Hi
@TraceySH , will you be able to find out if chanel actually did use bonded leather? Something is very off with leather or the material. I wish they disclosed what type of material they used. Anything you hear from chanel please share it with us! Greatly appreciate the input.
I don't know. Chanel never admits fault or shows any level of humility/ transparency. I doubt they would ever overtly come out and say, hi, we use leather remnants and put PU on top of that, which should make these bags last until the apocalypse, minus the chafing, peeling, and, under certain circumstances, melting. What I DO know about them, is that if they were using beautiful or high end hides, they'd let us all know. Note: we no longer see "lesage" anywhere do we? Just look at how much they laud their timepieces, after partnering with a centuries old movement company..and they go into great detail about construction etc. So my thought here is that if they did something truly amazing, they'd sure let us know. The 22 ain't it. "A supple yet resistant leather". That tells me, chemicals.

And my black one reeks of chemicals.

In most countries, something need only be a tiny fraction of actual leather to be called "leather". Logic also tells me that, for a company to have netted the most profit in its history, $5B last year, during a pandemic, that not only did they raise prices but lowered production/ materials costs.

You know, most of us just keep buying Chanel regardless. The prices are stupid, the quality was never there (except in rare instances perhaps). So clearly we buy more for the brand and the design, and less for the quality ....not sure why Chanel wouldn't just take the opposite route and say, we are using alternative materials or maybe even eco-conscious "leather" (or at least make it that way in production) or heck, even PVC or PU leather, would anyone really stop buying?

Sharing an update on my 22 for those who are interested, hope it helps!

I got my 22 in Black, medium size, in Paris in March during the launch week and have been using ever since at least once a week.
IMO it´s a carefree bag and I usually put inside cosmetic pouch (besides the one that comes with the bag), a jacket, glasses, water bottle, keys, Iphone, daily basis stuff. I´ve used this bag to walk around Paris and in the city I live, not only in special occasions, and didn´t had any issues so far.
The chains don´t hurt my shoulder, but I imagine that if you put a lot of stuff inside the bag/it gets too heavy this can happen.
No leather cracking, letters or medallion falling, etc. Even the amazing leather smell that the bag had when I got it from the boutique remains and the soft touch also remains the same.

You are lucky that you have a non-defective one. I am sure there are plenty of them. And also plenty that don't smell like they might combust at any moment. HOWEVER, please do understand that this is a gamble. If you happen to receive a non-defective one, like yours, great! But what if you get a defective one? What then? What would you tell those people? You have to use it to know it's defective, and once you do, you cannot return. Chanel CANNOT REPAIR THESE. Just everyone beware, you might be out $5000-6000 if you get a bad one.

By the way, this is my black. It does NOT look like the one above. The "leather" looks thinner, it's shiny, it stinks, and it feels like plastic. This one hasn't even been used, the tags are still attached.

Okay so I was wondering about the smell. Mine came on a really hot day and felt like it had been baking on the delivery truck. It smelled so strong and not quite like leather. I actually had to let it air out for a few days to even use. I used it. Loved it. Even commented here what a carefree easy bag it was. Then noticed weeks later after using day to day that it was peeling. I was torn and I know it has a lived in vibe already…relaxed etc….but I just couldn’t wrap my head around the peeling for the price paid. I definitely wouldn’t be happy if it got worse. I did contact my SA. Chanel refunded me. I miss it already but I will wait until they figure this out.

Wow I’m actually starting to think they mixed batches with bonded/pvc or whatever fake leather along with real ones. That’s why some people have no issues on some and others do.
As for RTW I seen so many dropped shoulders lately, they must be saving money on those fitted, structured jackets but slap the same price tag though.
It’s like a food industry some countries can get away calling it a organic juice but they only need to use 1% of organic and rest can be synthetic. As consumer we would never know because these money hungry companies met the minimum industry standard/requirements.
My white 22 completely start to breaking down after with 1 wear for about less than 30 min I would say. Bag was only 3 weeks old. I got lucky because botique manager and SA was so nice they offered me a full refund with out any questions asked as soon as they saw my bag has deteriorated like if it was 100
Year old bag.
I start to wonder if they would or have used bonded leather for all their seasonal bags, heck their classic flaps too ha ha.
What drew me to the brand was history but it’s eye opening to see what it has become today.
Edit I added pic of my white 22 again for reference

Real leather will never ever ever smell like that. Mine reminds me of those Kathy Van Zeeland bags way back when. Anyone remember those? I’m glad you got refunded. I think this is going to be how they solve it without advertising an issue. Just refund.

I’m glad they refunded you. I think this is what’s happening now, at least hinted to me. You can send back … I hope it’s this way for all boutiques.

I’ve wondered about many other bags from Chanel. I got the fringe bags earlier this year and remember thinking oh my gosh this is real leather! Made me realize that so many others are probably not, and I just became desensitized. I know most are just painted, not dyed through. I also wondered if they started lining the CCH with leather again & used some kind of plastic leather on the outside (that’s what they feel like) so they can call them “leather”.

That looks like paint??? Plastic? Rubber? PU leather (poly urethane or bonded) peels, stinks and melts.

This bag makes me really never want to buy Chanel again. I understand coming out with styles every now and then that don’t take off or just don’t appeal to everyone but this is just embarrassing. Why is the brand deteriorating like this? Where is their creative team and what are they thinking? And the YouTube videos showing it could be bonded leather is just salt on the wound.

My eyes are open too now. Im thinking back to seasonal bags that could be something other than leather. Thinking of all the small bags that have been sold and what are they made out of. Are the classics using actual leather? We do know the caviar is a stamped leather, but what kind of leather exactly? And if its got 1% of leather in it, it can still be called leather, just like made in Italy might not mean all that much. I can tell you that I did have a SA right away tell me they knew this 22 bag was bonded leather-at least the metallics. I really doubt just the metallics would use that product if the others were real leather.

We do know that 'sustainability' can be a good cover up for for using poor or cheap products. Take a look at the Chanel website and there is not much there about leather or how bags are made.

It kills me when I see some of these new bags coming out that are versions of older bags that were done really well. There were older bags (Bon Bon for example) that were made so much better. Why did this new design have to so poorly made, why the cheap gold letters instead of beautiful stitching on the outside? Who do they think their client is?

If you want VVIP clients, you need to first have VVIP quality and service. We are a long ways off from that. This 22 bag has caused quite a stir and lets not forget that Purse Blog had to take down the post because someone did not like all the negative comments. I can imagine how THAT convo went. And that was before quality issues surfaced.
