Hello everyone,
I hope the community can help me with some questions I have. I recently ordered a couple of Bastias and Calvis in Chevre. The black one I received was unfortunately a bit crooked (when closed the edges did not align, but were lopsided), so I ordered another two to pick the best one. I now discovered the following:
1.) Chevre grain to me seems to look different horizontally from vertically, which to my eye seems to Impact the sheen. However, when Bastia or Calvi are produced, the craftsperson does not seem to use a special direction for vertical or horizontal. When the grain (to me it is sort of oval) is aligned horizontally, the Calvi has quite a disintive sheen, when it is vertically, the Calvi Looks matte and teh grain more pronounced. Has anyone experienced teh same?
2.) The Calvi with the sheen (which I prefer visually) is not as sturdy as the matte one or teh Bastia received (super sturdy and apparently grain aso aligned vertically). I have read a lot of the discussions about which leather is best for Calvi. While some People prefer Epsom for sturdiness, wear & tear, other clealy prefer Chevre. So my questions is: How important is it that a Chevre Calvi is sturdy to begin with?
TIA
its sturdy but of course not as sturdy as Epsom. I accidentally put a chanel cardholder next to a chevre calvi in a chanel mini and unfortunately chanel logo left a slight indentation mark, otherwise no issues

Has anyone have calvi or bastia in evercolor and can share how the leather hold? I’m planning to use it for coins and worried it will loose its shape or dent easily. I’m new to H and honestly never see evercolor IRL. Only have epsom but the color I’m eyeing is only available in evercolor. TIA

I have a Calvi in Evercolor and have used it daily for over a year. It really shows no sign of wear. And I like that it feels completely different than Epsom or Chevre because I can reach into my purse and pull out the correct case based on how it feels. Evercolor has a soft, “warm” feel to it. I think you will really like it.

Have a couple of Calvis in evercolor and they are just as enduring as Epsom or Chevre. It may have a smoother surface but doesn't scratch as easy and you can rub off the surface scratches. You should get it.

I love mine in evercolor. Coins in a bastia will be fine but not a calvi. My calvi has been perfect for cards and other things like headphones/ charging cords

Firstly, whatever the leather don't worry unduly. There is far too much concern on here over leather durability.
Obviously something that is flat, like a Bastia, will not be flat once you put coins inside it, but that is the purpose for what it was designed. Any leather item will stretch if you overfill it. Allthogh slim a Bastia is made of two layers of leather bonded together. Once you empty it, it should be square and flat again.

If I read you post correctly, I got the impression that you were considering either a Bastia or Calvi for coins.
A Calvi would not be a good idea; coins might go all over the place; it is designed for cards and cards will help it keep its shape.

I wouldn’t recommend you use a Calvi for the purpose of storing coins as the Bastia is made for that purpose. I do own a Calvi in Evercolor and it’s perfect for my cards and cash. I’ve used it daily for about 2 months now and love the feel of the leather and the convenience of its compatibility versus a wallet. It has also survived an accidental drop on the ground while at the gas station and came up without a blemish.

Thank you so much @Smocksilly @chkpfbeliever @noegirl @PJW5813 @VietCatholicMom you guys are wonderful. I wasn’t expecting so many feedback but every advise of your are very helpful. I really have no idea what evercolor looks like and its characteristic, I just remember someone mentioned ‘soft’ from other review in other thread so I’m worried it’s not a sturdy leather for SLG. Maybe it’s soft in surface like the feel as @Smocksilly and @chkpfbeliever refered to and not soft in rigidness as I assumed. Glad to hear it’s as sturdy as epsom and chevre.

I should’ve mentioned that it is bastia I’m getting for coins. I mentioned both because it’s a thread about calvi. Sorry for the confusion. I’m interested to know how evercolor wear and tear in calvi too because someone said in chevre the leather dents and moulds to the cards. Will evercolor do the same? I have 2 calvi and 2 bastia but all in epsom. That’s all my H items. No other experience with other leather yet. I use 4 of them for different purposes and found myself needing more (never get enough, lol). I really like the epsom but want rouge grenat which only available in evercolor via online.

Chèvre is lovely aesthetically to me but I do prefer Epsom for calvi or bastia. I just find epsom holds its shape better and I don’t need to fuss about dents or scratches. I always have the dilemma between choosing something that’s pretty vs choosing something ‘practical’.

For me it's all about the colour. I like Epsom, chèvre, box.... all the leathers have their charm
