Anyone else feel somewhat embarrassed about LV?

I know how you feel. I recently moved to a small town where I was self conscious about wearing my designer hand bags and kept them in my house for months after the move here. Then I realized that I am hiding who I am and I brought them out.. Now I wear them every chance that I can. I am too old to allow people's judgments to control what I do. I succumbed to that in my teens and 20s. Now in my ripe old age of 60, I just let it fly and don't allow people's own self-esteem issues to bother me. It's their issue, not mine. I can't help but think of all of the strange collections that people have in their lives; collections of things that really make you give your head a shake. I like my collection of handbags. Others can keep their collections of odds and ends, and I will keep my handbags. And by the way, there are two consignment shops in this little town that sells fake designer bag with no shame at all - so why should I feel shame wearing the real thing. I mean no offense to anyone in this writing.

I feel the opposite. I've been a member on tpf a while and I have dipped my toes in some other forums but I have found the LV forum to be the friendliest and most helpful. I'm so familiar with many of the member names and feel so comfortable posting on this forum.
I'm happy that someone has had positive experiences on this sub forum. I haven't - I wanted to be a part of this conversation but apparently some people cannot speak to others politely. I have also been a member on here for a while and it's always the same thing.

I'm sorry about yout experiences, but I think saying it might be hell here is a little bit ot a stretch. It's just a forum about handbags and SLGs, after all.
There were some very unpolite comments in this thread, but that's pretty much what happens when people discuss touchy subjects anywhere. Life goes on. Most of the time, people on this subforum are quite friendly. At least that's my experience. When this is not the case and something upsets me, I take a break from the forum and I come back after a while.

In any type of forum, be it on-line or in public, people are going to express their thoughts and/or opinions. That’s what a forum is for.

However, I agree that people should put some though into what they want to say before uploading a comment in a effort to be considerate and courteous to others. And I agree with the advice of “If you don’t have anything nice to say.....”. On the other hand, I think some folks can be too sensitive and see “rude/nasty” where there isn’t any or maybe they just read the response wrong and got upset over nothing. (Who hasn’t misread a communication and gotten angry, then reread the same content later and realized there was no reason to get upset???) We also need to be taking into account the different communication styles people have. For example, someone who “tells it like it is” isn’t being mean, that’s how they communicate.

People aren’t always going to agree on likes, dislikes/points of view, etc... which is something I appreciate about tpf. Different tastes and perspectives are what makes the world go round. I think getting to a place where “someone disagrees with me and I’m okay with that” is somewhere we all should strive to be.

IDK why anyone would be 'embarrassed' to carry an LV. I have gotten nothing but compliments whenever I carry my bags - and it doesn't matter which brand it is! Heck, I've had a nurse rave about my five year old pink Coach purse at the doctor's office just recently. As for my LV's I've been stopped at malls and supermarkets and the ladies have always been gracious and kind. No snark at all.

As for 'appropriateness' - it is all about how you style and conduct yourself. I've seen 'how to carry your Kelly casually' on Hermes forum and the pictures are so helpful because you can clearly see that even luxury bags can look simple and understated if you have the right attitude and wear everyday clothing with it.

If you care too much about status and associate your bags with it - then naturally, you run into the risk of thinking you are far better than others, or not good enough. If you believe that carrying a large brightly colored shopping bag (constitutes as bragging) is a legit problem, then I congratulate you for having an uncomplicated life.

Wear your bags daily and wear them happily. No point in worrying about what other people think. Your bag is meant to be used and to carry stuff! Just my 2c. Peace :)

I am always amazed when people talk about LV as too high end to wear in some places, whereas, when I see a monogram LV handbag or small daily carry item, my instinctual reaction is "working man/woman's bag". I have always felt this way about most of the LV luggage line. It all looks like 1940s rugged luggage to me. I like the look, because for me to works with my enjoyment for the steampunk look, but still, it is industrial to me and not high-end polished. And this is why I love my monogram LVs - because it doesn't shout out. Strange huh? Something old or timeless in today's world that works, but with a reflection of a 1940s look, and I like that.

This is exactly how I feel about LV canvas bags! I have bags from other brands like Hermes, Chanel and BV, but I use my LV monogram or damier bags when I want to be more low-key. LV canvas to me looks like it is meant to be used, and when I see someone using one it just looks to me like he or she uses the bag for its functionality and durability. Perhaps that’s because I live in an affluent city where Hermes and Chanel are much more noticed that the ubiquitous LV prints, and an LV canvas bag looks much more under the radar.

And I agree with your statement about the 1940s look! Timeless and classic while functional.

I think it really depends on where one lives. In a big city, LV is often viewed as “workman’s bag”. No one gives a hoot unless you are carrying a limited edition item. However, I can see that if one lives in a small town, carrying LV may come off as showing off. But in either case, you shouldn’t worry too much how other people perceive you. Life is too short. You should just do you. Anything that other people said about you reflects more on him/her than you. That’s the truth!

I don't carry LV bag to work but I wear my LV watch instead. Not many people notice my watch. Only one colleague commented that I have expensive stuff and pointed to my watch and jewelry.

Okay, I love LV and I love steampunk aesthetics (if I understood it correctly, industrial meets Victorian meets Goth meets experimental). But never thought how to mix and match these two elements. If it works, it can be genius! But HOW does one go about it? Anyone game to open a LV & Steampunk thread, post examples, mod shots, etc? I´d join in a snap. Please forgive the OT, I just could not resist.

I live in a city where not a lot of people have LV's, Hermes, etc. It's mostly Coach and MK's. They see LV's as too high end and over luxurious. I buy LV not because of it's status but for the taste and fashion. On top of that, LV and Gucci has lots of men items that suit my taste! I use my LV Men's tote bag as a school bag since it does fit a laptop and several notebooks! I use coach and MK bags at work though rather than LV's (I work at a hospital). I usually get kind compliments on my LV bag whenever I'm at school or at a store although I often get asked why I bought a woman's bag!!:annoyed: :amazed: I'm still new to the LV world although my mom buys a bag or 2 for herself when it's her birthday so I'm a bit familiar with the brand I think!:amuse:.

I've only had one bad incident 5-6 days ago where a lady at a Mexican Restaurant claimed that my LV bag was fake. This ain't a joke at all.. She literally made a scene I guess to try to impress people?? She was like "the checker pattern are off" blah blah blah. I showed her my purchase history from the Louis Vuitton website and she got embarrassed/destroyed.:cool: Rolled my eyes after :nuts:She asked for it! :amazed:

I'm in the UK we have this amazing science fiction/history series called 'Dr Who' A time traveller from the victorian era , his attire is remmenicent of that period . Especailly when Peter Capaldi played the 12th Doctor, Top hat, waist coat, pocket watch, long black fitted coat. His time machine or refered to as a tardis is a compact telephone/police public booth from the victorian era. His tardis is special in that it's small on the outside but huge inside defies logic with space and dimension. He experiments with time travel and battles his recurring nemesis that threatens the human race. But the theme and costume is distinctively victorian but with science and travel very steam punk. LV luggage would definately not look out of place.
