bags that DON'T work for you

- Large handheld bags. Small handheld bags are ok, though, but only if they're very tiny.

- Bags that supposedly are "both" handheld and shoulder bags. They're actually handheld bags; stop advertising them as something they're not! A good example I can think of is the Gerard Darel 24 Heures bag, which I bought at a steal 2 months ago. Contrary to what they advertise, it is not a shoulder bag. The handles are too short and slips off my shoulder when the bag is full or if I'm in a rush. Not to mention the strap drop is not that great. BTW, I'm also petite; I'm a size 2 and just under 5'5", so I'm not very tall. I had a Coach bag that was similar and I sold it; I am debating on selling this one, too, but I might just give it to my mom.

This also goes for bags that have an add-on strap like the Givenchy Antigona. I think the strap makes the bag look awkward because it doesn't look like it was originally designed for it.

- Minaudieres. I would love to own one, but I'm not that posh/fancy. I need something that can hold my keys or at least my cellphone!

- Bucket bags. Argh. I've had several of these and sold all of them. I hate dealing with drawstrings, plus the "piling" of my stuff made it hard to access things at the very bottom.

- Large messenger bags

- Backpacks

- Fabric (non-coated canvas)/patent leather bags. Nylon is the exception.

- Large, all-leather bags. Too heavy.
Wanted to add to this list:

- handheld clutches that don't have a strap option. I sold my YSL Belle Du Jour bag recently because I couldn't get over not being able to go hands-free at all.

- flat handbags. The silhouette is nice, but I don't like it when my stuff makes the bag bulge out. Looks sloppy.

Did anyone mention a box/rectangle shape (ie Pochette Metis, Soho Disco, camera bags). I wish someone who loved this style could illuminate why they like it... I find it very hard to wear a bag on me that is basically just a giant box. It does not look feminine to me at all. I can't get behind a box/rectangle bag shape at all (after several fails).

I'm beginning to fall out of love with the Speedy. I love the size but it can be such a pain to carry especially with my lifestyle. However, mine is a Limited Edition speedy (Cerises collection) and I love that line. I do need to make a decision whether to post it for sale or not. Help!

If it doesn't work for you- sell it! Perhaps you could get a small item from the cerises line if you love it?

(Can admins alter posts? I posted "I'm not desperate for the money though" and it was reworded.)

Bags that are complicated to get into (Bayswater, Birkin). I get sweaty when I can’t move away from the cash desk immediately after my transaction is done and everyone is waiting on me.

Clutches that don’t have a wristlet option or (better) a convertible strap

Anything with a double strap. They fall off my shoulders

Bags where the shoulder straps adjoin to the arm straps on the sides and not to separately placed rings on the ends. It looks so awkward to me and also not the most secure. (Coach I’m looking at you and your but-for-this gorgeous rogue)

I’ve learned hard lessons lol

I sold my cerise speedy. The opening was just too small. Since my baby was born, I stopped carrying it completely, because it was handheld only. I know I could get a shoulder strap, but I don’t think that the bag is made to be carried on the shoulder unless it’s a bandouliere version. Otherwise I like everything wih cherries. Good luck deciding!

Thank you for your input. I decided to see how much they're selling for on Ebay. I'm very impressed with those numbers especially since I have the original receipt as well. I bet I could make money ontop of what I paid.

What a fun but important thread! Interesting to see here what others have felt about their bags that didn’t work for them. Here’s what hasn’t worked for me:

1) Bags from bottega Veneta: I love the look of these bags and think they are so beautiful and understated but they just do not work for me. The problem I’ve had with them is mainly durability. The weave after a while starts looks very sad. The last one I had was so poorly made it had a permanent dent.

2) mansur gavriel bags: I have owned the canvas bucket bag and the crossbody. Both did not hold up well with only a few months of use. The canvas one also showed any speck of dust and the cross body had a flap that showed dents around the button closure.

3) chanel cocohandle: I love this bag but it just isn’t me. I am a casual cross body type of person and the handle on this makes the bag too formal for me.

4) chanel jumbo: too big and heavy and again too formal for my casual lifestyle. I never use it for these reasons and also I get a little paranoid carrying such a nice bag just to do errands.

5) longchamp le pliage - the rounded straps always fall off my shoulder. The nylon ones also don’t hold up well after a while. The interior stitches that hold up the handles start tearing.

6) any light colored handbag: color transfer!

7) Gucci handbags: have owned two and that’s enough for me. One had stitching comemoff the handles after a months use. The second had a handle just fall off.

8) mini bags: can’t fit anything really in them. Doesn’t suit my lifestyle!

I really like the shape of the camera bag as a cross body, especially for travel. I think that you can avoid the box-like look by looking for the size that isn't too small or big. If the straps are removable, then you can use it as a clutch. With some details, it can be more feminine. Here are some examples of what I mean. I'll pick on Chanel since they seems to be one of the few to offer the style in different variations over the decades.

I love the outside full pocket (not a little patch that you can't fit a smart phone in), I wish more designers would include larger outside pockets into their designs instead of just adding a small rectangular piece of leather patch like an after thought. :annoyed:

I agree that if the size is too big for your frame then it doesn't look good. The bag below illustrates this. How the bag sits from the front, doesn't look nice. If the strap was shorter maybe it wouldn't look too bad.
