywood needs to get original again.

Why does it feel like we're always having the conversation about having to be fans on these threads? There are fan sites which do nothing but blindly bleed love, but tPF is a gossip and news forum, which will invite opinion and sometimes debate. At least most people posting have seen his work in depth and can have a view rather than a drive-by. I'm glad he owns his decision to be in it, but only time will tell.

And double agree on his accent.

I wonder if he gets hazing from other cast members. LOL

Offended, no. Surprised at all the doomsday dramatics, yes.

Exactly, it hasn't even begun filming so it's not 'realistic' to trash it already.

Personally I enjoyed The Hunger Games, The Notebook and The Great Gatsby more so than the original books. On the kinky side, 9 1/2 Weeks was 91/2 million times better than the book.

But you are right in that books to movie have a tough time pleasing the audience because there is no way to capture everything people loved about the books on film. Usually the books are better. Readers that loved Fifty really enjoyed the email interactions between Christian and Ana, as well as her inner voice that either cheered her on or tried to bring her down to reality. That will be hard to translate to film.

I realize in your case you would like the movie not to be so much like the books but I suspect that disappointment in the movie will come more from what it does not capture from the books or what it changes.

The only thing I'm worried about for Charlie is his Geordie/LA/Aussie/WTF accent he's got going on. No matter how good his performances are, someone always has to bring it up. He can't seem to nail it down all 100%

I agree with you here and Christian sounds very formal. As I'm doing a reread I am reminded that he also sounds very British (in speech mannerisms, slang) which would be great for Charlie except ..he's not supposed to be a brit. Actually Ana and Christian both sound very British in the books, E.L. James should have just given them that background.

Side note - if you're here just to gossip about Charlie or just look at pictures of him I can see that this would be a tougher audience. If you're actually a fan of the guy, the man as well as the acting, trying to dump all over his decision and the movie before it's even started filming is a strange way to show it. I might not approve of something but if it was a friend or someone I cared about, I wouldn't trash it at every turn either.

ETA: I find it hard to believe that even Charlie can be unaffeted by having it plastered all over the news that 65,000 fans have signed a position to have him replaced by Matt Bomer.

I love Charlie, and can't wait for the new season of SOA. I was disapointed in his choice to do the movie, but no one is asking me for my opinion. Michael K at Dlisted summarizes my feelings of SOG:

“Chemistry” Is The Reason Why Charlie Hunnam Is Doing That Fifty Shades Of Grey Mess

September 8, 2013 / Posted by: Michael K 6

At the season 6 premiere screening of Sons of Anarchy in Hollywood last night, Charlie Hunnam told The Hollywood Reporter that when he was first approached to play Christian Grey in Fifty Shades of Mom Jizz, he wasn’t sure he wanted to get locked into a franchise. But then when he got in a room with Dakota Johnson to do a screen test with her, the chemistry between their asses convinced him to sign the contract.

“As soon as we got in the room and started reading with Dakota, I knew that I definitely wanted to do it, because there was a tangible chemistry between us. It felt kind of exciting and fun and weird and compelling, and so that was it.”

Uh huh. ***** needs to tell the truth. More like the chemistry with Charlie and the check they waved at him was so powerful that he knew he had to do it.

Charlie also told reporters that he’s not scared or shy about doing a f*ck scene, because he was in Queer as Folk, so he’s done a whole lot of f*ck scenes.

“My first job was on a Channel 4 miniseries called Queer as Folk. [There were] incredibly explicit sexual scenes with a man. I mean, I’m 16- and 17-years wiser now. So if I could do it when I was 18 with a guy, I can certainly do it at 33 with a lady.”

And then Charlie admitted what NOBODY, even a ho who’s going to be in the movie, should admit:

“I went and read the first book to get a clearer idea of who this character was and felt even more excited about the prospect of bringing him to life.”

They must’ve injected liquid money into his veins and that check must have a whole lot of zeros in it, because Charlie has gone crazy. First he says that “chemistry” is what made him sign on and then he says that reading the book made him feel excited about being in the movie. If Charlie really did read the book, he’d wonder why they were’t asking Jonah Hill or Seth Rogen to be Christian Grey since it’s obviously a comedy. Charlie is seriously trying to feed us a tampon full of bull****. He should’ve just said that he didn’t read the book, but he did read every number on the check they gave him. And seriously, a movie that will have Charlie Hunnam’s bouncing a*s in it can’t be that awful of a movie. (Hint to the director of Fifty Shades: Just show 90 minutes of Charlie Hunnam’s a*s in motion.)

