Good morning, will someone please authenticate this bag for me:

FOR ITEMS LISTED ONLINE:
Item: Vintage Coach The City Brown Leather Bag
Listing number: I don't know how to find the info
Seller and site where listed: Seller alexis_run and Site posh
Link: https://poshmark.com/listing/Vintage-Coach-The-City-Brown-Leather-Bag-60b9814de97e488eecf2504c
Comments: Since I don't have a listing number, i attached a screenshot of the listing.

Genuine City Bag style number 9790 made in the early 1990s

I would appreciate any assistance in authenticating these two

Remember to include seller ID:
1. Poshmark seller auntietam1 - It seems okay. I can't read the creed too well. (Other opinions are welcome.)
2. Ebay seller new2you77 - fake

ETA:
Seller auntietam1 sold this fake: https://poshmark.com/listing/Vintage-Coach-Legacy-9966-Purse-5f470f867f80d28b2472c371

The first one from AuntieTam1 looks like a style 9620 Compact Pouch, made in the early 1990s. I'm starting to sound like a broken record about the early 1990s...

just so I can kind of learn if it's not too much to ask? In the serial number the 9993 is correct but it's the second and third digit that's wrong? It should be a 6D and not an 8H? D for made in US and6 for made in 1996? And u can tell it's fake by the H (not sure where that's referencing to it being made) and the 8 bc they weren't made in 1998? Or am I completely off base here? I don't mean to ask too much or waste anyone's time I'm just genuinely curious. Thank you!!!
I'll answer very generally because the "rules" aren't rules, which is why you can't depend on most of what you read as being accurate.

1. 9993 is the style number of the bag your fake was trying to copy. The counterfeiters can and do sometimes put "correct" style numbers on their fakes. But a bag that seems to match the correct style it should be doesn't mean it's authentic.
2. Just because most (or all) the current ebay listings show 1996 D plant bags of the style, that doesn't mean that all authentic bags are from that year and plant. in fact, here's an authentic 1996 B plant bag: https://www.etsy.com/listing/871052...993&ref=sr_gallery-1-1&organic_search_click=1
3. With reference to 1996 D plant bags, keep in mind that there are a lot of fakes with 1996 D creeds. There are other elements that have to be correct for a bag to be deemed as authentic.
4. The "8H' is always fake because the H plant wasn't in operation in 1998.

The best option is to ask about any item before buying (or selling) if it's not an item you know well enough to confirm authenticity or not an item that you personally bought directly from a legitimate source/retailer.

Ah yes I found that out too, I called them and they told me they couldn't do it. The number she gave me was pulled from a website claiming to be able to validate vintage bags. I think she google searched and copied the number without actually taking the step to see if it was in service or not, then just told me it was authentic hoping her word would be enough. I wasn't playing that is morning and def called the number, called Coach and used the chat feature with coach too. Hey u can never be too sure lol. The number she used was 904-741-3090 it pulls back to Coach at one point but it's out of service now. Idk. I was very confused this morning but it appears the right choice was made in requesting a refund. Thank you!

The creed is puffy and the spacing is raised but the imprints ARE pressed into the leather (or leather-like material). Sometimes, depending on lighting, there can be the optical illusion that the writing is raised.

ALL J8H- prefix serial numbers are fake. The plant code isn't valid. The seller probably already knows that which is probably why she doesn't have a photo of the creed in the listing and had to be asked for one.

There's a list of frequently-used fake serial numbers Called the Daria48 Fake Coach Numbers List right after the six Salearea Guides Pinned here in the Coach Shopping forum. I strongly advise everyone who hasn't read both the Salearea Guides and the Daria48 Fakes List already to do so, and remember where you found them so you can find them when you need them:

The Daria48 Fakes list includes that prefix, and the Salearea Guides explain WHY a Coach can't be authenticated just by the style numbers and ESPECIALLY NOT over the phone. And anyone who tries to do so including Coach employees are not only violating Coach company policy, but also lying through their teeth if they say they can authenticate anything that way. And the seller is also lying like a rug when she says anyone on a website or phone number can do it without even seeing the bag. Since the seller lied to you about the out-of-service phone number that she claims she called just that morning, the chances of her lying about everything else gets a lot stronger.

I've been authenticating here and at a very large selling site for 15 years and I had to see an actual photo of the serial number to be sure, although as I said, ANY bag with a serial number starting with J8H- is ALWAYS going to be fake. NO EXCEPTIONS.

I strongly advise not buying from that Facebook seller.

That one is genuine, it's called a Legacy Small Zip.

Please understand that we don't encourage buying from people who have sold fakes, it just encourages some of them to keep doing it if they know they can get away with it. The ones who mix real and fake are even more dangerous than the ones who sell nothing BUT fakes.
