babaruby, i just turn up here and saw your posts... Thank you for sharing..It is quite difficult to get responses because there are very few people who are into peranakan things probably due to the fact that anything peranakan is not so common these days.

i have a nonya mother-in-law so i cant escape the nonya culture especially gooooooooooood nonya cuisine..My interest in nonya things just came naturally when i was young and so i collected a few things along the way....not that easy in this part of the world cos there is very limited peranakan influence among the chinese here. Things will get more expensive with prices of gold hitting all time high everyday...

I hope we are able to share more pictures...(got to look for the bead belt i bought years ago and dont know where i kept them..) to keep our interest going

how come no reply from anyone yet??? dont' know if i am doing the right stuff - trial and error to see if anyone noticed me:p

Are you based in US? Do you think kebaya will be popular in US. There is a peranakan association in Austalia where my sister have just joined the group.

Yes, I'm in the U.S. (Los Angeles). I don't know if the kebaya will become popular here. I don't think folks even know what a kebaya is. Here in L.A., things are very trendy and fast moving. So, if someone finds out about them, then they'll be made popular by a starlet wearing one and then it will be popular for a hot minute before everyone moves on to something else. That's just the way things move here in L.A.

As for my kebaya, I look at it as an art form. And it cost me a fortune to have that art form custom made in Singapore. But, I'll always have it. So, it's not a fashion fad/trend for me. I'm not Paranakan or even Asian, but I have lots of different clothing from other cultures as I value the artistic work that has gone into the making of such clothing items.

Hi Spapeter

I totally forgot to open up this Forum since i last wrote to you.;
I can share the picture cos i do not know how to take pictures and download into the computer. I do have an ipad and see if my daughter could help me with that.

I had a lovely intan earring and was stolen cos i left it in the car boot and was broken into. the irony was that i bought a 'buah kana' ring, wore it but lost the intan earring! Managed to get back my south sea pearls with sheer determination because i went straight up to the big boss of police who is a chinese datuk. Of course my south sea pearls was more expensive.

Now have to shop for earring next trip home. Saw a nice intan bangle and cost about 6k. now with gold price up wonder if can get same price.
i am a malaccan so know all the 'lobang' and go to the tiny goldsmith shops in town.

Hi Intan

Thanks for accepting me as a peranakan friend. We have quite good collection passed down from my granny and mum. Are you from Melaka?

Hi bagolicious

Wow great! you are not even peranakan or Asian...and can appreciate kebaya. I gave a dear friend one black kebaya and she is residing in Ohio. told her she could just wear over a top...elegant and stylish.
I even got her one traditional chinese wedding 'kua' (for tea ceremony), stunning red and heavily beaded with sequins of a phoenix. She is just cool.....

Yes, I can very much appreciate the kebaya and also Indonesian, tulis, batik sarongs.

I even have the hardback book, Kebaya, on my coffee table in my living room. It's one of my favorite books. When I'm in Singapore, on vacation, I love going to the Peranakan boutiques over in Katong. I also love Peranakan food.

Hi in tan

So tired having ironed 9 pieces of mum's kebaya. Sometime back a relative wanted to borrow mum's kebaya and passed the whole lot. She must have tried on and I did not wash so the sweat must have caused some kind of stain on a few pieces so washed all of them today. Its a shame I can't fit in. Will put to good use later on

I love buah keluak which is only found in Indonesia. It's our speciality and acquired taste.. Surprisingly my kids love it but many are turn off by the look of it! Hahaha

Hi intan

It's ok. Take your time to reply. I dont spend much time on the Internet either.

As for the photos will learn to take and download. My priority is to familiarize myself with the iPad which I got it for my birthday from my dear son

Hi, I was walking down Chinatown and came across this shop at South Bridge Road (opposite Fook Hai Building) a traditional Chinese Gold Shop. The big words 'Peranakan Collections' placed at the showcase window catch my eyes. I was surprised by a wide selections of Peranakan Jewellery display at the showcase as well as in the shop.
I did check on the price of the Intan Pendant and the price was reasonable
