Any books about Hermes?

Hi! Couldn’t help but notice this thread and wanted to chime in [emoji3]. There’s this one that I bought a while back thinking it would have interesting information, at least about silks, but I don’t recommend it. JMHO.

I also have La Beaute En Voyage and agree with others here that it has interesting information, but not a whole lot of what it sounds like you’re looking for. My copy is in French and I am illiterate in French, so it’s possible that I’m missing some critical information contained in this book due to language barrier.

I also found this book sitting on my shelf next to the others:

This one has a lot of photos of various H handbags and very little text. It’s interesting in that you really get to see close ups of the different skins, but again, no history.

I seem to recall reading about H history in a book about 10 or so years ago. I’m pretty sure it was a book and not a website or blog, but I can’t remember the title of the book at this particular moment. I’ll definitely think on it and hopefully, it’ll come to mind.

Oh, if you like looking at pretty pictures of interesting and mostly exotic H bags, Heritage Auction’s luxury accessories catalog always has a good assortment. (I think you can get their catalog for free.). The one I have here is an old catalog from 2013, but they put out a new one every time they have a luxury accessories auction.

Oh, ok, now I remember! It’s not an H book. Many books covering the general topic of handbag or scarf history will devote a section or two specifically about Hermes. The book I was thinking of is probably one of my favorite books because there is historical information about every designer referenced.
IMG_2541.jpgIMG_2542.jpgIMG_2543.jpg

The pictures are fantastic and the book even includes original advertisements from when a particular bag first came out. Anyway, I like this book because the text makes for interesting reading and the photos are visually stimulating.

Oh, and the historical information about other designers is fascinating as well because you can read about how they were influenced by Hermes (or how Hermes was influenced by them). I found this section on Ludwig Lederer to be interesting:

IMG_2544.jpg

Lederer did “Kelly style” bags in the 1960s which I think is before the H Kelly bag was officially coined the Kelly. Anyway, look at the details of the Lederer bags — look familiar?

This is where I learned that Hermes was first to secure a patent on the zipper! It was called “one of the most radical inventions in the history of fashion”.

Thanks for the helpful info! I also got it and love it! Unfortunately, two corners of the Le Grand Prix du Faubourg ripped after only a few uses. I didn't think I was rough with it though. Oh well.

Im surprised no one has mentioned the new book on the Hermes window designer Leila, its not as large format as the earlier book but was published around an exhibition about her window designs earlier this year and is on amazon for about £25
It called
Leïla Menchari: The Queen of Enchantment

Enjoy x

Thank you for sharing. I purchased the set from Steidl in Germany. Fast shipping and great packaging.
BTW, I also read bringing home the Birkin and Deluxe. Enjoyed all of them!

I have the La Maison books, the photography inside is most excellent. A couple years ago I visited a fashion museum in Antwerp where they had the 'Margiela The Hermes years Exhibition' we weren't allowed to take pictures but I sneaked lots and then bought the book with the same name. Very interesting and great photos inside too!

Oh no that’s too bad! :frown: Will be extra careful next time I open mine.

I noticed a book at Amazon called Fierce and Fragile: Big Cats in the Art of Robert Dallet by Alan Rabinowitz. It probably gives some wonderful insight into his work for Hermes.

Don’t have this one yet, but they also sell it in the H boutiques and online.
