Bag Insults - Ever Had One?

I've gotten "I would never pay that much for shoes." to which I responded, "I would never pay that much for your shoes either. Just kidding, but you get where I'm coming from." And laughed moving onto the next topic. The issue was never brought up again.

I don't usually get bag insults, but I did get a weird comment today from a co-worker. I was wearing my new nude patent leather Valentino rockstud pumps and she looked down, stared at them, and said, "Those look...dangerous." She didn't say it in a nice way.

It didn't bother me because clearly she has no idea what they are and I love them.

I love the rockstud collection by Valentino - bags, shoes, everything. Your nude pumps sound awesome! (Jealous!!) :)

I would have responded, "Yeah! They are! Watch ooooutt!!!" in a weird voice and then watched her response.

People are so nerve-y.

Exactly how I feel! Explaining isn't going to stop the judgment because I have tried. So now I figure, why bother. And I'm not going to give them the satisfaction of ruining the enjoyment I get out of my bags or anything else they deem as "frivolous".

Yeah, asking if they want to pay for it works pretty well as you can see by your experience. LOL!
Thanks for your response. :)

I used to let barbs from snotty coworkers bother me all the time. Comments from my mom still bother me, because I know they're not made out of jealousy, but concern about my spending habits...which she has valid reason to be concerned about. (It's funny/not funny at the same time...I'm almost 37 (this April) and I still freak out when I "reveal" a new bag in front of my mom!)......

But as far as the coworkers and "friends" go....you know what? Life is too short. We have these material items for a short period of time. I'm obsessed with my bags, but at the end of the day, we leave what we come here with (nothing but our souls!). If people want to talk, let them talk. I don't have time for worrying about that crap anymore. I know who I love, I know I'm a good person, I treat people kindly as much as possible.....and while it's great to be able to vent about insults, we can't let these envious comments bother us. Easier said than done, I know. But ladies (and gents!), carry your handbags with pride. Screw 'em.

CoachCruiser, you have the best comebacks. I'm terrible with them. I usually am so flabbergasted by those kind of comments that I'm at a loss for words. But then, maybe a lack of reaction is all those kinds of comments deserve.

I forgot to mention that I never bring my nice designer bags to work. Just my shoes, clothes, and accessories, so they get picked on. But as you said, life is short. I've stopped caring too. People who make those comments are either jealous or just plain ignorant.

nycmamaofone: aw, thanks! But seriously, I often times think of comebacks after the fact and kick myself, wishing I had said the comment then and there, in the moment. Like you, I'm often flabbergasted by the rudeness of others. My husband is much blunter and crasser than me (aren't most men? lol), and he often gives me great one-liners to say.....but he works in a warehouse with lots of other men. The work place environment is MUCH different than mine. I can't exactly swear at a rude colleague in a school environment (tempting as it is). But the older I get, the less I care what people think. I used to hide my bags around this one coworker in particular. She's much younger than me, and really snarky. I used to be embarrassed by her glaring at my bags. Now: I DON'T CARE! LET HER STARE! Let her make comments!

You have a gorgeous collection of bags (I've seen here on tpf!) and you should most definitely show them off at work!!!! We're at work far more often than we are at home/on vacation/on weekends. :) :) Let 'em stare!

Amen! Couldn't have said it better myself! :ghi5:

It's so strange to me, all this seemingly constant speculation about other people's money situations. I mean, why does everyone care so much? I can honestly say, I rarely wonder how much money this person or that person makes/spends on their things vs what I spend on mine. If I see a bag I like, the only reason I would even think about how much was spent would be if I was planning to go out and buy one myself. And then I might ask who makes the bag and go home and look it up. If it's more than I want to spend, oh well... If I can afford it for myself, YAY! But other than that, I just don't see why anyone cares how much I spent on my bag, but if someone asks, I tell them because it makes no difference to me whether they know or not. And when people say they would never spend so much on a bag, I just shrug. Ok then... good to know.

Positive attitude! But a bunch of people, whom i know, check out every single item on your body to see how much you spend and what you have bought. So ridiculous! I didnt rob anyone to buy a bag, did i?! I dont see any point of judging people from what they carry!
