Are Rolexes really worth the money?

It's def worth the money. My parents made me choose from a debutant ball or a rolex when i was 18... i chose the rolex, and i still have my lil piece of beauty. It's a lifetime warantee, and even when i accidently chipped the face on a motorcycle accident on my brother's bike, rolex was nice enough to fix it. The only thing bad about it is that every month, i notice that it's about 2-3 minutes behind.

I'm thinking of getting a Rolex for my bf when he grads from college next year. Can you ladies tell me how much I should be expecting to spend on a Rolex so I can start saving. I mean the average price of a decent Rolex? And what are the best dept store to buy the watch? Thx. :flowers:
I purchased a Sub-Mariner for my husband as a x-mas present it was a lil over 5k with taxes.

Acegirl I think I have the same blue as you....it was called Midnight Blue.....Rolex, the one and only!! I have my sportier stainless steel one for daily wear and my 2 tone jubilee blue diamond one for dressier events.

Cool! Love that blue  I need to check my paperwork & see what it says (if anything..) Here is a pic I took with better lighting. The color is weird to photograph.

When I think of Rolex, the first thing I think of is "cheap." Rolex is just any other watch out there with the Rolex name. I don't feel its a classic, that its timeless or that there is any value to the Rolex name.

Watches = Stick with Cartier & Piaget.

well you are entitelt to your opinion but the facts are

-rolex has a constant design line they just modify very slightly their existing models to keep up with innovation (materialwise closure etc)andimprove the existing design
-rolex is in fact the brand that introduced water resistant watches (hence the name oyster)
-rolex made mechanical watches "mass marked"
-rolex is one of the few watchfrands that can call themselfes manufacturers as they do produce all the parts themselfes
-it is timeless as they stickto their designs so a watch form 1982 is still (modified) in their programm theiy rule is constantcy
-rolex is infact one of the valuabelst watchbrands out there
-the daytona steel model is like a birkin sold on the greymarked with premium barely no other watch has that since years and years
-theyhold their value really good (not even patek with their regular models /not complications is able to perform that way)

Man, is my husband gonna be pissed when he finds out he could have picked up my Rolex at the Dollar General Store...

I just cannot for the life of me imagine spending that much on a watch. I sell my watches for pennies ($35 to $100) in comparison ... granted they are not Rolex, which I respect as a brand for sure. But I get to change my designs daily if I want and match every outfit. I've worn the same one though for ... oh ... five months now. Pietersite rectangles that go with everything.

Anyway, I totally admire the Rolex name and value. I just haven't seen one that would take my breath away enough to shell out that kind of money. That same money would buy us a new fence for our yard! LOL :)

What she said. :D

When my husband first started making money, he bought a Rolex.
That was 5 years ago.
The thing NEVER tells the right time LOL.
NEVER.
It's always 10 minutes too slow or 5 minutes too fast. I assume because it's self winding?

Anyway-5 years after the fact, Rolex still makes that model (so it is timeless) and he can resell it for not much less than what he paid (so it is expensive, but definately a coveted item that holds it's value)

He still loves that watch and to me the style is absolutely one that will never go out (Sub-Mariner)

I do think that when you buy Rolex, there is certainly some monetary value put into that little crown logo, in the same way that women spend $$$ for designer brands.

To some people that's completely worth it. And to others it's not so you would have to decide what category you fall into.

That being said, when I think "watche" I would put more value in a company that specializes only in watches, like Rolex, Breitling...then one that manufactures watches in addition to everything else-jewelery, leather goods, perfume etc.-the way Cartier does.

Well to each his own. I guess I'm just one of those people who WILL spend that kind of money on a nice watch one I decide it is worth it. Even though this IS my first time buying a watch that cost this much (mainly out of fear of attracting muggers). I see nothing wrong with it and with all due respect I don't think its fair to make comments of that nature on a board where people talk about shelling out big bucks for purses, jewelry, shoes, and the like.

The feature I love most about Rolex is the sapphire crystal. I can't tell you how many watches I have owned where the crystal looks scratched and ruined in 3 years of wearing it. I have run my Rolex into enough doorframes while trying to juggle shopping bags to know it take a LOT to scratch their crystals. After 5 or 6 years of daily wearing, neither of mine has a scratch! ;)

It's sad but true that mechanical watches actually don't keep time as well as cheaper Timex, etc... watches. The standard is usually about +/- 8 seconds per day (I think that is Rolex's minimum standard). I recently had mine serviced by an authorized Rolex service center, though, and they have it adjusted where I believe I am within +/- 2 seconds a day, which is really outstanding.

I have read about placing it in a certain position at night to adjust its speed. I always place mine face down in my jewelry box, but I have read somewhere that one position speeds it up and another will slow it.

Here's one of my watches, which I consider my "every day" Rolex. (I can't get a good pic of the other):

Omg... Caannie, I LOVE your Rolex!!!:nuts::nuts::nuts:
