Fifty Shades of Grey's leading man,
Charlie Hunnam, was at the season 6 premier party for his hit cable series,
Sons of Anarchy, over the weekend and took the opportunity to chat about his latest role as kinky CEO Christian Grey. Charlie was all smiles and didn't seem to be fazed by all the criticism he's received since the big casting announcement was made.
All smiles, the hunky Brit spoke with
E! News during the premier party and they didn't waste any time asking him how he feels about shooting so many scenes that require nudity, S&M and sex.
I spent a lifetime preparing myself for that.
Wow... jaw meet floor! Charlie couldn't contain his excitement about nabbing the much talked about role and assured Fifty Shades fans that he will do justice to the task of bringing the character of Christian Grey to life.
It's incredibly exciting. He's a very complex and fascinating character and I just feel really excited and delighted to be entrusted with the job of bringing him to life and its a big responsibility. He's a beloved character and millions and millions of people I think 75 million copies of this book or something have been sold so he's obviously a very well loved character and its a big responsibility to take it on but I didn't do it lightly. I did a lot of research and I did a lot of thinking about it and feel confident that I have a way to bring him to life that will be fun and exciting and honest.
On
Sons of Anarchy, Charlie plays sexy biker Jax Teller, a character who's conflicted and tormented in his own way, and much like Grey has power and zero problems with the ladies. As far as nudity and sex go, we've seen bits and pieces of his sculpted bod on the show which Charlie insists is, "just part of the job." That's the spirit!
Though in all seriousness, Charlie did elaborate on another great aspect of his craft.
It's what's so exciting about this job as an actor is you go out and get to experience things that you normally wouldn't have an opportunity to experience. I never thought I was going to be rolling around with motorcycle clubs and riding a Harley and feeling this level of brotherhood like I was part of a motorcycle club. I never thought I'd be engaging in S&M either, but that's kind of part of the wonderful journey of being an actor is you get to experience these things.
Charlie also chatted up
The Hollywood Reporter and talked about the chemistry him and co-star
Dakota Johnson had during their first read.
As soon as we got in the room and started reading with Dakota, I knew that I definitely wanted to do it, because there was a tangible chemistry between us. It felt kind of exciting and fun and weird and compelling, and so that was it.
Prior to that sizzling reading, Charlie said he spoke at length with director
Sam Taylor-Johnson about her thoughts on the role. After their first meeting, he "felt really intrigued and excited about it."
I went and read the first book to get a clearer idea of who this character was and felt even more excited about the prospect of bringing him to life.
After reading the book, Charlie was confident that he wouldn't have any trouble bring the racy story to the big screen.
My first job was on a Channel 4 miniseries called Queer as Folk. [There were] incredibly explicit sexual scenes with a man. I mean, I'm 16 and 17 years wiser now. So if I could do it when I was 18 with a guy, I can certainly do it at 33 with a lady.
Well that's good to know! It sounds as though Charlie is really pumped to take on this role and he certainly has the acting chops and looks to pull it off. I know that there has been a lot of backlash about the casting of the two leads (which is completely unwarranted and downright mean at times), but I'm confident that Team Fifty picked Charlie and Dakota for a reason and we have to trust them. I have a strong feeling that when we see these two actors in character and the cameras roll, that everyone will be blown away by their performances.
