My eyes are open too now. Im thinking back to seasonal bags that could be something other than leather. Thinking of all the small bags that have been sold and what are they made out of. Are the classics using actual leather? We do know the caviar is a stamped leather, but what kind of leather exactly? And if its got 1% of leather in it, it can still be called leather, just like made in Italy might not mean all that much. I can tell you that I did have a SA right away tell me they knew this 22 bag was bonded leather-at least the metallics. I really doubt just the metallics would use that product if the others were real leather.

We do know that 'sustainability' can be a good cover up for for using poor or cheap products. Take a look at the Chanel website and there is not much there about leather or how bags are made.

It kills me when I see some of these new bags coming out that are versions of older bags that were done really well. There were older bags (Bon Bon for example) that were made so much better. Why did this new design have to so poorly made, why the cheap gold letters instead of beautiful stitching on the outside? Who do they think their client is?

If you want VVIP clients, you need to first have VVIP quality and service. We are a long ways off from that. This 22 bag has caused quite a stir and lets not forget that Purse Blog had to take down the post because someone did not like all the negative comments. I can imagine how THAT convo went. And that was before quality issues surfaced.
Spot on as usual @gail13 ;)

This is getting fishier. So if the inside is leather the outside is _____? Some brave soul can hold them next to a flame. If it melts, it’s not leather.
Thats hilarious. I think there are definitely other styles that use this 'leather'. This isn't just some new leather all of a sudden.

I think over the last ten years alot has slowly changed that we had no ideas about. Many people think their bag is handmade but it is not.

Well people think Hermes is handmade too. (KB & some parts of C but that’s it). It’s all trickery really. If they are handmade using beautiful hides, ANY brand, they will let you know over and over again. Delvaux is one that comes to mind.

Thank you for your comments and for sharing your valuable and hard earned experience. My metallic 22 looks and feels like real leather... thankfully, I have had no issues thus far with my bag.... it was sold to me as calfskin leather, and I believe it is... I know whenever I have situations with my Chanel items, the boutique is there to give me a hand.... and over the years they have been helpful and nice addressing my questions and issues... I know the moment I have a problem with my 22 bag, the boutique will be there to answer.

There was a period when my relationship with my local Chanel boutique was not easy. After all things were said, I have to recognize they have known how to quickly and gracefully turn the situation around...

Now....I fraternize with your fears and bad experiences as I read your comments about the issues and quality, etc.... I hope this experiences serve as a basis to understand Chanel and the brand it has become today, and ultimately decide whether you support it regardless of their flaws, quality issues, corporate policies, price points, price increases, etc.... and ultimately, like an old friend, see whether you accept old Chanel as it is today.... and as I said in an earlier post, we can’t expect perfection, not even from Chanel.... it is what it is, it’s your decision whether you buy from them or not....

Thank you for the information you provided. You must be highly respected on the tpf platform because anyone else would have been thumbs down and angry emoji from here to kingdom come. I looked up the word bonded leather and I came across some interesting facts. On one video I saw someone recommended putting the bag in a cold room/ refrigerator for a couple of hours and this usually takes away or lessen a odor on a handbag. One thing I like about LV they own up to their mistakes have recalls of defective products and issues a credit immediately. Chanel? LOL :giggle:
Keep us posted on how this issue was resolved with your handbags.

Oh I don't know about that. My suspicion is we all "know" that Chanel has some rascal to the brand, and we love-hate it. I mean, I have been vocal about my issues w/ them over the years, and have written letters that have gone all the way up, been on some calls, etc. If they wanted to ban me b/c I was speaking my mind, I was always prepared for that. BUT I've been a VERY good client despite my grievances b/c I want them to WANT to be better. I have an emotional attachment, so my anger is less about b**tching and more about c'mon you guys! Step it up! My RTW experience last week was :annoyed: I know the boutique was thoroughly embarrassed.

