I also posted on the "Can this Hermes be saved" but I will also post here because there is so much knowledge on this forum also. I am thinking of buying this very used So Black(!!) Kelly which is exciting. Though it is a little bit used, I plan on still getting it because of the price and I was wondering what hermes could do for these damages. I know it being Box leather the superficial scratches in the front and corners can be redone but how about this tearing(?) of the leather in the back? In some lighting, as you can see from picture 3, it is not all that bad but in other lighting (picture 4), it looks pretty bad. The leather is still pretty moist and not rly dry though the bag needs general conditioning.
In conclusion, I think the bag needs corner fix ups, edges redone, general leather conditioning and clean, and a replacement in hardware. I plan on sending it to hermes spa. Do you see any other work that needs to be done? Moreover, what is the expected rate of condition, when compared to new, when it comes back?? Would it be a stretch to say 8/10 (if currently the bag is 5/10)? I've never salvaged an Hermes before, so I really don't know what to expect. Anyhow, thanks in advance for your reply! :) happy holidays!!

I can’t find your other post but in looking at the pics, I don’t think it’s bad at all. I’ve seen so much worse on eBay and doc’s thread. The leather is not dry, rotting or peeling and I don’t see any tears. I would like to see a better close up of the flap though it doesn’t look bad from the pics. The scratches and marks (even the ones in the back) can be covered and the leather can be conditioned and polished. Hardware seems normal to me. It certainly won’t be a 10 but maybe a 7?Check out doc’s thread for instructions if you want to DIY it.

Hermes can fix corners, polish the bag, hide the scratches, replace hardware and even replace handles if need be.

The question really is are you going to care if it’s not an 8/10? If you are the type that needs something to look new, the spa may not meet expectations. I think this bag will spa nicely but I am someone who love the vintage look.

I bought a 1960’s beat up rouge h Kelly, refurbished it myself and I use it all the time. It’s in much worse condition than the bag you posted but I had Hermes replace the torn handle and I live with the scuffed corners. I like the vintage look and love the fact that I can dump it on the floor, drag it through the subway, throw it in my car and get it rained on without fear. My brand new pristine Kelly has been sitting in a box for over a year while my vintage one gets all the love.

I don’t know the price but if it were low enough, I would buy it and refurbish myself.

Thank you so much for your lengthy reply! I was surprised to see how much you and I have it common :) my brand new Hermes bags sit in the box while like vintage ones are the ones most carried!!! Anyways, thank you so much for your reply, and I hope this is the start to many other box calf bags since the leather seems to be amazing!! Here is a shot of my trying it on! IMG_4363.jpg I feel like it will make such a nice, casual, chic bag that goes with everything!!

You carry this bag so well!!!!! My vote is that if the price is right, and you are sure it’s authentic — go for it!!! I think there’s a lot of character in a vintage boxcalf Kelly and I prefer older to newer for a more casual chic look. I was reading a thread here recently that discusses how stylish Parisians always carry well-used Hermes bags!! The picture you posted reminded me of that thread since you look so stylishly edgy and chic. I love it!!! Best of luck and hope to see a before and after if you go through with it
