Yes, Coach used plastic (actually nylon) zippers in many bags starting in the late 1980s. They still do.

Check the "Authenticity Guide Facts & Myths" guide in the set of six Salearea Coach Guides.

"THE NO PLASTIC ZIPPERS RULE
Nonsense! Plastic zippers were used in many bags from at least as early as the 80s and 90s. Most were used on the inside pockets especially in the Lightweights line, but the early 1990s Sheridans and probably Dakotas used them on the outside too. There were plenty of cases where Coach wanted to either reduce the weight of the hardware or color-match the zipper to the leather or lining colors. And modern Coaches still use plenty of plastic zippers..."

Thank you Hyacinth. I thought I'd printed all the recommended guides, but I don't remember this one. I appreciate your help!

J8H- and J9H- SERIAL NUMBER PREFIXES

We're starting to see a LOT of proveable fakes with these serial number prefixes. Daria48's List at Ebay has mentioned "J**-" prefixes before but these combinations are especially popular with fakes makers. Please have ANY Coaches authenticated that have either of these prefixes.

And just a reminder - ANY Coach that has a J8P- prefix and a Made in the US creed is FAKE.

I'm sorry!! I could have sworn I read that somewhere.

You can take about 95 percent of the so-called "Authenticity proofs" that you've found on the internet and throw them in the garbage, because they're usually wrong. Read the Signature at the bottom of all my posts.

If you want accurate information, start here:

And please don't believe anything else you read about authenticity "rules" unless you verify it here at tPF. You may also want to look at some Coaches on Ebay auctions - almost every single leather bag made by Coach before they moved production to China says in the creed stamp that it's made of glove-tanned cowhide. A lot of the nonsense in those useless authenticity guides can be exposed by looking at actual Coach products.

Actually I thought I had read it here as I usually don't read authenticity guides much but like I said I could have misread something.

I asked here so I could find out and be sure. Just because I didn't know doesn't mean I'm an idiot.

No one said OR implied that you were. But not only are most "guides" totally unreliable, but so is human memory. Don't ever trust it when it comes to anything important. Sometimes some simple research can answer that kind of doubt really fast.

I'm sorry if you thought my response to your question implied that I thought you were an idiot. I didn't mean that at all! If I sounded exasperated, it was because I get tired of the ton of misinformation that is floating around. It definitely wasn't directed at you personally. Don't be afraid to ask about anything you aren't sure of.

When did Coach start adding hangtags, please? I have few older bags that don't have them and I don't want to ask Coach for replacement tags if they're not supposed to have them.
Coach bags have almost always had hangtags. The original hangtag from the 50s was shaped like a baseball. I have bags from the 60s and 70s that came with a rectangular hangtag. They don't make hangtags like that anymore but they can always give you something that will coordinate with your bag. Usually if you call Coach, they will send you a metal tag to match your hardware. If you want one to match the leather color, you will probably have to ask at a store if they have something that matches. They usually have quite a collection that have fallen off of bags.

Thanks Whateve. Sadly we don't have many Coach stores in Australia and none in my state. I have had one replacement tag from Coach and have asked for two others but they didn't arrive, maybe they thought I was being greedy!
