I get lots of "is it real". I always just smile & say yes.

The worst was when a girl in a former workplace told everyone I took out a loan to buy my Chanel PST :( I saved so hard for that &it was a completely mean thing to make up.

I'm sorry; that's just AWFUL! Reminds me of someone I work with here (I'm a high school teacher, and sometimes the teachers are worse than the students in terms of gossip/nasty comments). That would REALLY tick me off. It's pure envy.

ugh... this person said that my Bal first looked like a wal mart bag... uh... no, sweetie... your cheap @$$ walmart bag is trying to look like my bal first and FAILING!!!!!!

I've had numerous insults on the lines of "I'd never pay that much on a handbag" and "Is that real?". Being the motormouth that I am, I usually counter with something that shuts them up in a second...
One friend cracked me up, though; her first reaction to my new goatskin Mulberry was "A leather bag?! Leather is MURDER!", from there she went on to "OOOMG you paid too much! That's a crazy amount of money!" (too much=less than 300€ on a pristine Mulberry that now sells for almost 800?) and the play ended up in her smooshing and stroking the smelling the leather, telling me how absolutely lovely and divine it was - she looked like she wanted to roll on it like a cat would frolic on catnip! :p

The insults I can deal with, but jealousy is another matter. When my fore-mentioned Mulberry was new to me and I took it with me to work, some nice colleague of mine actually (and intentionally, since it was impossible it happened by accident) tried to harm my bag! We had discussed my pretty new bag earlier in the office, and as I took my bag out of the drawer we kept our handbags in, there was a pen mark drawn across it. Luckily, it came off the light colored leather with the help of l'Occitane hand cream...heads would have rolled if it had not!

Oh dear, that's an awful thing to do to you and to your bag! Surely it must have been done out of pure spite!

I wear Bottega Veneta almost eclusively and no one really recognizes it so I seldom get a negative comment. With the exception of "You sure do like that woven leather..."

I do read on tPF that some people just don't like BV--too plain, too old--I've read many a comment like that (I like to read the 'brands you will never buy' thread for some twisted reason). But that's the beauty of it. There's a bag for everyone! Even a plain, old gal like me!

My BIL took one look at my LV denim bag and said he thought my "jean purse": was ugly. I just laughed. You really can't expect me to care about the opinion of someone who's entire wardrobe is made up of biker clothes even though he doesn't ride. He thinks he is JAX from SOA. LOL

BV's quiet luxury is perfect for days when you just want to enjoy luxury to the max

I've gotten the bag insult about carrying Coach. I went into Neiman Marcus while carrying a plain black leather Coach and started looking around at the bags. Two sales associates were talking and one said, "If she carries that cheap Coach crap, then you know she won't buy anything in here." And she was right. I left the store. I got something similar from a sales associate at Barney's (only that one felt the need to point out that I was too fat for the clothes in the store while insulting my bag).

There are so many posts I would love to quote but there's just too many. I realize this one is old I just had to say something about it. What a lot of people don't get is they can't judge a book by it's cover. Someone carrying (insert expensive brand here) may be in debt up to their eyeballs and someone carrying a non-designer "cheap" bag may be richer than we could imagine. These types of situations always bring to mind the scene in Pretty Woman when Vivian (Julia Roberts) goes back into a store that wouldn't sell to her. The scene goes as follows:

Shop assistant: Hello, can I help you?
Vivian: I was in here yesterday, you wouldn't wait on me.
Shop assistant: Oh.
Vivian: You people work on commission, right?
Shop assistant: Yeah.
Vivian: Big mistake. Big. Huge. I have to go shopping now.

I would have gone back to NM and made sure those SAs saw my Barney's bag

On a personal note - I get those "another bag?", "how many bags do you have?", "is that new?" (I love this one when it's one I've used many times & that person has seen it before), "how much was that?" etc from co-workers, friends and family. I even have a friend (who I don't see often partially because of this) who likes to ask - did you win the lottery? or did a rich uncle die? I do my best to just ignore them. Once in a while, I'll ask - why? Did you want to pay for it? Whether I'm in debt or have billions of dollars in the bank - IT'S MY MONEY! They shouldn't care what I do with it. I don't care or ask what they do with theirs!

I can relate to this quite a bit. Female coworkers, especially, can be brutal. There are a couple of girls who are sincerely sweet with their compliments and seem genuinely interested in my handbags -- one young woman in particular who is so sweet and ooh and aahs with real appreciation for my stuff (but I almost find it embarrassing, because I like to keep a low profile!) -- but the others?? I get dirty looks, snarky comments, glares at my handbags....UGH.

I feel like saying: "I don't go to spas. My roots are down to my elbows, practically, because I haven't wanted to bother spending 3.5 hours in a chair coloring my grays/dark roots with blonde highlights, I wear inexpensive clothes, have a ridiculously small collection of shoes, 1 pair of jeans, I don't eat out often, I don't get my nails done every week, I don't go on expensive vacations every year......Handbags are MY THING. Everybody has A THING. Let it GO, already!"

And then I think, "These people don't even deserve hearing all of that. If they want to be judgmental, screw 'em. Let them live in ignorance as they go out to blow over $150 on dinner and drinks with their friends. That's their perogative, let them spend their money the way they like, and I'll spend my money the way I like."

Ignorance and envy are awful traits.

p.s. I laughed out loud when I read your comment, "Do you want to pay for it??!!" That was awesome.

It reminded me of a side story (sorry for the tangent): Every time I walk into Dior, the security guard is pushier than the (lovely, cheerful) salespeople. Literally every bag I pick up a bag to admire, he says to me, "You like? You should buy it! Beautiful! Buy it!" He does it EVERY TIME and I got tired of making polite responses one day. So I started shooting back, "Really? Are you going to buy it for me? Buy it for me! Yes, you buy for me!" That shut him up pretty fast. Lol.

I think BV is beautiful. And when those girls who bought the more "exciting" bags have to TRY to sell them or just eventually put them in the back of their closet because the trendiness is dead, you'll know your bags are forever!

Exactly how I feel! Explaining isn't going to stop the judgment because I have tried. So now I figure, why bother. And I'm not going to give them the satisfaction of ruining the enjoyment I get out of my bags or anything else they deem as "frivolous".

Yeah, asking if they want to pay for it works pretty well as you can see by your experience. LOL!

On Christmas the wealthy granny of my cousin saw my lv Trevi standing in the *****dor and asked my cousin admiringly if it was hers ? I just passed by and said that she is my bag .....the granny looked at my bag then at me and said in a very snobbish way: one has to be able to aford sth special and expeeensive like that like that .....I was irritated and then said :It was a birthday present from me to myself , I work hard and deserve it and then left
The funny thing was the reaction of my cousin who owns several LVS as well.....She was very angry about the arrogant behavior of her granny ......................:laugh::laugh:

ANother thing my best friend always tells me :I could never bring myself for spending more than 300 € on handbags with a very dssaproaving look ........
