Hi there! Can anyone please confirm authenticity of this bag? The creed inside is J8H 9993. I believe it's a shopper from the 90s? Photos are from a sellers listing. I do not have the bag in hand to do measurements. Thank you!!

We always need to see an actual PHOTO of the creed and serial number, and also the URL of the seller's listing. Please read the instructions for authentication requests at the top of each page.

But since it's late, I'll save you the trouble. If that's the actual serial number inside the bag, it's fake.

Item: vintage Coach City Bag
Listing number: 048-9790
Seller and site where listed: sliptie (seller), Poshmark (site)

Comments: Hi, I looked at this bag's creed, and although it looks like it has characteristics of a New York made bag, the smaller text under the paragraph seems to read "Made in the United States", so I'm a bit confused on what I should think. Thank you!

I'm not sure why a bag made in New York could not say that it was made in the United States.

You might want to read the six Salearea Coach Guides posted here especially the ones on creeds and serial numbers, the actual Guides start at Post 14 so ignore any links in posts 1 thru 13:

It's genuine.

Hello,

Could someone look at this vintage ergo bag for me? I am falling in love with this style.

Mercari seller AiHeartShop

Genuine Ergo Compartment Bucket from 1998

Dear Authenticators,
Is this red Coach brief the real deal? Thanks so much for your assessment before I commit to it.

seller:station_85

Genuine, but you might want to read the seller's Neutrals and negatives posted at Ebay, and do a Search here at tPF for the seller's name.

Hi Authenticators,

Please confirm if the following bag is authentic

Item:Vtg Coach Legacy Berkeley Shoulder Bag Brown Suede Leather Brass Hardware EUC
Listing number:284305895878
Seller and site where listed lulu283 eBay
Link:https://www.ebay.com/itm/284305895878?hash=item4231f3b1c6:g:l1cAAOSw06Fgq~Vk
Comments:

Genuine, from 1997. And it's actually not quite "Style 9011 (the reverse design of Janice’s Legacy— Style 9950)" as the seller claims, nor is it from the Berkeley line since the style number 4951 is stamped VERY clearly on the creed patch which makes it a Legacy Zip Nubuc from the Sonoma line. And that and the construction details make it the Nubuc version of the Legacy Zip.

As we've said many times, never expect sellers to know the actual name, date or history of the item they're selling. Or in this case, even the style number.

@Hyacinth advised against depending on a seller to know the correct style name, age or history.

My warning is to beware that although a seller may have a genuine item, it doesn't mean that all her items are authentic.

lulu283 is a mixer.

This listing (at $117!) from lulu283 is fake:

After being corrected by a knowledgeable poshmark poster, the seller corrected the listing and explained that she got "1951" from a google guide. After reading that the prefix (sometimes) contains code for the year of manufacture, I'm guessing that she saw "51" in the serial prefix and took it to mean that the bag was made in 1951.

I wonder which guide told her this was authentic:

Since Coach never made that creed stamp, that turnlock, that style,or that strap and those clips with any similar vintage bag, I'm leaning toward either Korean-made fake or POS. There's nothing right about it at all. Poshmark's "authenticators" are in rare form lately.

Or are they still only "authenticating" items above a certain dollar amount? Selling fakes is apparently perfectly OK as long as they're sold cheap.

So that would make it a POS.

LOL! I did know it was a POS! I was being sarcastic since she claimed to read "guides" to learn the age of the bag that originally had been questioned.

Did you see her reply to you?

emmascloset1611 @hyacinth_b I’m sorry? What are you saying? This is a genuine coach bag. Not sure why you’re spending your time inspecting my whole page. You can move on, thank you.

Ah, yes, I love the reaction. No problem, Posh isn't my kind of neighborhood anyway. Too many fakes and people happily making money with them by ripping other people off and not giving a damn.

Hi! I bought a blue satchel type bag on Shopgoodwill.com. Then in doing my (belated) research, I read here that the item number on the bag, J8H-9929 is fake! I didn't spend a lot, but it's the principle of the thing. I don't want to be carrying around a fake bag, or gifting a fake bag...and no way can I sell a fake bag. I wrote to their customer service--the store selling the bag-- to notify them and they had already shipped the thing to me. I'll share pics when I get the bag. By the way, after reading here I'm getting good at identifying fake Coach bags. I've seen several for sale at local thrift stores. Is it good form to go tell the shop people that the bag(s) on display are fake? So cheap looking, thin leather, really poor uneven stitching, and signature fabric with c's wearing through with color underneath.Fake Coach.jpg

I never bother telling the shop people their items are fake anymore. Most of the time they either don't believe you or don't care. Often they believe it is legal to sell fakes.

Insist that Goodwill give you a refund. If they want it back, they should pay the return shipping. They have a no fakes policy.

I read and bookmarked the Salearea Coach Guides for potential future use. I probably overthought about the Creed's time period because the serial number format made me assume that it was from the initial New York factories, but the subtext did not say "Made in New York City". Thank you again!

My apologies for getting the formatting incorrect. Here is the link and a photo of the creed. It's a shame that it's fake. The seller insists on its authenticity:(