Here’s Charlie with Katey Sagal and the rest of the cast of Sons of Anarchy last night:

Many Shades of Grey fans are probably not able to see him as Christian because of his recent look, no so clean cut, unshaven, and accent. I'm pretty sure that many of the fans only know him as the role he plays in Sons of Anarchy since he's not a very famous actor. The difference between a good actor vs. a great actor is able to play different characters that no one can see them play and transform himself into that character so convincingly that no one else could imagine another actor to fill his shoes. I do believe that Charlie is one of a great actor who will be able to turn all the doubters into obsess fans! He'll be like Rob Pattinson....remember when everyone hated him when he was first cast as Edward Cullen? Everyone hated him and couldn't see him as Edward and said he was totally wrong for the part. Well, if he was able to prove them all wrong, Charlie can, too. TEAM CHARLIE!!! ;)

I thought the article makes an interesting point about the tolerance audiences have for onscreen sex scenes.

How much sex will be in 'Fifty Shades of Grey' movie?

How much sex in 'Fifty Shades of Grey' and other burning questions.

After the bombshell casting announcement for Fifty Shades of Grey -- the furor still burns one week later -- other key questions about the upcoming film fire up speculation.

How much sex will be portrayed on the big screen?

E. L. James' erotic best seller is filled with vivid scenes of kinky sex between S&M-loving Christian Grey (to be portrayed by Charlie Hunnam) and Anastasia Steele (Dakota Johnson). But finding the right balance onscreen is going to be a key task for director Sam Taylor-Johnson.

"She is going to have to walk a very fine line," says Melissa Silverstein, editor of the Women and Hollywood blog on indiewire.com. "That's the $1,000 question. Are they going to push things to a different level?"

The filmmakers have already made clear that the adaptation will remain an R-rated (restricted) movie and they will not push the sexual content to an NC-17 rating by the Motion Picture Association of America.

"Historically, the NC-17 rating has dramatically impacted box office. It's the kiss of death in most cases," says Kirby Dick, director of This Film Is Not Yet Rated, a 2006 documentary about the MPAA rating system.

This is not to say that filmmakers won't shoot steamier scenes for an unrated version, perhaps for DVD or special release, and then edit the main film for the needed R rating.

Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke says the filmmakers might not want to go too far. Hardwicke is working on the sexually charged thriller Plush, due out in October. She originally intended on portraying explicit sex onscreen.

But focus group members who saw the early film cuts were uncomfortable watching the scenes on the big screen in a public setting.

"People were surprised to see something so sexual," says Hardwicke. "I thought after the success of (the novel) Fifty Shades of Grey that people would be totally excited to see it. But it was too intense. It's a whole different feeling on the screen."

Hardwicke said she made slight modifications to her movie and it was a lesson learned.

"In the end, people are still uptight and nervous about sexuality in movies," she says.

What's the film's timetable?

The Aug.1, 2014, release date gives the filmmakers a strict, but "manageable," timetable to shoot and edit the film, says Erik Davis, contributing editor of the movie ticket website Fandango.com. With production beginning in the autumn, he expects a key Fifty Shades of Grey teaser trailer to be shown in the winter.

"That first look will be everything," says Davis. "It will show the world just how much chemistry these actors have together. That trailer will prove whether there will be a Fifty Shades of Grey franchise."

Hunnam said Saturday that during Fifty Shades of Grey auditions he had "tangible chemistry" with Johnson.

"It felt kind of exciting and fun and weird and compelling, and so that was it," he toldThe Hollywood Reporter.

What about the casting?

There's still another hot couple yet to be announced -- Anastasia Steele's best friend, Kate Kavanagh, and Elliot Grey, Christian's studly brother. The two have their own steamy relationship in the novel after meeting in a bar. There's also Steele's platonic boyfriend, Jose Rodriguez.

The filmmakers have signaled that decisions and announcements of these actors will be expedited after the main stars were announced last week.

"They are important roles," says Davis. "But the big announcement is done. Let's just say people won't be starting petitions about these casting decisions."

Will the casting furor die?

An online petition on Change.org calling for fan-favorites Matt Bomer and Alexis Bledel to be placed in the lead roles has about 66,000 signatures. But Hardwicke just laughs about the fuss, remembering how Twilight fans reacted to Robert Pattinson when she cast him as the lead vampire.

"They freaked out then, and look how that turned out," says Hardwicke. "This too shall pass."

Silverstein believes the filmmakers don't mind that people are debating or even decrying the movie.

"They love that everyone is talking about this movie that hasn't even started filming yet," she says. "They have another year to keep this conversation going."