SO a friend and I were talking about LV the other day. Legit if there's an issue, they take care of it in 2 seconds flat. Even years later. Even CALL YOU years later to say, we see you have this item, it's been deemed defective, do you want a refund, credit or replacement? I had the little plastic nose thing on some sunglasses I wore for 2 years break, and I got the replacement pair before I even sent in the old broken pair. I never have any anxiety about LV. Ever. Excellent customer service there, Moynat, Delvaux, Gucci, Valentino. Not great customer service (IMO) Chanel, Hermes, Dior, Prada. Some the fault of SA, some the fault of the mother ships, some a combo of both.

My suggestion to everyone with or buying this bag, which by the way I DO really love!! Is ASK when you're buying, IF there's a defect, will they stand behind it? And hopefully each boutique says they will. Then that abates the risk of maybe getting a defective one.

Like anything else, more is always revealed

Again thank you for your knowledge and wisdom. Me personally? If I hear of multiple defects or issues of a product I definitely wouldn't purchase. The customer that counter against negative reviews of a product saying they do not have this issue good for them. To me if not now somewhere in the future these issues could surface. Now if the vendor corrects the issue I will still do a wait and see before I might purchase. As far as Chanel or the boutique telling a customer that spent a couple of thousands of dollars that they will stand behind their product we as the consumer shouldn't have to demand a response this should be a automatic policy.

I hope it is leather, but from what we are seeing, and what I was told, I can't see how it is 100% leather. Im not sure how everyone who bought a bag thinking its 100% leather will feel upon finding out it's something else? Maybe people are ok with it?

It seems that there are a range of responses to what will be repaired, warrantied and what is not. We all know not everything we might feel is a defect, is seen as a defect by the company making the product. But this issue addresses more than that.

My bag feels like calfskin, and calfskin will develop a nice patina.... I don’t forcibly cinch it, I am going for the natural square look...

Agree completely on all of it. I’ve distanced myself quite a bit, and buy a lot less than I did. Too much of a headache nowadays. And I think the rigmarole gets old.

But, since I’ve been guilty of my own duplicitous approach to them, I didn’t want to appear as though my (normally high) principles have prevailed in every situation.

I am actively looking for great alternatives to Chanel, and will gladly leave if/ when there is one!!

As a fellow Chanel customer I am glad and thankful there are people like you, who altruistically invest themselves in giving Chanel honest and constructive feedback for the improvement of the brand.

If the time comes of a possible flaw with my 22 bag, the boutique can count on me coming their way for a conversation. I have been as well, on the verge of being ousted from the brand for being transparent and naive... I have been through periods where I have thought I would not come back to Chanel because of their un-classy policies and the way they treat people. A big turn off I constantly have from Chanel is their flashiness, and the risk of getting robbed which goes with it after so many well publicized price increases....this brand has become expensive, and it is now well known for their hefty price tags. Personally, I dislike to come across as a pretentious person because I wear Chanel pieces. In any event, my metallic blue Chanel 22 is very low key, discrete and flies under the radar.... this is the main reason why I bought it.... Yes, please do share with us other quality brands you discover..... thank you again Tracey....

I have been in a constant state of ambivalence with Chanel for a very long time! I broke up w/ them once, but that didn't last haha. There's a lot they ask you to stomach in having a "relationship" with them, and sometimes you're gaslit, exhausted, irritated, angry, confused, and other times happy, excited, elated, etc. ...makes for a hard and predictable, stable outcome. Alas, things are never absolute, always a grey area. I wish deciding one way or the other were easier! Am I in? Or am I out?

The truth is I miss Karl, and all that goes with that!

But, back to the 22 bag, as that's what this thread is all about.

What we know is that Chanel is dialed in on everything we say or do...so, the bright side of all this? Perhaps they will see the concerns here. Perhaps whatever issues there are or could be, they will mitigate going forward so that this lovely, cute, functional design will be issue free for us all!
