  • NOT LISTED ONLINE:
    Item: Briefcase
Where purchased or how obtained: gift from former employer
Comments: Serial number is 733–9347. Google tells me the format of the serial number indicates it was made in between 1940 - 1971. Thanks in advance for taking a look at this item.

Be sure to include the link to the listing in your request.

I assume this is it although hauteluxuryboutique did have a previous listing for the same item:

Although I don't see any obvious problems with what I see in the listing, I'm bothered by a couple of things.

If the creed is as blurry and difficult to read in real life as it is in your picture, that's a problem. It needs to be legible enough to be able to see if it's as it should be. Since there is just 1 other listing of the same bag and it doesn't show the creed, I don't know whether they were all that blurry.

Another question I have concerns the tag. The top left corner is ripped off so it doesn't show the style number although the description under the UPC code appears to be correct for the style.

But another problem is that the color code on your bag's tag is "HA" where it should be "BK" for black. (Does anyone know what HA stands for?)

I don't know why the second 1/2 of the UPC code is different and I don't know whether it should be different. (Usually, the identical item in same color would have the same bar code.)

Bottom line: I would return it based on the illegibility of the creed as well as the color code. I don't think you should have to pay return shipping although whether it's "not as described" or not is unknown.

IN QUESTION: COMP from another listing

Update, I requested a return “not as described” stating your observations. The seller accepted the return, also paying for the return shipping. Thanks again for your help and @Hyacinth also!

First, Google is completely, totally and utterly WRONG about the date based on that serial number. Coach didn't even start making handbags until 1962, and Coach bags didn't have serial or registration numbers of ANY kind until around 1980, give or take a few years either way. PLEASE don't ever depend on Google for that kind of information!

The combination of creed and serial number details indicates the bag was made between 1980 and 1988.Information on how to deconstruct a Coach serial number can be found in the Salearea Coach Guides posted in the thread of the same name. It's best to read the entire thread:

The bag is genuine but can't be identified without measurements and more photos.

Yes, for NAD (not as described), seller is on the hook for return shipping. And refund will also include original shipping so the buyer is made whole.
