Tom Hiddleston will be replacing Benedict Cumberbatch in Crimson Peak. YES!!!

Tom Hiddleston is replacing Benedict Cumberbatch in Crimson Peak, a haunted house thriller directed by Guillermo Del Toro.

The film, which will also feature Jessica Chastain, Mia Wasikowska and Charlie Hunnam, is set to begin shooting in January 2014. The picture will be produced by Legendary, which is financing the film along with Universal Pictures.
Cumberbatch exited Crimson Peak in late August, with no reason for the departure given at the time.
Hiddleston, who played Loki in The Avengers, is also set to appear in this November's Thor sequel to reprise the role.

Is this the girlfriend who's the Jewellery designer?

I don't think it was lack of options. He's going to shoot another movie with del Torro which includes Jessica Chastain (no Benedict anymore) and he said before he rather turns down roles if not interested than just to do them for the sake of working. So I'm really curious how they pitched that to him so he took it. Either they turned the books into Oscar-worthy material or he wasn't completely sober while negotiating all this.

Yeah he says that when SOA is still running, but that show is coming to an end and there are the basic economics of Hollywood to consider.

I just don't think Hunnam is a good enough actor (at this stage) not to consider the role, regardless of the artistic merit of this project it's guaranteed to net the leads huge exposure which buys them career currency and thereby choices. Even if you're pursuing a career based on artistic integrity I doubt it would have been that difficult to convince someone in his position to do the role.

I can't stand the book and it'll take a lot of convincing for me watch the film but I have a sneaking suspicion this movie might turn out better than people think... which admittedly doesn't say much.

No, he said that even before he was on SoA. After Green Street and before landing SoA he didn't work for almost 2 years because they only offered him crap. So he turned to screenwriting. He said he lived very low budget only eating beans out of cans and stuff. It's not like he's desperate. Pacific Rim was a mild success which led to new opportunities with del Torro. I don't know what made him change his mind because until recently he said stuff like this:

“I want to work with sensible people who are looking to make serious films with integrity, and who are looking to make great quality movies. The movie industry is just in a horrific state at the moment and I don’t want to be involved in making disposable sh*t.”

 I knew you'd correct me.

My main point was that he's an average actor (I'm sorry but he's been bad in a lot of stuff) who doesn't enjoy unlimited options. He's enjoyed mild success that can be mostly attributed to his looks, if he's going to make a go at a more high profile career his options will only diminish as he ages. Because of that I don't think people can judge the decision too harshly.

I don't judge anything. I have an opinion about it which ultimately will influence my decision to not see this movie. Period.

I think he's an excellent actor, but then I've only seen him in the past few years as Jax in Sons of Anarchy, 3,2,1 Frankie (he was fine, film was bad) and Queer as Folk. He's brilliant as Jax, that role was made for him. But I also like that he can play a variety of characters. I've not seen Green Street or The Ledge, but I have The Ledge sitting here from Netflix waiting to be watched.

He said in an interview that he had tried out for parts in which he was told he was very good and they would like to use him but they had to go with a bigger name to draw an audience, you could tell it was frustrating for him. No one can speak for him but him, but I do think that may have something to do with his decision to take the role. It will be interesting to see how he addresses the question in interviews, you know he's going to get asked what made him decide to take the role. Though given that his break-out role was in Queer as Folk, I really don't think anyone should be that surprised this was something he was willing to do.
