Hi there! Apologies in advance if I misformat my first post to ask for help in authenticating a Coach Willis 9927 that I recently purchased on Mercari.

Item: Vintage coach Willis british tan top handle leather crossbody

Listing number: n/a
Seller and site where listed: ‘Envied Closet’ on the site Mercari
Link: https://www.mercari.com/us/item/m66129202809/?sv=lg
Comments: Attached are photos I took after receiving the bag from the seller. (Note, there’s tiny print on the zipper slider on the inside of the bag that has the letters YKK on it that I had a hard time capturing in the photos due to the lighting.) The measurements of the bag are 10.5” (Length) x 9” (Height) x 3.5” (Width). The serial number is D0C-9927. The reason why I’m slightly worried is because when I searched this forum to see if this serial number had already been authenticated in the past, I happened across this post from 2013 about a bag that is a different color (Black instead of British Tan) than the one that I purchased that shares the same serial number: https://forum.purseblog.com/threads/authenticate-this-coach.818914/post-25296686
Many thanks in advance and I hope my post is clear and isn’t too confusing to digest.

You've been getting a lot of bad information from someplace and are looking at things that don't have any way of proving or disproving authenticity, and some non-existant "Rules" that are just plain lies.

Before you go a step farther buying Coaches, CAREFULLY read the entire thread that includes the six Salearea Coach Guides that I wrote over the last 12 years. Some of the older links no longer work but all of the actual information is accurate. Pay special attention to Part 2- Coach Authenticity Guides - Facts and Myths to learn what to believe and what NOT to believe.

THE BRAND STAMPED ON A ZIPPER DOESN'T PROVE ANYTHING. PLEASE STOP WASTING YOUR TIME TRYING TO TAKE PHOTOS OF IT. Read my Signature at the bottom of everyone of my posts.

YOU CAN'T "AUTHENTICATE" A SERIAL NUMBER. You can only authenticate a physical item based on the actual visible details of the item. Why couldn't counterfeiters copy "real" serial numbers into fake bags? And serial numbers DON'T include color codes. A serial number by itself can NEVER prove a "Coach" is genuine, although it can sometimes prove a bag is fake. In Coaches made after 1994, hundreds of bags of the same style can have exactly the same serial number - AND SO CAN HUNDREDS OF FAKES.

The bag you're asking about is a genuine Willis Bag made in 2000

Hello, could you look at the following?

Item: Becket Zip
Where purchased or how obtained: estate sale a few months ago
Comments: I noticed the pull looks wrong, but I'm wondering if it is a replacement. The creed is faint. I put some baking soda on it to see the numbers better.

Thanks in advance!

The zipper pull was not made or used by Coach.

The creed is unreadable but what I can see of the serial number is a problem. The first 6 digits look like 0974-53? and unfortunately 0974-534 and several other 0974-53x numbers are always fake. Combine that with the very poorly stamped serial number and the non-Coach zipper pull and I'd say there's a very good chance that bag is fake. The border around the Coach name at the top of the creed stamp doesn't look right either. Sorry.

Please refer to the post at the top of each page of the thread outlining what we need for authentication requests. In addition to pictures, we need links to listings, seller ID and if not an online purchase with a link to show then let us know where you purchased it.

Thanks.

Okay, thanks. I think I remember buying it in a rush and didn't look closely. Ugh.

AUTHENTICATE This COACH

Please post authenticity questions related to COACH in this thread.

Note: The PurseForum requests that only members with an extensive knowledge of the brand and authenticating who have over 500 posts participate as authenticators in this AT thread. The moderators reserve the right to remove authentications that do not meet these requirements.

Please follow the following rules:

  • Before you submit a request for authentication, please search this thread to make sure that the item has not previously been authenticated. This is not a thread to ask general questions about COACH, please refer to our main Coach forum for such information.
  • This is a free service, but it is imperative that you help our authenticators by using the following format:

    Item:
    Listing number:
    Seller:
    Link:
    Comments:

  • If the bag in question is not on an auction site, please use the following:

Item Name (if you know it):
    Link (if available):
Then attach any photos (all authentication must include photos.)
    • Please be sure to include a clear readable photo of the creed stamp and serial number from inside the bag or accessory if there is one, and the bag's measurements when the bag is an older or vintage leather Coach.
    • Since mid-2014, Coach stopped putting serial numbers on creeds so in newer bags where the creeds don't have serial numbers, we also need to see pictures of the labels/tags from inside the bag. They are either both in the main open part sewn into the seam of the lining, or one might be buried deep inside the zipper pocket. One shows where made and the other has a serial number.
  • Authenticators are not required to answer every request and it is their right to ignore a request that is not in the proper format.
  • Please note that comments on price and condition are NOT permitted.
  • Do NOT PM an authenticator or moderator to request authentication. Any and all such requests should be posted in this thread.
  • Should one of your items be questioned in this thread, you are welcome to provide additional pictures or materials supporting its authenticity.
  • Do not handle your disputes with other members in this thread but take your differences to Private Messages. Failure to do so can result in banning.

Thank you so much, Hyacinth! I really appreciate you taking the time to add the context and information for me. Additionally, thank you for giving me peace of mind - I’ll be using this bag as my everyday bag once I wash and condition the leather! I think I fell into the rabbit hole of googling and read information from far too many different websites that may have misinformed me (though I’m sure that wasn’t the intention) of how to help distinguish whether the bag I was interested in and ultimately purchased was the real deal! Again, thank you for educating me and I’m so thankful for this wonderful forum’s help! :)

I'm no expert... but looked at the listing out of curiosity...
the measurements don't make sense to me.
I can't comment on anything else.

Dear Authenticators- please I listed this on eBay and have had a practice of authenticating first but may have missed this one. Another eBay user has emailed it is counterfeit. I only trust you. I think it was a goodwill find.

Ebay user states the font is wrong on the G
The bag is fake.

ETA: Here's a comp showing a creed from a genuine 1994 bag made in the G plant. As far as I can tell, the G plant wasn't even still in operation in 1999 although I have fakes in my records claiming 1999 and 2000 date codes.

Lunch hour find at Savers. The creed stamp is faint and the tag is missing. Serial # reads "No-L9D-9620." Is it authentic?

The placement of the dash after "No-" is concerning. The dash is to the right of the o, not under it

7.5" wide x 8" tall x 1.75" deep (2" including flap)

I believe it's a genuine Compact Pouch made in 1999. There was more than one serial number stamp in use at the D plant between 1999 and 2001.
