bags that DON'T work for you

I really like the shape of the camera bag as a cross body, especially for travel. I think that you can avoid the box-like look by looking for the size that isn't too small or big. If the straps are removable, then you can use it as a clutch. With some details, it can be more feminine. Here are some examples of what I mean. I'll pick on Chanel since they seems to be one of the few to offer the style in different variations over the decades.

I love the outside full pocket (not a little patch that you can't fit a smart phone in), I wish more designers would include larger outside pockets into their designs instead of just adding a small rectangular piece of leather patch like an after thought. :annoyed:

I agree that if the size is too big for your frame then it doesn't look good. The bag below illustrates this. How the bag sits from the front, doesn't look nice. If the strap was shorter maybe it wouldn't look too bad.

Great examples of beautiful camera bags! I reeeeaaally want that second one.

But...I have to say the photos of the actress wearing the bags don’t look bad to me at all. I’m slim and a small or smallish medium bag looks best in my frame. But, sometimes I actually have to carry things. LOL! So, I can’t just think about scale. These look just fine to me.

I’m going to name a lot of the extremely popular designer bags that don’t work for me, I do actually like some of the brands but just not the particular styles...

1. Hermes birkin - do you know how heavy the bags are without shoulder straps? I’m not willing to risk arm injury, plus all I need to carry to carry is just wallet, keys and phone
2. Celine luggage bags or any of the larger versions - again heavy, there’s no way I can carry them + laptop etc for work/study
3. Givenchy Antigona medium - heavy and bulky same reason as above, also afraid of scratching the smooth leather version (but I do love Givenchy bags in other styles, great quality and under the radar)
4. Chanel coco - the handle gets in the way if you try to open the bag with just one hand
5. LV pochette metis - again not a bag that can be easily opened with one hand
6. Ysl bags - quality is just not there for the price?
7. Chanel Gabrielle - the base is sooooo susceptible to scratches and the opening is hard to get into (just like the opening of lady Dior)
8. Chanel boy bag - which I have, but the chain is not the most comfortable compare to others and it’s a bit boxy to carry crossbody, and there is no doubt that at some point the corners will be scuffed whether is caviar or lambskin
9. Chloe “nose-ring” bag makes me feel very uncomfortable...

Unfortunately, my Rebecca Minkoff Cupid doesn’t work for me at all. It’s too big for the style and has too much going on. It’s also unstructured and doesn’t look good that way. I love the color I chose (port with gold hardware). That’s not enough to make me grab for it though. It’s the only bag I’ve purchased since I’ve joined TPF that I’m sure I want to sell. I feel so guilty!

  • Unstructured bags that make me go fishing to find my stuff
  • Bags with dark interiors that also make it hard for me to find my stuff (this rule gets broken often, though, if I fall in love with the exterior)
  • Bags whose opening is too small or too cumbersome to get into
  • Bags that don't have a shoulder option
  • Bags whose shoulder option is too short to put on the shoulder using the same hand
  • Bags that can't stand up by themselves
  • Bags that show too many lumps and bumps from contents
  • Bags that spot in the rain
  • Bags whose bottoms fold or collapse when carried
Wow. I'm picky...but making this list will hopefully stop me from making the same mistakes over and over.

I agree with all of what you said!!!!!However, I still make the mistake of buying a bag with some of the negative features mentioned above if I think the bag is very cute and beautiful. Beauty always bites me back and I never learn!!!:whut:
