Psych drugs are different than most meds. They tend to alter your chemistry in an attempt to replace something that's missing. Many other meds like insulin that are necessary for sustaining life in some people replace the missing component without the side effects. Psych drugs are not natural and they are more powerful. They're designed to change how you behave, to dull or enhance senses. I've known people who were on different ones for most of their life; moving from one to the next as they hit the market in an attempt to get results without the side effects. Some had worse effects than others without working as well towards their goal.

Some people would just rather let the condition exist and cope with it than face the side effects.

In most cases, those conditions can have a debilitating effect on your daily life without putting you at risk of doing harm, so many don't feel the need to medicate.

That's the thing Echoes...it needs to be addressed with meds sometimes because the mentally ill person can't see how bad their illness is and that sometimes they pose a danger not only to themselves but others too.

I'm not pro psych med...the opposite. But when a condition is diagnosed and behaviours are out of control..it can sometimes be the only course of action left.

It takes time sometimes to find the right drug that's a fit for your biochemistry.

I think all of you are bringing up really valid points. I feel like every case is unique and there is no one solution. As we can see from this discussion there is so much more to mental illness than meets the eye whether it's depression or schizophrenia. I wish Amanda and her family the best. They are in a really tough position.

I agree with all of you... I've never known anyone with any form of mental illness, nor ever had anything myself, but I'm wishing for a world that treated depression, therapy and the use of antidepressants the same you would a broken leg. No stigma.

Can you voluntarily stay under a conservatorship or does the court need proof that the person is incapable of handling their own matters. Like with Britney looking from the outside she looks like she doing better but it's been over 5yrs now. If she were mentally well she can still have her dad and whoever handle things for her in some form without some conservatorship.

To keep an LPS conservatorship going, a doctor needs to sign off on grave disability. It's not hard to do. A conserved person can certainly agree to be conserved by not contesting the conservatorship. Every person who is on an involuntary hold, including a conservatorship, has the right to contest it. To contest a new conservatorship, the proposed conservatee actually has the right to a trial by judge or jury. I think for renewals the right is to a court trial but I can't recall for sure. This is in CA by the way. Not sure about other states.

Amanda Bynes Too Ill For Release Doctors Get Extension

10/28/2014 8:25 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

EXCLUSIVE

Amanda Bynes is in such bad shape ... her doctors secretly got an order from a judge that allows them to hold her for another month ... TMZ has learned.

We've learned Amanda's doctors asked a judge Monday for a 30-day extension to her involuntary commitment. She's been in a psychiatric facility for the last 17 days, and if an extension wasn't granted she would have walked out the front door yesterday.

But Amanda's shrinks made a convincing case ... she is "very ill" and in no shape to care for herself. The judge agreed to the extension.

What's unclear ... whether Amanda's parents will go back to court to regain a conservatorship over her. Initially we were told they would seek another conservatorship, but our sources say they've had a change of heart. Amanda feels betrayed by them for having her committed, so controlling her would be a Herculean effort.

The likely scenario is that the psychiatric hold will be extended for a long time.

Amanda Bynes Parents Get Conservatorship She Bought Cartier for Strangers

10/29/2014 1:00 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

EXCLUSIVE

Amanda Bynes' parents quietly went to court and got a conservatorship ... after telling the judge their daughter has spent "alarming amounts" of money by purchasing jewelry for strangers.

Amanda's folks filed legal docs -- obtained by TMZ -- in which they say Amanda is a "substantial risk" to herself and others. They cite her erratic behavior, including her DUI arrest last month, her shoplifting and her bizarre and sometimes violent conduct in NYC.

The documents also reveal Amanda is blowing through a shocking amount of her savings. Her parents say her net worth is currently $5,747,703.36. Of that, $2.8 mil is real property -- homes. Her parents say Amanda's only income is from her rental property -- $144,768 last year.

Amanda's parents say the gift purchases have been "extensive." It sounds like she's going into stores, buying stuff and just handing it out on the street.

The conservatorship takes a back seat to Amanda's involuntary commitment. TMZ broke the story ... her doctors just got a 30-day extension which allows them to hold her in a Pasadena psychiatric facility.

Amanda Bynes's Mom Is Her Conservator Again

Amanda Bynes's mother has regained conservatorship of her as she remains in a psychiatric facility.

A California court gave Lynn Bynes control over the troubled star – and her estate valued at more than $5 million – Oct. 22, according to legal documents obtained by PEOPLE.

Bynes, 28, who was under an emergency conservatorship last year, began spiraling out of control again Sept. 28, when she was arrested for DUI in California.

The papers list her recent string of bizarre behavior in New York (reportedly attempting to shoplift, allegedly scratching a woman inside a nightclub and being kicked out of the John F. Kennedy International Airport) and exorbitant spending as evidence that she "poses a substantial risk to herself, to others, and to property."

Bynes "has been spending large amounts of her savings," the petition states. "It has been reported that she has recently made extensive purchases as gifts from jewelry stores, such as Cartier, for strangers."

The filing also cites the former child actress's repeated claims that doctors implanted a microchip inside her brain.

On Monday, a judge extended her involuntary commitment to a Los Angeles treatment facility by 30 days.

Bynes's mother was first granted legal control over her daughter in August 2013 after she set fire to a driveway. Bynes seemed to be starting fresh with her family's help, taking college classes and deleting controversial Tweets, until last month's arrest.

Say a prayer, she was just released. :nogood:

Amanda Bynes has been released from the psychiatric facility where she’s been held for more than 2 weeks and was roaming the Sunset Strip Thursday night … TMZ has learned.

Sources familiar with Amanda’s treatment tell TMZ … she went before a hearing officer at the psychiatric facility Thursday, asking to be released. Amanda has been on her meds and sounds lucid, even though doctor’s say she is seriously mentally ill.

The hearing officer felt Amanda was stable enough so she could NOT be held involuntarily, so he ended the 30-day hold that had been granted last week and Amanda walked out the front door.

Amanda walked down Sunset Blvd., searching for a place to stay. She then went to a diner where she ordered a ton of food which she devoured — fried chicken, salmon, caesar salad with guacamole, and a house salad with Italian and ranch. She was chit-chatting with the waiter and said she was shy because she had a procedure on her face which required a bandage.

She was alone in the diner and was talking to herself. We’re told Amanda has been looking for a hotel room but she had been turned down at several places.

What was the point of making anyone her conservator if they are just going to open the door and turn her loose anyway? It's pretty obvious she's mad at her parents and isn't going to listen to what they say, even if they manage to track her down.
