The books were painful to read. Writing was soooooo bad. But the director is someone I'm excited about and this guy isn't the Christian I was thinking of in my head, but maybe it'll work. I'll be seeing it for sure now. :D

I like that the director is a woman. Hopefully she can do something with the plot that isn't as painful as the books were.

I saw that the two leads were picked based on their chemistry with each other, and that no others actors had nearly the chemistry that these two did. I'm personally glad they went with actor's chops & chemistry over a certain "look."

This!! I've made no secret that I'm over the moon with the casting of Charlie as Christian, he's gorgeous and so talented. No, he's not the image of Christian I had in mind while reading the books (Matt and Ian fit there) but he's going to do an awesome job. I'd much rather them go with chemistry than to cast just because someone has the 'look'. I love looking at Ian, he is gorgeous, but I don't think he's one of the best actors I've come across. To me Charlie has both, looks and talent.

I love Charlie on SoA. I'm shocked he took this role. I've never read the book so I'm very curious what the pitch was to get him to do this. In every interview he's given since the success of SoA he seems like the type of actor who would never do this film if it's as crappy as some people say it is. So now I'm morbidly curious what attracted him to it. I'm thinking the director and her vision is what convinced him. Shall be interesting. It's a huge risk for him so I hope it pays off.

Lol @ people thinking he's ugly. He doesn't photograph well. He's much better in motion. Sex and swag all the way. He can definitely be sexy, dangerous or charming.

Well it hasn't even been filmed yet so no one knows yet if it's 'crappy', it would be interesting to see what the script looks like. I feel like they'll have cleaned up the dialog, though I found the book very entertaining and at it's heart Fifty is a love story. 'A love story with kink.' as the author puts it. I've heard that the film's focus will be the love story.

As much as people love to hate the books, they've been wildly successful so anyone attached to the film would have overnight notoriety. I've heard Charlie say in interviews that he's tried out for parts and the directors told him he was excellent but they just couldn't take a risk, they needed a bigger name. Perhaps that's part of his motivation, I'm just guessing here. Overnight everyone now knows who he is.

I hope the film goes well, because I like Charlie so much I feel like there's a little more on the line that it turns out good. If it were an actor I didn't care one way or the other about it wouldn't matter as much.

Charlie obviously isn't afraid of taking risks or filming scenes of a sexual nature, he started out his career acting as a gay male in Queer as Folk and man there were some highly explicit m/m sex scenes.

ETA: I posted the article in the movie thread but I'll just link it here, apparently before Charlie wouldn't sign until he was sure of who his co-star would be.

Just adding in a pic here that is new to me! An oldie but goodie, GQ 2003. :smile1: *love the long legs!*

EL James is very involved in this film, even if she isn't the writer. She announced casting and she's tight with the producers. The film will have the stamp of the books all over it.

When they're done, I just want them to release the blooper real of them trying to get through their lines.

To me, at best, it's going to be as low-level as Two Moon Junction. And as to how many actors were mentioned for the part - this happens a lot - where bigger names are mentioned as being attached or interested in industry circles just to give the film some PR. Most of those actors weren't even approached or turned it down flat - and not because of the nudity - because the books are steaming piles of literary crap.

The so-called frontrunners, Ian Somerhalder and Matt Bomer were never even in the running.

Considering how well the books have sold I think that's ok, that's the point, readers that enjoyed the books want the 'stamp' of the books as you phrase it. They're going to be very disappointed if it doesn't come through.

Ian openly campaigned for the role, I don't know what happened there, maybe we'll never know. He posted about it on Twitter constantly even so far as to auction off an autographed copy of Fifty Shades with his notes in the margins. I don't think Matt Bomer was ever truly interested, readers just wanted him because he looks the part of Christian. You can put down the books as 'literary crap' all you want but it doesn't change the fact that readers all over the world loved them, they stayed on the best seller list for a record amount of time. All the insults in the world hurled at the books are a moot point, they kicked a$$ in sales. They were read for fun, no one was reading them looking for a literary masterpiece.

You can insist on being negative but why not try an open mind instead? You could be pleasantly surprised. :smile1:

Sorry, I have to jump on this one as well, because it grinds me when anyone says we cant have a view on the books because they "sold". Yes, the books sold - they were a direct rip off of an already successful and middling writing effort, Twilight. Sales doesn't have much to do with quality - they were the beneficiaries of someone else's original idea which had a built-in fan base. I can't and won't defend them, and I read them too - all of them. But, I wasn't expecting much, so it didn't disappoint me as much as others who expected real dialogue.

That being said - maybe, just maybe the director can find an angle on this, and I'm sure actors like Charlie who are good and versatile can find it, but with all due respect, it's my or anyone's right to say the books were, at best downright silly but harmless and, at worst, pretty insulting to the notion that women all want to be saved by some rich hunky Dom. But that's what the boards are for - opinion. I hope Charlie doesn't get train wrecked by a trio of blech, because he deserves better.

Well of course you are entitled to an opinion on the books, especially if you've actually read them. I would never suggest otherwise and I didn't say otherwise. My point is, that while these may be the books that people love to hate, what some may consider 'literary crap', there are millions of readers out there that enjoyed them. People want the stamp of E.L. James story in the movie, of course. They want to capture what they found and enjoyed there.

I think if you have your mind made up to be negative about the books, the casting, the film, whatever there is probably not much anyone can do to change your mind. But why not just consider an open mind instead? The movie hasn't even been made yet so there's nothing yet to judge. Give it a try before you bash it, you just might be surprised.

I'm not insisting on being negative. Don't pigeon hole me with your generalisations, thanks very much. I don't mind literary smut - as long as it's good well-written smut. Charlie is a good actor, I love him in SoA, but his decision to take this role befuddles me.

I don't know who said it first but I agree with this quote about Fifty : "It offends me as a reader, and a pervert". :supacool:

And my signature tag line has never been more applicable than here.

Well I hope you find yourself pleasantly surprised, if you have any intention of giving it a try that is. I would watch it no matter who played the parts but having Charlie is a bonus, I agree he's a good actor and he's excellent in SOA. I'm not at all befuddled by his decision but I am nervous for him, I hope it works out. I support him in the role and wish the best for him.

I like your signature! I think your brains will survive, even this. :flowers:

Just because something sold well doesn't mean it's good. Lady Gaga and Katy Perry make millions on other people's bad taste. And that is exactly what Hollywood stands for at the moment. The priority is to cash in on bad taste. Quality movies are secondary. I hope he remembers that he has to shave the beard for this. What was he saying about not corrupting Jax again? Nevermind.

Charlie out for lunch with a friend and at the airport.
