Anyone stepping away from handbags?

Not stepping away, exactly, but I’m running out of space. I have self-imposed (well, they are pretty practically grounded) limits on how many bags, clothes, luggage, I can have, they all need to fit in my small closet. I also want to wear my bags a lot. I have a goal to wear my regular (not occasion) bags at least 30 days a year each so … that’s only 12 bags and I’m nearly there. There’s still more types and brands I want to try, but I also don’t want to sell a bunch, so … what to do?!

I've been a member of this site since I was a teenager (now early 30's), and was recently feeling the same way, OP. Maybe we are just getting old lol 😛

It's not just bags that I've lost interest in, personally -- it's luxury goods in general.

A lot of luxury brands these days are no longer worth the money imo. For example, the only thing I buy from Louis Vuitton anymore is their perfume. I've stepped away from most luxury brands tbh. Prices keep going up, quality keeps going down (and, well, the quality of many products wasn't even that great 10-20 years ago). I literally bought a pair of Marc Jacobs heels last year -- only to have one of the heel tips fall off after wearing them for 1 or 2 hours inside a home center. I was wondering while walking why I suddenly felt "off" and was considering visiting my husband's chiropractor. 🤪 In fact, the past 5+ pairs of shoes I bought from Marc Jacobs fell apart within a couple months of normal wear. It's a shame, as their shoes are very comfortable...

The only luxury brands I still trust these days are Shiseido and Longchamp. Frankly, I'm a lot more invested in pets now. A much better return on investment. I've had a cat for 10 years now, and she's brought me a lot more joy than all my luxury goods combined. Husband and I are planning on adding a larger exotic pet to the family when available, and it's a lot more exciting to think about than shopping. 😀

Totally now need to know what type of pet.

Not stepping away, but I’m trying to downsize my collection a bit, have given away non-luxury bags to some relatives and selling off a few of the bags I no longer reach for as much…. If I’m considering adding smth to my collection it should have a clear purpose/fit into my lifestyle, otherwise it will be just sitting on the shelf… I still love bags and admire a lot of them from a far 😃

Similarly , definitely not stepping away, I still love bags, but a year or 2 ago, I gifted a lot of my bags, sold a few, I only have left the ones I really love, and only buy bags which I’m going to use.

I won’t stop buying bags, but only ones which I’m going to use a lot(having said that I do use a croc bag everyday).

The last time I bought a handbag was December of last year, so it’s almost a year ago. And I have no desire to buy anymore new bags. If anything, I really want to sell my Chanel Boy bag because I rarely use it.

Luxury items in general, yesterday, I placed an order for a pair of Roger Vivier flats. My black ones were extremely worn and I got rid of them a long time ago, just never got to replace them until recently because I happened to see them on sale. If they weren’t on sale, I wouldn’t have bought them.

I still buy bags but have stepped away a bit from the luxury segment as I don't get a lot of happiness from it as I used to (now in my late 30s) and all the "games" are stressing me out! I have sold a lot in recent years and the ones I have left I really love and (try to) use a lot. :P

while it is not that i have stepped away from collecting bags, because just last week, i bought a bag, and total of 4 since August, unbranded everything, but honestly, i have no use of handbags in my current lifestyle, i found i am trying to fill some empty spaces with my handbags, maybe i need to think about that

I know posting this in the Handbags forum is very ironic, but is there anyone else stepping away from luxury and handbags in general? After my second downsizing, I'm happy with the bags I kept. There's nothing else I need or want to buy. I'm waiting to see Phoebe Philo's new collection, but besides that, all the new releases aren't interesting to me at all. A friend recently offered to bring me a vintage or secondhand bag from Japan, and I couldn't think of anything to get.

Then there's financial reasons. I want to save more money and spend my money wisely but I also want to spend less time thinking about shopping and handbags. But I've also just gotten bored and moved on from endless consumption and mindless shopping. I've seen some people on Youtube talk I even explore more majority doing the same things, but I'm wondering if anyone on TPF is?
Actual Boat, but I've shifted my focus to more important aspects of life and appreciate this change.

I’m not stepping away from my collection at all but I do wonder / worry what the continued increase in mirror fakes will mean for handbag value and desireability.

I know I’m becoming far less likely to buy resale. Whereas 90% of my bags used to be purchased resale, in the last 12 months I’ve skewed towards buying new from store.

I'm not stepping back at all, but the only "luxury" bags I have are Chloe, and one Bal. I'm still collecting contemporary bags from the 2000s because I love them and they are so affordable.
It does seem to have become popular to step away from luxury lately since the quality isn't always there and people are concerned with over consumption. I enjoy my over consumption of bags too much.

I didn’t decide to step away but it has happened as part of a huge downsizing. I’ve sold about 30 handbags and as many slg’s. The Chanel sold for what I paid or a little more but I took a serious hit on some Fendi, Celine and Dior. Some were brand new.

It made me realise I don’t need so much stuff, I’m using 3 black bags - The Row Margaux 10, The Row every day bag and a Fendi mini selleria peekaboo - on rotation and it’s enough. For summer I have a dove grey mini peekaboo, a chalky pink SDJ, a cute little Fendi shopper bag in blue and my grey Celine classic.

I kept my Celine micro luggage in black for sentimental reasons but don’t use it. I also kept my Dior Diorever in tapioca as the quality is phenomenal and a Dior Diorama woc just in case. Oh and I couldn’t bring myself to sell my YSL college bag despite trying a few times and not wanting to.

I feel I have enough and what I have is brilliant quality and something for every outfit.

Prices are simply silly and it would have to be something really special to make me buy anything now.

I stepped away not by choice but by realisation.

I haven’t purchased a new handbag in about a year. I sold about 20 luxury bags, and kept about 20. That’s more than enough for me. I use them, but I don’t really care about buying any anymore. I don’t pay too close attention to the luxury markets anymore.
