OK---here's another question for all you Chanel RTW experts! For quite a while I've been looking for a beautiful lightweight replacement raincoat (with hood) for my beloved 23 year old Sonia Rykiel piece that finally died last year and got compliments from strangers until the bitter end. My SA suggested I try the navy anorak styled one with black lace lining from this fall---Look 32 (that to be honest, I thought looked terrible on the hanger). They are ordering one in my size, but she tried the 38 on and it was AMAZING on her! Of course, it will have to fit me. BUT my issues are --- 1) it's really expensive for what it is (the price of a nice Chanel jacket) and 2) maybe doesn't even look that much like Chanel. Would this be a deal breaker for you? Have you had this dilemma in the past? If it fits and looks good, no doubt I would get tons of use as a travel coat that I could layer under and work for both day to evening. Thanks in advance for your thoughts!

I would always consider this to be a fashion coat. If you need a real raincoat, then get a real raincoat that you don't have to worry about it you get drenched. I think lightness is pretty important in a raincoat used for travel and I would try to find something like your old coat. They are out there and for a lot less money.

This is a tough one. Clearly you make good decisions if your last coat lasted that long. You have to ask yourself if you love it enough to justify the price and whether you could get something comparable in terms of style and quality for less money.

I have liked some of the pea coats for example from the Paris Rome collection and they were beautifully made, but in the end I didn't love them enough to spend that amount on them. I'm more excited about this season's coats which seem more Chanel to me. Others here have bought some pieces that are not quite as quintessentially chanel and they love them and get more wear out of them. So it's really a personal decision.

What is the fabric? It says taffeta. It's not silk right? That would make it a bit less travel worthy I think.

Thank you, Pocketbook Pup. The fabric is nylon but looks like silk and the SA's lookbook says it is water resistant. For it to be waterproof completely it would probably be for me a hot, plastic mess. What I loved about my SR coat was that it went everywhere---one could have said that it was a fashion coat---because it had such beautiful detailing and was timeless. It also was an anorak style. I travel a lot and rainjackets/coats are always problematical---I have a number of classic trench style coats but they are more limiting in terms of heaviness and layering. In the past I've looked at Akris (and have previously bought their 3 in one coats)---but they aren't nearly as fun and don't have a hood. Almost the same price... sigh.

This is totally a personal decision for sure. For me I had a Prada nylon jacket I got years ago for around 700. The lining is shedding and I'm dreading that I might have to junk it. For me the cost of that chanel jacket would prohibit me from wanting to get it wet ... but if you think the cost is ok for you and you love it then you should get it. Only you know if that's worth it to you :) it is a lovely coat and I love the cardigan w it in the pic!

What you say makes a lot of sense then. It really sounds like you will use this piece a lot. If it lasts you another 23 years it's well worth the price. You should try it. Please tell us what you think and consider posting a photo.

Thanks, pigleto972001! I guess your question about being afraid of wearing it because of the cost is something I'll have to consider... Good point. If that's the case, then no point in buying it.

Thanks again Pocketbook Pup. I'll let you all know if I go for it---probably will arrive tomorrow... For me it's always finding the balance between practical and (getting seduced by) the beauty (for example, I just bought another barenia bag even though my Hermes SA thought I'd be better off with clemence---LOL!). Here I was hoping that this coat might have done that... will know more soon! Thanks again, everyone!

YAS!!!!!! Rock them booties.

When I tried it I was told it was "mature" on me. I couldn't get it off fast enough lol. I just don't have the wearwithal to make it look good I guess. Haha.

Yes I might have to adjust my wants and go for the low boots. I'll have to try the high ones and see [emoji106][emoji106]
I saw that jacket at Saks and thought "that would look great on mom" - she's 72. There's something about that pattern.

This is not a totally responsive answer but after many raincoat mistakes I have a Loro Piana that I love. It's warm, waterproof, indestructible, and folds into nothing for travel. For truly bad weather I wouldn't wear Chanel.

I tried on a few pieces today but didn't take pictures because I was in the dressing room with my mother, who already thinks I'm a bit of a nut with all the time I spend on TPF. I tried on two sweater dresses - the black cashmere one with the pearl fastener detail at the shoulder, and another in black with gold metallic thread and lovely gold/brass colored buttons. They were both a bit itchy, but the one with the pearl details was gorgeous. I thought the black was a little funereal, but the boutique didn't order the aqua one in either the dress or regular sweater.

Also tried on wide legged black trousers with the cuff detail at the hem, but they only had a 36 and I needed a 34. They were lovely though, and the first pair of wide legged and high waisted trouser I've tried on that didn't give make it look like my crotch was down to my knees.

The last thing I tried on was a very form fitting black turtleneck top with some sheer detailing across the chest and thin pleats. It also had these beautiful little muted gold buttons up the sides. That was by far my favorite thing I tried, but it was $2,650 and I couldn't justify that for what is essentially just a black turtleneck.

Although pretty to look out, I doubt it will hold up well in the rain... depends on how much practicality you want!
