Beware of the super fakes

Sometimes collectors think they know everything. All depend, year and model. For example, last years Chanel double flap caviar have changed a lot, inside and outside. Many fellow forum members made comments about materials look plasticky and stitching is not even. Buying a second hand bag and take it to the same store is not a way to authenticate it; neither asking a friend. An authenticator it's good idea if inspection is not made only by pictures. The best is to go to the boutique and ask for the same model (if it's a recent design) and compare the possible considered flaws or imperfections.

Oh my God, the part with the children just broke my heart. How can people be so cruel!!!???

This is horrible. Some people are horrible. I am sending this article to my friend who thinks it is perfectly okay to buy super fakes to save money. It is heartbreaking what some human beings have to endure so others can appear to be wealthy. Sickening. [emoji22]

This is very good advice.

I bought a designer bag from Barney's warehouse (their discounted site). The bag must have been left in direct sunlight for a year because the leather was horribly discolored on one side. I took pictures, emailed them and they took it back - but only gave store credit because Barney's warehouse is final sale. The customer service in this transaction was excellent but I'm not keen on Barney's in general.

The moment you walk in the SA's are checking you out. If you're not carrying a Birkin they ignore you. I asked an SA if the carry Loewe. I pronounced it Lo-weh-beh with a soft "B". That's the proper Castilian pronunciation. I know because I was in Spain.

Anyway the SA pauses, stiffens and asks, "do you mean LOWE?" pronounced as Lowes hardware store. I just looked at her and said "yes, its pronounced Lo-weh-beh". She just sniffed and said, "this all we have". What a snot.

I ended up buying something at the Goyard section with my store credit. I was friendly but I don't think that SA knew how to smile. Its was all very weird.

I know many tPFers love Barney's, but I got the same impression the couple times I went there. Most SAs were just not very nice! Very standoffish and didn't want to help. Compared to Bergdorf's where everyone is so friendly and lovely, and even Saks, despite my one bad experience there, I find most SAs to be sweet...

I am a bit relieved that my favorites are seasonals and python bags. Of course they get faked too, but it does seem like they are much easier to tell than classics. Especially python bags- I have *never* seen a convincing fake python Chanel, and I have seen quite a few. Most are downright hideous and laughable...

Chinese (and others too I'm sure, but I'm talking about them because that's what I know about) do fake EVERYTHING though, even stuff so cheap you would think, why do they bother faking THAT?! ANY branded bags and clothes are given, but also- there are tons of fake Korean cosmetics on eBay, and a lot of them are cheap brands (e.g. Etude, Nature Republic) equivalent to drug store brands here or even cheaper. I guess if you sell enough of them, there's money to be made faking $5 lipstick or $10 cream...

I wanted to start a thread about super fakes. I'm always hearing they are out there, but I'm not sure I've actually seen any...or maybe I'm just not clued in enough to know what I'm looking for.

I heard from a very knowledgable source that super fakes came about because a worker in the Chanel factory stole a bunch of holograms and gave them to the counterfeit market.

Does anyone have any input?

There are many super fakes being sold in regular stores in Toronto. I saw one in "Pacific Mall".

I was so amazed at how close they look to the original, but unless you have felt the authentic, it would be very difficult to tell the difference. I saw one that was going for $400 CAD for a Chanel classic flap lamb skin jumbo.

May I ask what you mean by "regular store?"

If a store is an authorized distributor/reseller, the chance of them having a fake is minimal.

OTOH, if the "regular" store is a junk-type store (there's one near us that started mainly as a tobacco/cigarette/rolling papers, etc), report them to Chanel with specific information including store name, address, phone number, and possibly some pictures, they might have their legal team check it out.

I have seen fakes being sold in boutique environments on consignment. The way they get around this is to say that they are 'consigned bags and they can't guarantee authenticity'. That is pretty much saying they're fake IMO.

"Regular store" was a bad term to use in this case.
I meant as in an independently owned store that sells, in this case, counterfeit items.

It is almost common knowledge in Toronto that a lot of pirated stuff especially fake brand name handbags are sold in downtown china town as well as at "Pacific Mall". I am quite certain that Chanel knows about the presence of these stores in Toronto. It is up to Chanel to send private investigators to these establishments. The thing too is that it is not just fake Chanels that these stores sell but also other brand name stuff like LV, Dior etc.

Yet the fact that not much is being done might mean that there is not much they can do. They can try to shut down a single store selling counterfeit stuff but then another one will spring up somewhere else.

I recall before in the past, stores at pacific mall were selling pirated Hollywood DVD's and the police raided those stores and shut them down. For a while it was quiet, but then I saw them spring up again at other stores lol.

Not all Consignment stores have the resources and expertise to authenticate a handbag. These stores may have certain standards they follow when accepting handbags for consignment, in order to make it SEEM like their store is legitimate and can be trusted, but these stores can never guarantee that the handbags on consignment are all authentic.

Perhaps in the past when superfakes or well made counterfeit handbags were not yet in circulation it was more easier to tell whether a bag was authentic or fake, and thus consignment stores was a good option for purchasing pre-loved bags. Now, I would be very skeptical in purchasing from consignment stores and it would be up to the buyer to assess whether the bag is authentic or not using whatever limited resources are available to them.

Be careful when buying Chanel costume jewelry on eBay!!
There have been many fake Chanel costume jewelry pieces being listed on eBay Australia. The seller/s keep creating new eBay accounts, often have 0 feedback and are located in Melbourne, Victoria. I bought a necklace that was meant to be 100% authentic. It looked 99% identical to a matching bracelet I had bought a year earlier from the Chanel store in Sydney . The necklace came with a box and even a fake receipt. They had copied a receipt but used different paper that they use at Chanel and the price on the receipt was way too low for a long necklace at Chanel store in Australia.
Scamners are getting very clever and it can be so hard to tell a super fake from real one. After I received the necklace I searched for replica Chanel online and found the same necklace on a website selling fakes for $93 and I paid over $600 for it on eBay! I'm currently doing a PayPal claim and hoping to get a refund. Just wanted to share this so that others can avoid getting scammed on eBay too.
