Anyone stepping away from handbags?

Can o' worms information circulating all around the internet if you know where to do your own research on the subject, but a lot of information is out there at the moment about just where luxury items, including the materials that premier handbags come from, and where they are actually made except for the handles and labels..... you know, conspiracy stuff that is found at 3am when you can't get to sleep..... which made me glad that I stick to bags now that aren't bought for the name.

I don’t buy any of my bags for the name but I do buy premier designer bags for the quality and for specific styles.

I don’t think any of this is conspiracy. It’s factual that most brands only do finishing in certain countries - not 100% of the manufacturing.

That all being said, I’m actively reining in my bag purchasing in part because I believe resale value is going to plummet as more people buy mirrors fakes and / or get disenchanted with the whole of luxury bag buying. So anything I purchase now would have to be something I’m willing to keep permanently.

Also, I’m growing tired of the chase. I’ve amassed a lovely collection of 42 bags. How many more can I justify owning given I like to use my bags regularly?

Lastly, I’ve gotten into original art as of late and would rather purchase a new piece than a bag.

I was going to London today to buy a new bag. Got up early washed hair, straightened hair, got dressed. decided which bag I was taking. Got in my car and was driving to the station, when I suddenly thought, actually i don't want a new bag and I don't want to go to London. So i came back home and did some sewing instead.

Sewing is always a good idea!

I learned about this years ago after reading a few fashion books. Definitely a lot to think about! I would recommend Dana Thomas' books "Deluxe: How Luxury Lost its Luster" and "Fashionopolis: The Price of Fast Fashion and the Future of Clothes."

It’s everything- the economy. I work from home mostly so when I go into office is with my backpack on 😂
The prices are insane and at the same time how much more can I get…it’s like that want want want need. It’s a problem that’s for sure.
Having said so I do really like bags. I just recently bought a Strathberry one (never tried as we don’t have a stand alone store here) but when I was out and about I saw this lady with the Osette bucket bag and it just looked so darn good!!! I don’t know how I remembered but knew it had to be a contemporary one. Lo and behold I bought it and I’m smitten with it.
No more no more bags. I’ve got more than enough 😩

Same! I want to use cheap backpacks and tote bags, not fancy ones. I can only carry a laptop or anything heavy with a backpack.

Has anyone else noticed it seems like everyone online is selling their bags? So many youtubers have talked about selling off their handbags and not spending money on luxury designer goods anymore. Any thoughts?
We talk about it quite a bit in the influencers and hermes thread, but I think the general consensus is that a lot of influencers are just doing it for clicks and views because hating on luxury is so popular right now due to the economic downturn. Personally I think many influencers never had a passion for bags to begin with and just jumped on the bandwagon for youtube fame, and now that it is no longer trendy they are moving onto the next big thing

I can believe it. I can also believe there's a lot more fake bags than you would assume. Don't hate the players hate the game right? xD

There's also the possibility that influencers know it's distasteful to show off so much wealth when people are struggling so they act like they are over luxury to seem more relatable right? When I'm sure there are some influencers who genuinely have loads of money.

This is not bag content but I remember seeing one small youtuber who made a few videos about a no buy/low buy and then kept showing the things she bought. The thing that made me stop watching was when she showed her Tiffany branded coffee cups. I'm sure she didn't mean anything by it and I don't think she's a bad person, but that just felt like such a stupid decision.

Totally, I agree! Don't want to go off topic but I do think a lot of folks in the real world are also taking a break because of the amount of inventory on the resale market. Resellers are also offering lower than even rates for some pretty desirable bags! I am still shopping but very thoughtfully considering the practicality of what bags I plan to add, only because I am not done with my bag collection quite yet. I think if I felt my collection was 'complete' I would be taking a step back too.

I try to always buy secondhand first because it's better for the environment and if you wait you can get great deals. Most of my Polene bags are secondhand. When I looked for deals I always aimed for 300-400 dollar range because when I first bought Polene bags that's the price they were at before.

This tracks... But I also think that the luxury brands have lost the plot a bit and everyone is starting to notice that the quality keeps going down while they keep raising the prices higher and higher. Even wealthy people don't want to feel like they got scammed. Somethings gotta give.

I remember reading "How Luxury Lost its Luster" years ago. I think the author's angle was that luxury is not exclusive enough and it has lost its luster because too many people could afford it. The author would probably be happy with the current state of the luxury market in that it not as easily accessible to most people as it used to be.
