Charlie Hunnam talks sexual chemistry and being cast as the lead in 'Fifty Shades of Grey.'

Hunnam spoke publicly for the first time since being cast in "Fifty Shades of Grey"
Hunnam said he had "tangible chemistry" with his co-star Dakota Johnson

The most-discussed actor in Hollywood has spoken out at last.

Charlie Hunnam, who has found himself in the center of the white-hot, Hollywood universe, spoke publicly for the first time since he was cast as Christian Grey in Fifty Shades of Grey.

Hunnam talked to reporters at the FX Sons of Anarchy red carpet on Saturday and addressed the question on every fan's mind.

He said that during Fifty Shades of Grey auditions he had "tangible chemistry" with his future co-star Dakota Johnson, who will play Anastasia Steele in the movie.

"As soon as we got in the room and started reading with Dakota, I knew that I definitely wanted to do it, because there was a tangible chemistry between us," Hunnam told The Hollywood Reporter. "It felt kind of exciting and fun and weird and compelling, and so that was it."

Hunnam also talked about how his girlfriend, jewelry designer Morgana McNelis, would handle watching him in the steamy scenes with Johnson.

"It's very hard to be with an actor," Hunnam said. "She's required to share parts of me that she wouldn't really want to share. With the nature of this role, that's going to be times 10."

But Hunnam added that his girlfriend "loved the books."

"She read them and loved them and was really excited about the potential of the opportunity for me," said Hunnam. "If anything, I think it will make us closer."

Charlie Hunnam on 'Fifty Shades' Co-Star: There's 'Tangible Chemistry Between Us'

And don't expect the actor – who had explicit gay sex scenes in "Queer as Folk" – to balk at the racy material: "If I could do it when I was 18 with a guy, I can certainly do it at 33 with a lady."

During the season 6 premiere of his FX hit, Sons of Anarchy, Hunnam opened up about his Fifty Shades of Grey co-star Dakota Johnson and how he landed the role of Christian Grey.

"As soon as we got in the room and started reading with Dakota, I knew that I definitely wanted to do it, because there was a tangible chemistry between us," Hunnam told The Hollywood Reporter and handful of reporters. "It felt kind of exciting and fun and weird and compelling, and so that was it."

Before that electrifying reading, Hunnam spoke at length with director Sam Taylor-Johnson about her thoughts on the role. After their first meeting, he "felt really intrigued and excited about it."

"I went and read the first book to get a clearer idea of who this character was, and felt even more excited about the prospect of bringing him to life."

But at first he was cautious about taking on the commitment, given that he's been locked into a TV show since 2008. After more talks with Taylor-Johnson, the filmmakers pushing back the shooting schedule to give Hunnam more time to prepare, and the reading with his future co-star, the actor committed.

Does he have worries about portraying such racy material onscreen?

"My first job was on a Channel 4 miniseries called Queer as Folk. It was incredibly explicit sexual scenes with a man," Hunnam said. "I mean I'm 16 and 17 years wiser now. So if I could do it when I was 18 with a guy, I can certainly do it at 33 with a lady."

He also said his girlfriend, jewelry designer Morgana McNelis, helped him make the decision to take on the role.

"It's very hard to be with an actor, Hunamm said. "She's required to share parts of me that she wouldn't really want to share. With the nature of this role, that's going to be times 10."

He added that McNelis "loved the books."

"She read them and loved them and was really excited about the potential of the opportunity for me. If anything, I think it will make us closer. "

Fifty Shades of Grey, adapted from the EL James novel, will be released by Focus Features on Aug. 1, 2014 in North America.

You know I was going to post something along the lines of - who knows, maybe his girlfriend liked the books. Ha! :D I've been doing a reread with him in mind for Christian and I have to say it's been quite nice. :graucho:

As far bringing them close together, good luck with that Charlie, I hope it works out that way and it doesn't turn into another case of co-stars hooking up and previous relationships getting left behind. Since they've been together 6 years already they stand a good chance.

I seriously feel like Charlie's politician wife who still stands by him after a scandal happens. I'm embarrassed, I don't like it, but I'll still support him (no matter how God awful that decision may be. And the books are God awful.) As a fan of his I just never pictured him taking a role like this. Maybe, he found some artistic merit to it, I don't know. I just want to sit him down with a cup of coffee and just see where his heads at. Maybe, he thinks this will be a stepping stone to get his other projects off the ground, like VLAD.

And more power to Morgana. Personally, Charlie seems pretty devoted to her, but still...

I know right... I imagine a countdown clock somewhere has begun ticking down.

I suspect his agent did the hard sell, perhaps he pitched it as the "Thelma and Louise" moment in his career... or whatever... if deadline.com comments are anything to go by his agent (if he still has the same one he had 4 years ago) is kind of a harda**.

A quote from the You Tube interview "This guy as he exists in the film is such an incredible role."

Here's a thought, maybe it's as simple as that. Maybe just try to entertain the thought that while you personally may have felt it an unworthy role (the books are trash, whatever ) , he finds it to be an exciting and challenging project. He liked the chemistry with his co-star, the timing was right, his girlfriend loved the books (as did millions of women around the world) and he's up for it. No pun intended. :p

Good grief, all the dramatics! I would think that anyone that really enjoys Charlie as an actor and what they know of him as a person would want to see him do well in the role, have the movie itself do well and give it a shot. If not you know, with 'fans' like this who needs enemies. :nogood:

Being a fan of an actor doesn't me you have to like the career decisions they make. I love Charlie and I can name several films that he's done that I thought were awful. I know he's talented, and out of the list of grade B, CW actors that were brought up to play this role, he is the best choice. That being said I am definitely leary and it's going to have to impress the heck out of me (because that book....:nogood:)

I'm not just aiming this at you personally. I don't mean to say that anyone here has to support every decision he makes, that's not the point. You said you love Charlie, I don't know what that means, I hope it means that while you admire him as a actor you also care about him as a person. You don't want him to hurt his career and that's good, but since he has already accepted it, put yourself in his shoes. If you were Charlie what would you appreciate more - A fan thread that posts glorious pics of him walking down the street but is full of doom and gloom regarding a recent and very crucial part he's accepted? Or would you feel more appreciative of your fans throwing moral support your way and having enough respect for you not to assume you had to be - coerced, drunk, or desperate in order to take the role. All thing I've seen suggested here.

Just a thought. I do realize that some of you may not care at all that you may be doing more harm than good with so much negativity at a time when he could use support, because those that have never heard of the guy have been downright ugly about it. From his 'fans' I would think an attitude of 'I got your back, bro!' even if you don't agree with his decision, would be really welcome right now.
